The harsh glare of the interrogation room’s white light shone on Rainny White’s pallid face. Her hands were cuffed, and she sat still.
The detective in charge of the interrogation pushed a transcript in front of her, his voice cold and hard: "Where is Adam Willow? Confess honestly, and you might get a lenient sentence."
Rainny White kept her head down, saying nothing.
"Don’t be naïve; we’ve been monitoring Grace Willow for twenty-four hours. If Adam Willow dares to contact her, we’ll arrest him imdiately. It’s better to talk now than face additional charges later."
After a long silence, she finally said, "I don’t know where he is. If he’s hiding, how could I possibly find him?"
She was acutely aware that if she said sothing wrong, her son...
A few days later, in Emily Parker’s apartnt, Emily held a prescription in her hands, her gaze filled with focus.
Senior Sister Long entered with several herbs, smiling: "Emily, I went to several cities to gather these herbs. Take a look?"
Emily took the herbs, sniffed them lightly, and pinched them with her fingertips, nodding: "They’re good quality. Get that wild ginseng, and we’ll start together."
They worked together, and by evening, two jars of dark brown tonic were ready, the air filled with the aroma of dicine.
Emily handed one jar to Senior Sister Long: "Take this to Zenthar, tell the Governor to take it twice a day, morning and night. He’ll see results in half a month."
Senior Sister Long accepted the jar, unable to resist asking: "You don’t want to deliver it yourself? The Governor has been asking about you lately, saying he wants to et you a few tis."
Is the Governor’s health now entrusted to Senior Sister Long and Master Lowe?
Emily shook her head, her tone calm: "No need. There’s nothing to discuss between him and ."
She paused, rembering Aaron and Celeste longing to see the Governor, and added, "But if Aaron and Celeste want to visit him, help arrange it. Don’t stop them. The grudges of the previous generation should end with and not affect the children."
Senior Sister Long nodded understandingly and hurriedly left.
In the Zenthar study, the Governor accepted the dicine, his gaze complex: "She still won’t see ?"
Senior Sister Long nodded and quickly added: "But Emily said she wouldn’t stop Aaron and Celeste from visiting if they wanted to. The kids can co anyti."
The Governor heard this, and his previously furrowed brow relaxed a bit. He lifted the dicine and drank it in one go, the warmth of the dicine filling his heart with comfort.
Half a month passed by in a flash, and the Carter Clan Group’s board eting was underway at headquarters.
Carlos sat at the head of the table, holding the latest stock report. Beside him, Oliver Ross sounded excited: "Boss, the news of Blackstone Capital and Tempest Capital’s joint investnt boosted stock prices by twenty-five points as soon as it was announced. The official statent cleared the smuggling rumors, stabilizing the Carter Clan’s stock!"
Carlos glanced up at the report where "Tempest Capital" was ntioned, a trace of surprise in his eyes as he looked at Oliver Ross.
"You said before that Tempest Capital, which rivals us with Blackstone, was founded by Emily?"
Oliver Ross nodded, his tone even more enthusiastic: "Yes! I only found out recently that the founder of Tempest Capital is our boss’s wife. She’s been hiding her talents so well!"
Carlos’s lips curled into a smile. No wonder Emily’s vision and skills always felt extraordinary; she turned out to be the helm of Tempest Capital.
He took out his phone and ssaged Emily: "Today I’m going to court with Mom and Maria to hear Evan Palr’s sentencing. Can you pick Celeste up from kindergarten for ?"
Within two minutes, Emily’s reply arrived: "Sure, I’ll go after I’m done."
Those simple words inexplicably settled Carlos’s heart.
The courtroom was filled with the clear voice of the judge’s sentencing.
"The defendant Evan Palr is found guilty of preditated murder and comrcial fraud, sentenced to twenty years imprisonnt."
As soon as the judge’s words fell, Evan Palr collapsed in despair at the defendant’s seat, while Mrs. Carter sat in the audience, her face calm, her heart untouched by any ripple.
Maria Carter held her mother’s hand tightly, whispering, "Mom, are you okay?"
Mrs. Carter turned to her, a look of relief in her eyes as she gently patted her daughter’s hand: "I’m fine. From today, the past is truly past."
The feelings that entangled her for most of her life finally dissipated with this ruling.
The three of them left the courthouse at sunset, the sky tinged with twilight.
A bloated figure blocked their path.
"You damned Carter Clan, none of you will die in peace!"
Grace Willow’s curses were sharp and harsh as she wore a faded old coat. Her once black hair was now gray and white, ssy against her scalp.
The wrinkles at the corners of her eyes were deep trenches, making her appear twenty to thirty years older, in stark contrast to the well-maintained Mrs. Carter.
She stumbled forward as if intending to attack, but the bodyguards stopped her in ti. She pointed at Mrs. Carter, spitting in rage.
"You ruined Evan! He was sentenced to twenty years! And my son, Adam, he’s still missing!
Carlos, he’s your brother! How could you do this to him?"
Carlos stood in front of his mother and sister, his tone cold: "Evan’s fate is his own doing. The law doesn’t wrong anyone. Adam’s disappearance was his own choice to flee, which has nothing to do with us Prescotts!"
"Nothing to do with you?" Grace Willow suddenly laughed bitterly, sitting on the ground, her laughter filled with despair.
"If it weren’t for the Prescott’s relentless pressure, would Evan end up like this? Would Adam be forced into hiding?"
She beat her chest, tears, and snot streaming down her face, "Now Evan is imprisoned, Adam is gone, and my daughter is dead.
The creditors took my house and money; I have to live in cheap rent without a bathroom, hiding from creditors daily, living in fear!"
She pointed at the Prescott, her voice filled with hatred: "You ruined everything! You destroyed my family, my life!"
Mrs. Carter watched her quietly, her gaze without hate or pity.
"Grace Willow, the path we choose is our own. Evan’s greed led him to break the law; Adam’s wrongdoings made him flee instead of facing consequences, these choices were not forced upon you."
She paused, her glance sweeping over Grace’s disheveled appearance, "Holding onto bitterness only harms yourself; it’s ti to wake up."
With those words, Mrs. Carter turned and left.
Grace Willow continued crying and cursing behind her, her venomous words scattered by the wind, failing to stir any emotion in Mrs. Carter’s heart.
In the evening, Emily prepared to pick up the two children, arriving at the kindergarten as usual.
Emily looked at the ssages Carlos sent her, about Evan Palr being sentenced to twenty years, and thought of Adam Willow still on the run, sighing lightly.
It all seed to be the consequence of the Willow Family’s actions.
The cheerful laughter of children reached her ears as kindergarten ended, and Emily looked for the two children’s figures in the crowd.
But after a while, she only saw Celeste coming over alone.
