Capítulo 1641: Chapter 607: The Election Approaches

That day, a guest arrived at Donnie’s estate in Atlantic City, and Donnie warmly welcod him.

The Governor of Kansas State, Alf Landon.

Alf Landon is also the Republican Party’s candidate for President of the United States this year.

This year is another election year in the United States, and the Republican Party has been painstakingly searching for a suitable candidate!

Herbert Hoover?

Definitely not, that na evokes painful mories.

Borah?

He does have strong public support, especially in the West, but he is unorthodox financially, and he’s too old, too independent, making control difficult.

Frank Knox from Chicago?

Vandenberg from Michigan?

All these nas were crossed out by the Republican Party.

As the national convention in Cleveland approached, the Republican Party finally settled on a candidate, Kansas State Governor Alf Landon.

Before becoming Governor of Kansas State, Alf Landon was a successful independent oil producer, and the Republican leaders believed that choosing him would please the businessn.

After all, Alf Landon cos from a business background. Additionally, he balanced the state’s budget during difficult tis and should be a qualified flag bearer in the fight against federal spending.

There were those within the Republican Party who opposed him, pointing out that Alf Landon had no choice but to balance the budget because Kansas State’s constitution requires it, and also, Kansas State heavily relies on federal governnt relief funds.

But within the Republican Party, such opponents were relatively few, and the majority opinion was that.

As a forr “Bull Moose Partyman” … this was founded by Theodore Roosevelt, the Progressive Party.

Alf Landon, who generally held liberal views, should be able to win the support of n and won who take a middle road in politics.

The stubborn dostic conservatives in the United States would support him no matter what, and to defeat Roosevelt, they would even vote for the King of Hell.

As a shrewd and seasoned political diator, Alf Landon should be willing to heed the advice of the Congress mbers.

Most Congress mbers felt Franklin Roosevelt was too autocratic toward Congress.

As a warm, friendly, and likable person, with a charming family, he himself should be a great vote-getting machine.

Even though his record may not have many dazzling achievents, he could be introduced as a low-key, humble, ordinary person, a regular fellow, not claiming to be superhuman, but possessing plain common sense and insisting on going the “Arican way.”

As a delegate attending the Cleveland convention, Alf Landon was clearly ahead, so much so that no other nas were bothered to be added to the candidate list.

Alf Landon received the nomination amidst cheers.

This “Kansas Coolidge” “ticulous Kansan,” with the sunflower as his emblem, was setting off to have a tough battle with Franklin Roosevelt!

After the Republican Party confird Alf Landon as their candidate to run for President of the United States, they imdiately provided him with a campaign platform!

Well, the main purpose of this campaign platform was to attract those middle-ground voters!

Although this platform was filled with criticisms of Roosevelt’s New Deal, it also presented a surprisingly liberal façade in so areas.

It didn’t entirely bla the federal governnt for engaging in relief efforts, although it advocated “returning the responsibility for relief from administrative departnts to non-political local institutions.”

Nor did it completely condemn federal governnt involvent in agricultural adjustnt, instead proposing a national land-use plan that wasn’t too different from the Democrats’—only relying more on state governnt.

It didn’t call for the abolition of the “Securities Act” “Securities Exchange Act” and “Public Utility Holding Company Act”… Wall Streeters had been extrely acerbic towards these laws.

But instead, it demanded “federal governnt regulation of securities markets within ‘Constitutional’ authority to protect investors.”

And it added: “We also support federal regulation of interstate operations of utility companies.”

Even so, after Donnie reviewed the Republican and Democratic campaign platforms, he focused his attention not on attack and criticism, but on the positive proposals they presented.

Donnie still concluded that this would be an impassioned election campaign.

If Republicans demanded balancing the budget and to “protect sound currency at all costs,” then Democrats also spoke of their “determination to balance the budget” and “endorsed the goal of sustainable sound currency.”

Both platforms fiercely attacked monopolies, favored collective bargaining between labor and managent, promised to protect civil liberties, supported the rit-based system for administrative bodies, and said friendly things about pension protection… although Republicans suggested modifying the social security system.

If Republicans attacked Democrats for disregarding “the integrity and authority of the Supre Court” “insisting on passing laws contrary to the Constitution,” if they pledged: to “resist any efforts to weaken the authority of the United States Supre Court.”

Then Democrats also suggested “safeguarding” the text and spirit of the “Constitution,” explaining that if national problems couldn’t be “effectively resolved through legislation within the ‘Constitution’s’ frawork, we should seek a clarifying constitutional andnt to ensure that state legislative bodies and the United States Congress have the authority to enact laws deed necessary within their respective legitimate jurisdictions…”
