Chapter 33: Shuanghui Ham Sausage

“But first, they were poor, lacking gold.

Second, Wang Xin didn’t believe in pie falling from the sky.

Who would trade scraps for food?

He feared that it was a deliberate setup, aiming to harvest Superpower Users. After all, Superpower Users also had Crystal Cores in their brains, even purer than those of Zombies.

A few years ago, a rumor had spread about an injured Mutant Beast, heavily wounded and large enough that it could feed people for half a month. It lured wave after wave of Superpower Users hoping to scavenge.

It turned out to be a trap deliberately set up to harvest the lives of those seeking easy pickings.

...

At the ti, aside from the Superpower Users who wanted to scavenge, so physically strong ordinary people also tried their luck, and all ended up killed together.

Ordinary people didn’t have Crystal Cores, but they had bodies.

The apocalypse drove people mad, and cannibalism beca commonplace.

Sun Base strictly prohibited cannibalism, but it couldn’t stop people from extre hunger and starting to go insane.

So, when the news ca, although Wang Xin was very tempted, he restrained himself.

It wasn’t until he saw people gradually coming out of the supermarket with food and unhard

that Wang Xin made up his mind to give it a try.

Mostly because they were really starving.

They hadn’t found any wild vegetables for days, and they had run out of all food. These days, they could only desperately drink water, fooling themselves into feeling full.

But how can people survive on water alone.

They had no gold originally, but Wang Xin had a good mory, recalling an old man who set up a stall to exchange gold for food. But he accidentally blocked the path of a Superpower User with a violent temper, who then overturned the entire stall. The gold jewelry scattered all over the ground.

The old man, out of fear, hurriedly picked up the large pieces and left.

The smaller pieces were carelessly left behind.

At that ti, gold was worthless, and nobody wanted to trade food for it.

Even the pieces that fell to the ground were left unclaid.

The area was dusty; after so many years, Wang Xin thought so small pieces of gold jewelry might have been buried under the dirt.

He took a few companions and, after sneaking around and digging for a long ti, found only a pair of golden earrings.

Wang Xin and his companions were regretful, but even finding one was not easy.

Wang Xin and the others ca together but didn’t enter together; aside from him and Ah Qian, the rest waited outside the supermarket.

During the exchange, Wang Xin was worried that the earrings were too small to be worth much. Fortunately, although small, they traded for 15 yuan, which Wang Xin used to buy instant noodles.

Six packs, enough for the nine of them to share.

They would just add more water to it, and surely they would be full.

The two hid the instant noodles inside their clothes, holding them tightly.

It wasn’t until they were at the checkout that they brought them out, and right after paying, they concealed them in their clothes again.

After they had hidden their noodles, they were just about to run out when soone called out to stop them.

Wang Xin almost instantly positioned himself in front of Ah Qian, hands protectively clutching the noodles in his arms, and watched Su Yinhe warily.

Su Yinhe touched her nose, looking at the two emaciated children in front of her, and suddenly felt a surge of compassion.

“Do you want so sausage?”

“What?” Wang Xin stared at her tightly, ready to run with Ah Qian at the first sign of trouble.

If they weren’t good at anything else, they were fast runners.

“Do you want so sausage? It’s not nutritious for children to only eat instant noodles.” Although, sausages didn’t offer much nutrition either.

Su Yinhe took out a few 50-gram Double Happiness sausages and gestured for them to co and take them.

Wang Xin listened to Su Yinhe’s words and glanced at the sausages but still didn’t dare to approach. There couldn’t be soone this kind-hearted.

“Go on, take them. I’m the owner of this supermarket; I don’t lack for that bit of instant noodles,” Su Yinhe said, looking at the tightly guarded noodles in their hands.

She still couldn’t quite master the capitalist tricks of Zhou Bapi; occasionally, a bit of kindness peeked through.

Such small children in her era should be in middle school, worrying about howork every day.

But here, such small children bustled about every day for food.

Wang Xin hesitated briefly, if the boss was willing to exchange instant noodles for junk, he probably wouldn’t steal.

And…

If he could take that sausage back…

Wang Xin decided to take a gamble.

“What do you want us to do?” Wang Xin firmly believed there was no such thing as a free lunch.

“Um… you’re so young… alright then, help tidy up the shelves tomorrow.” The supermarket had opened in a hurry and the products on the shelves had been sorted once, but they were still sowhat disorganized.

The supermarket would automatically refresh the products, but it didn’t organize them.

“Okay.” Wang Xin didn’t expect it to be that simple, and in a flash, he felt a twinge of suspicion.

“Take it.”

Wang Xin stepped forward, reached out, and quickly took the five sausages on top.

The five 50-gram sausages felt heavy in his hand. Even for soone as composed as Wang Xin, a hint of joy appeared on his face.

Ah Qian was even more so; had he not rembered Wang Xin’s words, he would have cheered.

Seeing their happiness, Su Yinhe also smiled.

Ah Qian left with so reluctance.

“Brother Wang Xin, that sister is so pretty and kind.” And she gave them sausages, a big one at that, just for so shelf tidying.

“Gou Dan and the others will surely be happy too.”

“Yeah, stop talking. Be careful.” Wang Xin was happy too, but he knew now was not the ti to rejoice.

They needed to regroup with the people outside first.

Wang Xin’s companions had been closely watching the supermarket and quickly approached when they saw Wang Xin and Ah Qian co out.

“Let’s take a longer way round.” Seeing them, Wang Xin also breathed a sigh of relief and found a sheltered spot to divide the instant noodles and sausages.

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

If one person carried everything and they were robbed, they would lose it all. But if each person carried a bit and soone was robbed, the others could split and run, saving most of the food.

“So much!” They exclaid.

They hadn’t expected to trade for so much, thinking that a little earring could at most get a pack of instant noodles, or more likely nothing at all since others traded with gold bricks.

They hadn’t expected to trade for six packs of instant noodles and five sausages.

“Let’s go back,” said Wang Xin, more composed than the rest.

These kids all listened to Wang Xin; they knew he was the smartest among them, and it was his intelligence that had kept them from starving many tis.

They did not take the sa route back as they had co; it was too busy, as everyone going to the supermarket used it, and the risk was too great.

They’d rather take a longer, safer route than risk getting robbed. They did not want to starve to death.

Sneaking and hiding, they finally returned to their dilapidated house.

As soon as they arrived, the companions who had been weaving straw sandals in the house gathered around.

“Did you trade for sothing? What did you get?”

As the returnees pulled out the instant noodles and sausages, exclamations of surprise kept ringing out.

“Instant noodles?”

“Sausages?”

“Such big sausages!”

Once everything was taken out, soone looked at Wang Xin in admiration: “So much stuff. Boss, you’re amazing.” To trade an earring for so much.
