SIMON~

With every step I took the dim lights leading to the office of Gabriel Gaines got brighter, and the faint sll of tal filled my nose I walked past the several doors that led to his office till I eventually got to it, the door was opened, allowing it’s a bright natural light leak into the dimly lit hallway, I stood at the doorway and fixed my eyes on him, he had his back turned to the wall as he looked through the 2-ter long transparent glass that served as his window. He knew I had entered but regardless he remained the sa way.

"You wanted to see ." He said, his voice void of any emotion, I walked into the office and stood.

"I did," I confird, he turned his head slightly before turning it back to the window.

"Take a Seat, John." He instructed and I obediently obliged, pulling out the seat that rested in front of his desk and sitting comfortably on it.

"What is this about." He asked after the creaking sounds of sitting had subsided.

"Hmmm, do we really have to be all business," I asked with a tone he had described as annoying more tis than I could count, he twirled his chair to face , his blank eyes focused on like a sniper on its target.

"What is it?" He repeated a slight smile and curved my lips as I pulled out a small case from my pockets and placed it on the table, he raised an eyebrow.

"Really?"

"Yep," I confird as I leaned back in my chair, he picked up the case and opened it.

"You’re asking my permission?" He questioned.

"Yes."

"Would you still do it if I said no?"

"Depends, are you saying ’No’?" I asked him, a smile curved his lips as he handed the case back to .

"You are one of my most trusted n, countless tis you’ve proven yourself indispensable, I trust you with my life and hers so my answer is yes, I give you my blessing to ask her hand." He said and my smile increased, sotis I forgot this wasn’t my real life, and sotis I got lost in the fantasy of John being who I really was but when he said words like ’I trust you with my life’ I would always be reminded that none of this, none of it was real.

"Thank you, Gabriel," I said as I once again inspected the ring, An actual diamond, why did I buy this?, it wasn’t necessary, I didn’t need to marry her to get closer to Gabriel so why was I doing it, I could feel Gabriel’s eyes on but I would ignore him till he finally said whatever it was that was on his mind.

"John." He finally said I looked away from the ring and straight at him, giving him my attention.

"Are you sure you want to do this?"

"Yes, why?"

"Can I speak to you as a man, not as your boss, not as the father of the woman you want to give that ring to?"

"Sure," I said as I put down the ring and focused on him.

"Marriage is hard, especially in our line of work, we don’t always co ho and the things we do— if the ones we loved knew the things we do maybe they wouldn’t love us as much," Gabriel said.

"What are you saying?"

"Nothing, I’m saying nothing, just make sure you’re a hundred percent sure you want to ask her that question before you ask it." I thought about his words and looked at the box, was I a hundred percent sure I wanted to ask her to marry ? No, but did it matter, the answer was the sa, I lifted my eyes off the boxes and back to him.

"I don’t think anyone is ever one hundred percent sure about anything but about what we do, we do it to protect them."

"It’s that the truth or what we want to believe." He replied, his voice filled with a deep but unclear sadness "Maybe we have to do what we do but the extres we go to are most tis — Unjustifiable."He continued, What was that emotion I sensed from his voice, it wasn’t regret, no his voice was the voice of a man tortured by his actions, and so is the mind of one who must make the hard choices. Tortured by the things he once deed a necessity but still I saw no sign of weakness in this man, maybe he didn’t like his job but I was sure that no matter how hard making those choices got he would still make them.

"Do you know why I got this job?" He asked abruptly, I shook my head in response but I had always been curious.

"Hate." He said bluntly.

"Hate?" I repeated.

"Hate." He confird with a vacant state "I was just a man in the military, there were so many more people with better skills, better coordination, but none of them could compare to my level of hate. All the things I’ve done, all the lengths I’ve gone to have been because of how much I hate that race." He said and I could almost feel the negative emotions radiating off his skin as he talked.

"What did they do to you?" I asked intrigued as to why he held such negative emotions toward my kind.

"Nothing. That’s the worst kind of hate, hate without cause or reason, if I had a reason maybe it would have died off with ti but I don’t, I don’t have a reason to but I hate their very existence and I curse humanity’s inferiority." Gabriel growled with a malicious grin plastered across his face and for the first ti since I had t him, there was an expression on his face. I smiled as I realized we were more similar than I had originally thought, we were both led without reason and we would go to any lengths if it ant satisfying our goals.
