The cold, sharp voice cut through the air.
Ivy froze.
Slowly, she rose up to her full height and turned towards where her husband voice ca from.
Her eyes widened in disbelief as Adrian was already seated inside the helicopter.
Beside him sat Maya, one hand protectively wrapped around her stomach, and Old Lady Blackwood, who avoided Ivy’s gaze completely.
For a mont, Ivy couldn’t even process what she was seeing.
“H... huh?” she stamred, her voice barely above a whisper.
Then reality hit.
“What are you doing, Adrian?!” Ivy demanded, her voice cracking as she stumbled to her feet. Her entire body trembled violently. “Are you serious right now? You can’t be serious!”
The soldier who hasn’t realized that Adrian had stepped in, moved closer to the helicopter, his expression firm and unyielding.
“We’re not taking the children,” he said curtly, his tone leaving no room for argunt.
“They’re infected!”
Adrian’s voice exploded from inside the helicopter, loud and forceful.
The words struck Ivy like thunder all while she staggered back.
“What?!”
“Do you want everyone on that helicopter to get infected?!” Adrian continued, his face twisted with feigned urgency
Pure, bone-deep shock coursed through Ivy’s veins.
For a mont, she couldn’t breathe.
He was actually lying about his own children.
A bitter, hollow laugh almost escaped her throat.
Even a beast wouldn’t do this...
“At least a lion wouldn’t devour its own cubs...” she murmured under her breath, her voice trembling with disbelief and pain.
But Adrian?
He would.
Just to save himself.
“My children are not infected!” Ivy cried out, her voice rising as tears stread uncontrollably down her face. She turned desperately to the soldier. “Sir, please....look at them! If they were infected, would they be this calm? Would they still be standing like this?!”
The soldier hesitated.
Then, with a frown, he pulled out a temperature scanner.
Without wasting ti, he checked Adrian, Maya, and Old Lady Blackwood.
Then he moved to the children.
The device beeped.
His expression changed instantly.
“What...?” he muttered, his brows furrowing deeply. “This isn’t a normal body temperature.”
Ivy’s heart dropped.
“They just have a fever!” she said quickly, stepping forward in panic. “They’re children....they get sick easily! There are no dicines anymore... I’ve only been managing it the best I can.”
Her voice broke as she continued pleading.
“Please... I’m not asking you to take . Just take them. Please... just my children.”
“I told you,” Adrian’s cold voice rang out again from behind, devoid of any guilt, “they’re monsters. Stop wasting ti, officer. Let’s go.”
GROWL!!!
A thunderous roar echoed through the area, shaking the very ground beneath their feet.
Everyone froze.
“The monsters are here!”
Panic erupted instantly among the remaining survivors.
The sound of heavy footsteps and feral growls grew closer....fast.
Ivy’s heart pounded wildly in her chest.
“Please!” she scread, her voice cracking as she pushed her daughters forward. “Take them! If....if they’re infected, you can throw them out later! They’re just children... they won’t harm anyone!”
But the soldier was no longer listening.
Survival instincts had taken over.
Without another word, he jumped back into the helicopter.
The doors slamd shut.
The blades roared louder.
“No....WAIT!!” Ivy scread, running forward desperately.
But it was too late as the helicopter lifted into the air and left.
Ivy stood there, frozen, her daughters clinging tightly to her as tears stread endlessly down their faces.
The world around them collapsed into screams, roars, and destruction.
But sohow, Ivy forced herself to move as she grabbed her children and ran.
Eventually...they were rescued by a group of survivors.
A real group who were strong and capable.
They saved her as well as her children, welcod them into their base.
*****
Thinking about everything that had happened, a bitter smile ford on Ivy’s lips as well as tears which rolled down her cheeks.
“What a fool I was...” she muttered under her breath.
Because she eventually throw the group kindness away just for Adrian.
As fate would have it, Adrian had also survived.
Soone on the helicopter had been infected, biting others and infecting them but Adrian, Maya and old madam Blackwood were lucky.
The soldier had no choice but to abandon everyone mid-journey.
That was how Adrian made it out alive.
And when he found Ivy again, he apologized and like a fool...she believed him.
Since Arian refused to fight, gather food or contribute in other ways....he was ridiculed, looked down upon.
And eventually he left the base that accommodated Ivy and her children as well as his other family back to their forr house in the apocalypse where he believes to be the boss.
