Chapter 426: Chapter 424: The Sentry Tower

Song Haitao succinctly explained to Hu Yiyang the situation after the AS zone was ejected and also recounted the battle between Jiang Yan, Ye Qing, and the Mutated Snow Wolves.

However, he didn’t ntion a single word about Jiang Yan possessing the Storage Divine Artifact, her expedition to Yunding Tower, or the discovery of the Musen Base conducting human livestock and Mutant People experints.

By the end of the story, even the usually calm and composed Hu Yiyang couldn’t help but let out repeated exclamations, “So, the AS zone is still stuck on the Nanpan River now?”

“Yes, most likely it’s probably covered in ice and snow.” Song Haitao finished, sighed, and said, “The entire structure is built with special tallic materials and is worth a fortune. Once the extre cold weather passes and the snow begins to lt, we’ll still need to find a way to retrieve it and bring it back to the Yaoben Base.”

Hu Yiyang nodded, “Understood.”

On another side, Lin Xiaohui swiftly finished bandaging the two injured warriors.

“Doctor, I’m done,” she signaled that they no longer had to wait for her and could move out.

“Alright.” As Hu Yiyang prepared to get into the vehicle, he noticed Mo Shiyao standing by quietly. “Miss Mo, please get in the car.”

Mo Shiyao’s eyes reddened slightly, “Hu Yiyang, I need to ask you sothing privately.”

“Alright.” Hu Yiyang approached her. “Is it about Leader Mo?”

Mo Shiyao responded, “Yes.”

“Still no news.” Hu Yiyang replied, then tried to console her, “But Miss Mo, you understand— for warriors like us, who are ready to sacrifice our lives for the country and its people at any mont, no news is the best Good News.”

Mo Jingsheng was the leader of the base. He was also her brother.

And he was a warrior.

“Then Qin—” She hesitated because her relationship with Qin Zepeng was not public knowledge and she couldn’t ask directly.

Hu Yiyang misunderstood and thought she was curious as to why he had been dispatched, so he explained:

“Vice Leader Qin is doing well, but with so many matters at the base recently, he’s been quite overwheld. That’s why he couldn’t personally lead this mission.”

“That’s not what I ant.” Mo Shiyao took a deep breath and let it go, “Forget it, let’s get in the car and talk once we’re back at the base.”

“Alright.”

The convoy began heading back.

Jiang Yan gazed at the vast, endless white snowfield outside and felt a sudden wave of complex emotions.

They were finally returning to the base.

This period had felt like living through a surreal and fantastical dream.

It held both peril and warmth.

Song Qian, watching the warrior driver skillfully maneuver the steering wheel, couldn’t help but ask in puzzlent, “If the Compass is malfunctioning, how are you navigating?”

Sun Jingtao added, “And also, Zhang Ruijie fired the signal flare; how were you able to spot it?”

“Let explain everything step by step,” Hu Yiyang said with a smile, pointing toward the distance with his hand.

“Can you see anything out there?”

Everyone followed the direction he pointed toward and looked out. “There’s nothing there though, is there?”

“Why not use the telescope to check?”

“Good idea.”

Jiang Yan also pulled out her telescope and carefully looked into the distance. At the edge of the snowy field, what appeared to be an inconspicuous yet distinct bulge of ice and snow appeared in her view.

A warrior chid in to elaborate, “Recently, since the snowstorms have lessened, Yaoben Base started deploying people within a 50-kiloter radius to construct many watchtowers in a radial pattern.”

Jiang Yan knew this. The reason these watchtowers were only constructed recently was because any earlier attempt would have been futile. Not to ntion teor strikes, a single blizzard could easily bury them all.

Now, however, the outdoor temperatures had dropped to levels that most people could adapt to if suitably dressed.

“These watchtowers serve to monitor the external environnt and also function as navigation markers. While we can easily locate iconic sites like Dongshan Observatory, finding our way back to the base isn’t as straightforward.”

Everyone ca to a realization.

“As for the signal flare—” One of the warriors glanced over at Hu Yiyang. “Captain Hu, can you explain? I need to stay focused on driving.”

“Sure thing.” Hu Yiyang smiled and succinctly explained.

The group listened, finding the account sowhat mind-boggling.

It turned out that after the extre cold weather struck, Yaoben Base prioritized preparations to search for the AS zone and Song Haitao’s team.

They had originally planned to set out in the near future when, to their surprise, just last night, a watchtower near Dongshan Observatory spotted a signal flare and imdiately relayed the ssage to the base’s network of watchtowers.

Though Qin Zepeng couldn’t confirm whether it was Song Haitao’s group, he was confident that soone was there— and not ordinary individuals either.

After all, ordinary people couldn’t possibly launch a signal flare.

Furthermore, Dongshan Observatory, along with the Seed Bank hidden beneath it, was considered of extre importance.

This prompted them to dispatch Hu Yiyang’s squad for the mission.

As it was their first mission outside since the extre cold set in, the squad had been heavily ard.

What they hadn’t expected was that upon arriving at the foot of the mountain late at night, ready to rest before ascending at dawn, they encountered another strange team at first light.

Jiang Yan raised an eyebrow, “A strange team?”

Hu Yiyang confird, “Yes. It was a large group— part warriors, part ordinary people, and another part composed of grotesquely oversized individuals.”

Jiang Yan imdiately thought of the scenes at Yunding Tower. “Those would be the Mutant People injected with hormones and viruses.”

“The warriors and ordinary people led in the front, while the Mutants trailed behind at so distance.”

Initially, Hu Yiyang’s team thought they might be mbers of an allied base and refrained from opening fire.

But later, when an ordinary person stumbled and fell into a snow crevasse, only to be rescued and imdiately torn apart and devoured by the Mutants in front of everyone, they realized they were not dealing with a legitimate force.

Or rather, not from a Righteous base.

A fight broke out, naturally.

Being the ambushers with heavy weaponry and the advantage of concealnt, the squad quickly annihilated the enemy, who were caught completely off guard.

Song Qian remarked, “So you didn’t leave anyone alive?”

“At the ti, we captured a few alive, but before we could interrogate them, they chose to end their own lives.” Hu Yiyang’s face grew a shade heavier as he continued, “But from their clothing and gear, I could tell they were from Musen Base.”

“Musen Base has its own totem. That totem is the musk ox.”

Although Yaoben Base didn’t have any musk oxen, they had heard of them.

Sun Jingtao glanced out the car window. They had long since left the mountainside and were now speeding across the snowfield. “Did we not take the sa route back? I don’t see those corpses.”

It hadn’t snowed today.

If there were any corpses on the road, they would definitely have encountered them— unless they had taken a different route.

Hu Yiyang explained, “I had the team clean up the scene.”

Though it hadn’t snowed, the surrounding area had plenty of loose snow, enough to bury so corpses.

The warrior driving the vehicle chid in, “So, does this count as the mantis stalking the cicada, only to be caught by the oriole?”

“It does. But then again, I’d say we were just lucky,” Song Haitao concluded with a kindly smile.
