"When did I begin working with him?" Andrew repeated, chewing on the words. "Uh, I don’t know if I should tell you that." He said slowly. He received several confused looks from the Becketts and he winced. Even Amir’s grandparents had a hard ti with that response.
"Why? Is there a problem with how you two started getting to know each other?" Well, not in the grand sche of things, but Andrew knew from Maxwell’s words, and their actions, that they were quite protective of Maxwell. If they found out that he had been having problems with a few alphas stalking him and staking out his house, they might lose their minds.
"Uh, well, I don’t think Maxwell would like it if I said it." Andrew knew it was a bit of a cop out, but what was he supposed to do? He didn’t have a problem with what he’d done, but Maxwell had told him more than once that he didn’t get along with his family. Even if all evidence pointed to the contrary.
They just...were very protective of him.
Mr. Beckett and Mrs. Beckett stared at Andrew intently. It felt as if they were trying to bore a hole through him. Andrew squird. He was stubborn. He could play this ga, even if he felt awkward about it.
"Co on Andy. We won’t get upset Even if you made Maxwell the side oga." Ben called from his side of the room and Andrew frowned.
"I never would do sothing so horrendous to anyone, let alone Max. I’ve never intentionally led anyone on in my life." Andrew declared and Will chuckled.
"Well, at least you said intentionally." It was the first ti he’d really spoken the whole ti since Andrew had arrived. Andrew was actually surprised he’d spoken at all. He’d had such a sour look on his face the whole ti. Andrew, not one to take sothing like this lying down, blinked.
"Do you an that, or are you upset because your fiancé didn’t want to hang out with you?" Silence filled the room. Everyone seed shocked by Andrew’s words, but Andrew watched as Will turned several colours before he roughly got to his feet and with a huff, left the room. Andrew only regretted once he’d left. He was hoping that the man was going to throw a few word jabs at him, but instead, he didn’t.
That probably ant that Andrew had hit the nail on the head. Oops. He’d only ant to bother him, not actually hurt him.
"I...shouldn’t have said that." Andrew muttered, and Ben’s laughter filled the air.
"No. I’m glad you did. We can only tell him so many tis to treat Rue better. He needs to get so pushback from outsiders. Especially you, apparently. When he heard that you were dating Max it was like a bomb went off. I had no idea that he viewed you as such a rival in university, but he apparently did." Amir’s grandparents seed interested in Ben’s words.
"You went to university with Will? Does that an you are a dical doctor too?" The grandfather asked, and Andrew flinched.
"Uh, no. I-" Mrs. Beckett cut him off.
"Andy ended up dropping out of that course and going to Cambridge for a different field of study. He’s still a Doctor, just not in dical science. We’re trying to convince him to go back to school since the company he used to work for has no idea who they fucking ssed with." Andrew was not only surprised that she was defending him, and preventing him from speaking, but that she’d also swore. In front of Amir’s grandparents, no less.
"Oh my. If you’re cursing them out, they must have done sothing truly awful. How much longer are they going to be around?" Amir’s grandmother asked, clearly curious. Mr. Beckett adjusted his sweater.
"Not as long as they think, I’d imagine. We have to be careful, since they are in competition with Max’s company in so regards, and a few of our other fields of interest but Max and I have been working hard. No one has clean hands, but I am surprised by how dirty theirs are." Mr. Beckett said, and the hand holding Andrew’s tightened.
"What did they do to you for them to inspire this kind of reaction from this couple? Both of you rarely react like this." He was partially asking the Beckett’s, while also speaking to Andrew. Andrew laughed nervously.
"You don’t want to know." Ben called. "I’m serious. You don’t. Otherwise, we’ll all be taking down this company and everyone involved, and that will look too suspicious. Wait till we’re onto the next phase and then Andy can tell you his sob story. You’re going to be angry." Mr. Beckett seed surprised.
"You know what happened, Ben?" He asked, and Mrs. Beckett gave them a strange look.
"Are you about to imply that I do not know the whole story while I’m sitting beside you?" Mrs. Beckett’s tone was dangerous. It was clear that in his excitent to find out what his son knew, he had forgotten about his wife. Andrew winced. That wasn’t going to be pretty.
"Oh, uh, no?" Mr. Beckett was wilting fast under the intense gaze of his wife. Andrew could relate. After all, she was where Max got his blue eyes. Andrew had to look away, otherwise he’d be convinced to spill the beans too.
"Never mind them. Did sothing terrible happen to you, Andy?" Amir’s grandfather asked, and Andrew felt his heart jerk in his chest and the genuine sense of concern coming from them. It wasn’t still like how the Beckett’s behaved, but warm, welcoming, and wrapped around him like a blanket.
It was almost exactly like how Kim and Jenny were.
Andrew dropped his gaze, staring at his hand on his pant leg, and the other wrapped in skin only a few shades deeper than his own. He gave the hand a squeeze.
"Well, it already feels like forever ago if I’m honest, but I’ve started to get mad about it." He admitted. "I wasn’t at first. I think it was because...I wasn’t truly aware about what had happened to . I didn’t acknowledge it. But after...after I began to manifest in earnest, and my teeth fell out? I felt...I felt so much anger inside." Andrew admitted. He chuckled. "I know Max has been angry since the beginning. I thought he just was a good guy about it, but I think I get it now. What they did was wrong. Now that I am an alpha like they accused of, even after doing tests every year to check, I’m so angry at their level of favouritism and discrimination."
"They accused you of being an alpha?" The grandfather asked.
"Your teeth fell out?" Amir’s grandmother was appalled. Andrew smiled, showing off the new, longer and sharper teeth.
"I’m fine now. The new ones ca in just fine. Apparently, it’s a true alpha thing." Andrew shrugged. "And yeah, they did. They wouldn’t even listen to . Turns out, my ex probably had sothing to do with it. She was smuggling information or sothing out of the company. Either because she wanted to, or she wanted to fra . She wanted to make sure I disappeared from the field." Andrew didn’t want to go into why she wanted him to disappear, only that it was her goal.
"That fucking bitch." Andrew flinched at the words leaving Amir’s grandmother’s mouth. He did not expect him to swear. "Who did she have a connection to? What is her na?" Andrew knew better than to give it out to them. He had no idea what kind of business they ran for them to rub shoulders so easily with the Beckett’s. And to know who his father is just by looking at him.
Thankfully, he had an out.
"Max said I’m not allowed to say her na ever again, so I’m sorry, but I can’t." Ben’s laughter was in direct contrast to Amir’s grandmother’s shocked expression.
"He told you that you couldn’t say her na anymore? What is he? Five? I just want to know out of...the kindness of my heart." He protested, trying to convince Andrew. Andrew shook his head, still laughing.
"Oh no. I’ve learned my lesson already, and Max was right. I shouldn’t say her na anymore. Not now, at least. I don’t think it’s anyone too powerful, since she lied to our whole relationship." Andrew’s smile flickered on his face and he closed his eyes. "Gosh. I can’t believe I was such a fool." He chuckled.
"You are not. You were in a serious, committed relationship. Why would you doubt them?" Mr. Beckett tried to stand up for Andrew, but Andrew shook his head.
"Don’t try to defend , Mr. Beckett. She hid from everyone we worked with for two years. She never introduced to her family. She didn’t even know where I lived. She’d never been over." Andrew laughed. "I think I just wanted soone to be there, you know? I’d gone through grieving my Mom in a way that she would have frowned upon, and I was finally settling down. I wanted...no, I think I needed sothing stable. She was the first person to confess to since I’d co to terms with those thoughts. It was...just a convenience on my part. I think I was more upset about the betrayal of trust than I was about the loss of my partner."
"Wow. She truly was not a good woman." Amir’s grandfather said and he sighed.
"No. But she is smart, I’ll give her that. Just...also evil. A rather dangerous combination." Mrs. Beckett was staring at Andrew with growing concern.
"Evil? You’re calling her evil? What on earth did this woman do to you? To others? Tom?" She turned, clearly demanding the truth. Mr. Beckett groaned, closing his eyes.
"I’ll send you the files after. But, not today. Today is supposed to be a happy day, and I think Andy would be very upset if he played any part in making it not that. Am I right?" Andrew nodded when Mr. Beckett glanced at him. "So, we’ll discuss Andy’s evil ex later. For now, she is out of his life, and Max is dating Andy. And Max, even if unwillingly, introduced you to us fairly quickly, and he knows where you live." Andrew’s chest ward at the reminder.
"He does. And, apparently, he wanted others to know that too." That quickly, the mood in the room shifted as Andrew told them what he’d discovered in his apartnt when he’d gone to visit it. Before his teeth had fallen out and he spiraled.
In fact, they had a wonderful chat until it was ti for Amir to co back, finish getting ready, and he needed to leave with Maxwell so that he could get ready as well. It had been a wonderful ti, even if he had spoken about so of the darker monts of his life.
They had genuinely listened to him. They hadn’t made fun of him, and had cared about his feelings. And thoughts. Andrew...really liked Maxwell’s family. And Amir’s. It was unlike what he had experienced with his own family. Not that his Mom was a bad Mom, she wasn’t, but there had only been one of her.
And unfortunately, her last few years had coloured how he rembered her. He tried his best, but being ill for so long before one’s death truly made it hard to rember what they were like before then. Especially on your own.
So this? This had been nice.
It had also been a good warm up for the rest of the day. He had no doubt he was going to have to answer a lot of questions at the wedding reception and after party. It was nice to know that he was going to have a few people who he could go to if he needed a break.
