Chapter 661: 229, Escalation of conflict_3 Chapter 661: 229, Escalation of conflict_3 After hearing Bart Bield’s plan, Mayo Logan felt a tingling on his scalp.
He had not expected Bart Bield to be so crazy.
If his plan were successful, not only would Lazack Babu suffer terrible losses, but many people would also die.
However, this concern lingered in Mayo Logan’s mind for only a few seconds before he laughed and said, “Don’t worry, I’ll definitely pull it off!”
A day passed quickly, and soon it was past two a.m.
on the third day.
The North District was almost deserted by then, even those who were drinking had beco overly drunk by that ti.
At that mont, several people dressed in white robes and pointy hoods, resembling mbers of the KKK, appeared in the North District.
...
They were holding torches with cola bottles filled with gasoline, covered by burlap at the mouth of the bottles.
These individuals quickly made their presence known outside Lazack Babu’s lodging apartnts, where they voiced their anger.
“Let these damned black people get out of Atlantic City!”
Such voices were incessant, and soon, people were drawn out by the noise.
When the KKK mbers saw they had an audience, they imdiately lit their gasoline bottles and threw them into Lazack Babu’s lodging apartnts through the windows.
Screams of agony were heard from inside swiftly, as soone burst into flas and leaped out of a window, only to writhe screaming on the street.
Soon that person could no longer move, falling to the ground, their body charred to a cinder!
As for those KKK mbers, they had already fled the North District by that ti.
.
Donnie had spent the previous night at the Surf Hotel.
He was woken by the phone ringing on the bedside table before he was fully awake, and Margaret got up intending to answer the phone for him.
Donnie also woke up and said, “I’ll get it!”
“Sothing big has happened!” ca Robert’s hurried voice over the phone.
“The sky hasn’t fallen!” Donnie glanced at his pocket watch.
It was just past four in the morning, and he said with so displeasure, “What’s happened?”
Robert rushed to say, “Just two hours ago, several KKK mbers burned down Lazack Babu’s lodging apartnts in the North District, killing one person and badly burning others!”
“Co over, I’m waiting for you in the study!” Donnie said with a grim expression, “And tell Chris and John to get up and be on standby.
Also, bring Mobley with you when you co!”
After hanging up the phone, Donnie got out of bed.
Margaret had already prepared his robe, “What’s happened?”
Donnie waved his hand and said, “Nothing, you continue to rest.”
Having said that, Donnie left his bedroom, freshened up, poured himself a glass of whiskey, and moved to the window, pulling back the curtains.
Outside, Atlantic City was engulfed in darkness, except for the Atlantic horizon, where the faint light of dawn just began to appear.
At this mont, Donnie pondered the unexpected situation…
Ten minutes later, the phone on Donnie’s desk rang; it was Nucky calling, and evidently, he had already heard about the incident.
Donnie didn’t say much, just told him to co to his office first.
Another ten minutes passed, and both Robert and Mobley arrived in Donnie’s office.
Seeing Mobley, Nucky directly asked, “Mobley, did your people do this?”
Just before, Donnie and Nucky had analyzed the situation, feeling that the KKK had no reason to do such a thing, and that Mobley was not the sort to be so imprudent.
Sure enough, responding to Nucky’s question, Mobley imdiately said, “Although I wish I could do it, this wasn’t done by my people.
Before I ca here, I already made a call, and it’s definitely not my n!”
“It’s no use us believing you,” Donnie said.
“Right now, not many in Atlantic City, other than the North District, know about this.
I believe by tomorrow, when the whole of Atlantic City knows, everyone will undoubtedly bla this on you KKK!”
Donnie spoke.
The KKK’s policy towards black people was well known to everyone, and in this situation, with many black eyewitnesses, whether Mobley’s people admitted it or not, everyone would hesitate to pin the bla on them.
“Hmph, what can they do even if they decide it was us?
Worst cos to worst, we’ll have a proper fight and then I’ll see who dares to be arrogant!”
Donnie glanced sidelong at Mobley and said, “There are over thirty thousand black people in the North District.
How many mbers does your KKK have in Atlantic City?
Do you want to lend you so guns?
Go ahead, have a bloody massacre, and see if you believe that if you do this, the entire KKK across Arica won’t suffer!”
Mobley just pursed his lips, not daring to confront Donnie!
At this point Nucky said, “Donnie, Louis told , this incident has already caused a huge uproar in the North District.
I believe these people will gather together soon, and we must go address this situation.”
Before the incident early this morning, Donnie and Nucky indeed had in mind to stir up so trouble in the North District so that they had reason for a major clear-out there.
But the trouble this incident had caused was obviously beyond their expectations.
The KKK’s late-night raid on the North District, the burning down of the influential Lazack Babu’s lodging apartnts, and the death caused by the fire were actions that had essentially lit the fuse of rage among the black people in the already teetering North District.
