Haruka stared at the phoenix hovering above Kenji’s shoulder, her jaw slowly dropping as she processed what she was seeing. Shreya flared her crimson wings dramatically, her fiery eyes sparkling with pride, as if daring anyone to challenge her magnificence.

"You an to tell ..." Haruka began, her voice trembling with a dangerous edge, "that you’ve had a phoenix—A PHOENIX—by your side this entire ti and didn’t think to ntion it?!"

Kenji winced and raised a hand defensively. "Uh, well, technically, she wasn’t visible most of the ti, and, you know, I had a lot on my plate—"

"’Had a lot on your plate’?!" Haruka shrieked, pacing in wild circles as her elegant deanor slipped into pure indignation. "Master, this is not so trivial detail you ’forget’ to ntion! A PHOENIX is—ugh!" She threw her paws in the air, mumbling incomprehensibly while occasionally shooting glares at Kenji.

Shreya, perched smugly on Kenji’s shoulder, tilted her head. "Shreya thinks Haruka is overreacting. Clearly, Kenji has more important things to focus on than my brilliance—though it *is* unfortunate that my magnificence wasn’t celebrated sooner." She preened her fiery feathers for emphasis.

Before Haruka could respond, the children burst into laughter, their eyes gleaming with mischief. "Catch the phoenix!" Leia cried, and the three of them imdiately lunged toward Shreya, their arms flailing as they tried to grab her.

Shreya squawked indignantly and flapped into the air, narrowly avoiding Leo’s outstretched hands. "What are you doing?! This is harassnt! Shreya is not a plaything!"

"Fly faster!" Pheia shouted, giggling as she scrambled after the phoenix.

Kenji watched the chaos unfold with a mixture of amusent and exhaustion. "Kids, maybe don’t tornt the magical fla bird?" he suggested weakly, though he made no move to stop them.

Haruka huffed, crossing her arms. "Serves her right."

Eventually, after much giggling and near collisions, the children gave up the chase, collapsing into a heap on the grass. Shreya returned to Kenji’s shoulder, ruffled and muttering complaints about "undignified treatnt," while Haruka finally stopped pacing and muttering long enough to regain her composure.

---

The group resud their journey back to town, the golden morning light filtering through the trees as Shreya finally decided to share sothing important.

"Kenji," she began, her tone unusually serious, "we need to talk about the contract sacrifice."

Kenji frowned, his gut telling him this wouldn’t be good news. "I’m listening."

Shreya flared her wings slightly, as if preparing for emphasis. "When you took the heart of your contracted beast and absorbed its energy, you unlocked incredible power—ten tis the strength of the beast itself. But this process also awakened your inner darkness. It’s a fragnt of your true personality that was buried deep inside, and now it’s... awake."

Kenji raised an eyebrow. "My inner darkness? Are we talking scary villain stuff or brooding anti-hero vibes?"

Shreya sighed dramatically. "Don’t joke, Kenji. It’s serious. The contract sacrifice also affects your humanity. Every ti you use it, you lose 5% of what makes you *you*. Piece by piece, you’ll beco colder, less empathetic. One day, you might even see your contracted beasts as slaves instead of allies."

The weight of Shreya’s words settled heavily over the group. Even the children, who had been giggling monts ago, now stared at Kenji with wide, apprehensive eyes.

"Master... you have to promise ," Haruka interjected, her voice quieter now but filled with genuine concern. "Promise you’ll never use that ritual again."

Kenji hesitated, his mind racing. While he understood the risks, the promise felt heavy—a weight he wasn’t sure he could carry. But seeing the genuine concern in Haruka’s eyes, he sighed and gave a small nod. "Alright, Haruka. I promise... for now."

---

By the ti they reached the town gates, the vibrant energy of the marketplace greeted them. Stalls bursting with colorful wares lined the cobblestone streets. Vendors called out to passersby, hawking enchanted trinkets, exotic spices, and freshly baked bread.

"Daddy, look!" Leia pointed excitedly at a stall selling glowing trinkets shaped like stars.

Kenji chuckled. "Maybe later, sweetie. Let’s finish our guild business first."

As they stepped into the Adventurers Guild, Kenji imdiately noticed the absence of the usual scowling receptionist. In her place stood a bright-eyed young man, his cheerful deanor a stark contrast to her sharp, no-nonsense attitude.

"Welco! How can I help you today?" he greeted with a smile.

Kenji approached the counter warily. "What happened to the old receptionist?"

The young man’s smile faltered slightly. "Oh, her? Let’s just say she was let go for... unethical practices."

Kenji tilted his head. "Unethical how?"

"She, uh, only catered to attractive adventurers and sent the rest on... questionable quests," the receptionist explained, lowering his voice. "Apparently, so of those quests led to dangerous traps. You’re lucky if she ever sent you on one."

Kenji’s eyes widened as the mory of his battle with Argoth surfaced. "Wait a minute... Are you telling that dungeon wasn’t legit?!"

"Well, the dungeon was real," the man admitted, "but it wasn’t a D-rank. It was actually a weak B-rank dungeon."

Kenji’s fists clenched. "If I ever see her again, she’s going to regret it."

Haruka placed a paw on his arm, her calm presence steadying him. "Master, focus. Plot revenge later."

Grumbling, Kenji retrieved the dungeon crystal and placed it on the counter. Just as the receptionist reached for it, Shreya spoke up.

"Kenji, wait. Do you even understand what you’re holding?"

Kenji frowned, glancing at the glowing crystal. "What do you an?"

"That crystal contains raw dungeon energy," Shreya explained, her tone hushed but intense. "If you absorb one, it won’t make you stronger. But if you collect a hundred from the sa dungeon type, you can create your own pocket dungeon. Imagine—an entire dungeon full of loyal monsters, all under your command!"

Kenji stared at the crystal, his grip tightening. The idea of having his own dungeon was tempting—dangerously so. He pictured the potential strength it could give him, the options it could open.

"Kenji." Haruka’s voice brought him back to reality, her pink eyes watching him carefully.

The receptionist gave a polite cough, snapping Kenji’s attention back. With a reluctant sigh, he handed over the crystal, telling himself, *Well, I guess I could get another one. Let check the quest board for any new quests.*

---

The quest board was a flurry of notices and papers pinned haphazardly. Kenji scanned the various missions, his eyes landing briefly on one that caught his attention:

**Eliminate the Crimson Veil Cultists Terrorizing the Northern Villages**

Kenji frowned, his eyes lingering on the words longer than he intended. Sothing about the na "Crimson Veil" sent a shiver through him, but he couldn’t quite place why. "Crimson Veil...?" he murmured to himself.

The children’s chatter pulled him from his thoughts, and with a shake of his head, Kenji dismissed the quest and moved on. For now, it seed unimportant. There were plenty of other adventures awaiting him.

Ultimately, Kenji didn’t pick a new quest. Instead, he turned back to the children. "Alright, kiddos. How about so snacks?"

Their cheers echoed through the guild hall, and with that, the group headed into the vibrant streets.

---

As they explored the market, a vendor approached with a tray of colorful sweets. Before Kenji could respond, Haruka leapt forward, her teeth bared in a snarl. The vendor yelped, nearly dropping his tray.

"Haruka!" Kenji scolded, grabbing her by the scruff. "He’s just selling candy!"

"He could be a threat," Haruka muttered, her fur still bristling.

"To your appetite, maybe," Kenji sighed, as he apologized to the vendor for the inconvenience and Imdiately bought all of the sweets on the tray and left, feeling a bit embarrassed.

He then took Haruka to a corner and asked her to turn into her human form. Listening, Haruka did as he had asked and imdiately, Kenji began to scold her.

" Haruka! You don’t just go around attacking people like that! What if they saw you as a nance and reported you to the knights order, what am i going to do then?" Kenji said, a but annoyed by her actions.

But then he suddenly realized that she wasn’t even listening to him as she kept on sniffing the air.

" Sigh! Waht am I going to do with you?" Kenni exclaid while rubbing his temples, as he asked her what she was doing.

" Master, there’s this incredibly amazing sll wafting in the air, I want it!" Before Kenji could say anything else, Haruka ran off to the origin of the aroma.

Kenji imdiately ran after her, as he yelled at her to stop, but still she didn’t listen. And when she finally did stop, it was in front of a vendor who was portraying a plate of dishes, with the majority of them being: Pizza!

" So this was why you ran? Because of pizza?!" Kenji exclaid a bit annoyed by her defiance just because of a slice of pizza.

" Master I’m sorry, but please, can you buy it for ?" Haruka asked with cute kitten eyes that seed irresistible.

Seeing her cute exppression, Kenji couldn’t control himself and bought the pizza, asking the children who were watching from afar licking their sweets to co over and have a taste of pizza.

And imdiately, they ran over.

handing her and the children a slice of pizza, The transformation was instant—their eyes widened, and they practically lted with delight.

"This... this is amazing!" Haruka exclaid between bites.

" Yes daddy! This is aweso!"

" I want more!"

" Yes, more!"

The children giggled, their laughter infectious as they joined her in gobbling down slices. Kenji watched them with a mixture of exhaustion and fondness. His coin pouch was almost empty, and the pizza vendor was grinning like a man who just hit the jackpot.

"I’m going to be broke before the day’s over..." he muttered, though his smile betrayed him.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the group made their way to the inn, their laughter and warmth filling the air.
