"Not exactly. A trap is just a container, used to hold things."
"However, in this context, it's pretty much the sa thing," Qin Xu's calm voice ca through.
Niu Wei clenched his teeth, closed his eyes.
The door suddenly opened, and Qin Xu, with a cold expression, looked at him and said, "Co out."
Niu Wei looked at him, their gazes eting for a few seconds. His shoulders suddenly slumped, and he pressed his lips together without saying a word. He took a step forward and walked out.
Zhouzhou, quick on her feet, snatched his phone away. She looked at the ssage on the screen, snorted, and said, "I knew you weren't a good person."
Niu Wei didn't explain anything. He lowered his head and silently followed them out.
As they made their way outside, the team mbers walked over and urged, "Boss, Niu Wei, hurry up."
"We don't need to go anymore," Qin Xu said, his tone indifferent. "The operation's canceled."
"What?" The team mbers stared at him in disbelief. "Why?"
"Lei Dao and his crew killed forr chief and so many of our colleagues. How can you cancel the mission?"
"The intel was wrong. We haven't located him yet," Qin Xu replied. "We'll go after him when we do."
"Before that, we need to handle so internal matters."
"Internal matters? What's going on?" They all looked confused, glancing between Qin Xu and Niu Wei.
Qin Xu didn't explain further. He just led Niu Wei to the interrogation room.
Niu Wei walked behind him, still silent, his head hung low.
Zhouzhou followed closely behind, skipping happily.
Looking at the three of them, the rest of the team exchanged puzzled looks. They couldn't figure out what was happening.
One of them hesitated, rembering sothing they had discussed earlier. "Could it be... there really is a mole?"
The operation had been suddenly called off, and they were told the intel was wrong. This was the first ti sothing like this had happened. Qin Xu was usually ticulous. He wouldn't make such a careless mistake.
So there could only be one reason for this: It was a trap to flush out the mole.
And the mole was... Niu Wei?
Impossible.
They exchanged looks, unable to believe this conclusion.
In the interrogation room, Chief Wang was already present. Qin Xu and Zhouzhou quietly sat on one side, watching Niu Wei without speaking.
Niu Wei sat with his head lowered, still not uttering a word.
After a while, Chief Wang, looking at the ssage on Niu Wei's phone, slamd the table, pointing at Niu Wei and shouting, "It was you all along!"
"You monster! Do you even have a conscience? That was your ntor! Your colleague with whom you spent years together! How could you betray us like this?"
Hearing this, Niu Wei's tears fell instantly. His face twisted with pain as he mumbled, "I'm sorry."
"Sorry?" Chief Wang sneered. "What good is an apology? Can it bring back your ntor or those colleagues' lives?"
"Twelve lives, twelve families, and you could do this?"
Fuming with rage, Chief Wang hurled his teacup at Niu Wei. It hit him square on the forehead with a loud crash, and the teacup shattered on the floor.
A bump imdiately swelled up on Niu Wei's forehead.
Zhouzhou was startled and quickly hid behind Qin Xu.
Qin Xu gently patted her head, comforting her.
Chief Wang froze for a mont, noticing him, and glared at Niu Wei with so much hatred that it seed like he wanted to slice him into pieces. His fists clenched, and he took a deep breath, trying to suppress his rage. He asked, "Why did you do this? What did Lei Dao offer you that made you betray us?"
Niu Wei remained silent, his only response was a string of "sorry."
Chief Wang, annoyed and impatient, covered Zhouzhou's ears with one hand and slapped the table again. "Speak!"
Zhouzhou turned her head and glanced at him. She had already heard everything! His hand wasn't even covering her ears properly.
Chief Wang noticed this and gave her a sheepish smile, apologizing with his eyes.
Zhouzhou didn't say anything more, understanding that it was a mont of stress for him.
After a long pause, Niu Wei suddenly whispered, "When did you guys find out?"
He had been careful, leaving no traces, so how could they know?
But today's turn of events clearly showed that Qin Xu must have known for a while.
Niu Wei wasn't stupid. He understood the reason behind this. They couldn't find any concrete evidence, so they had to catch him red-handed.
There was no way to explain himself now. And honestly, he didn't want to.
Hearing this, Zhouzhou imdiately raised her little chubby hand and said, "I figured it out!"
Niu Wei's eyes seed to lose focus, and he looked at her in a daze.
He knew Zhouzhou, and he also knew about her special ability to help catch criminals through reading their faces.
She could see through people who had done bad things.
Realizing this, he leaned back in his chair, feeling a sense of release after five years of careful concealnt. He finally relaxed.
He wiped his face and said, "Five years ago, I t a girl. We got along very well, and we were engaged."
Chief Wang frowned. They were aware of this. The girl had even co to pick him up from work, and it seed like they were happy together. But then, for so unknown reason, they broke up. When they asked Niu Wei, he simply said that they weren't compatible and parted ways. No one knew the real reason behind the breakup.
Niu Wei continued, "Just before the mission to capture Lei Dao, I was preparing, and she took the opportunity to look through my computer while I was asleep. She found out about our mission and inford Lei Dao..."
At this point, his eyes deepened with more pain.
He lowered his head in sha.
Chief Wang understood imdiately. He was furious. "You fool!"
"So you helped him destroy everything?"
Niu Wei couldn't defend himself. Like a broken man, he slumped forward on the desk, crying uncontrollably.
"I didn't think that my carelessness would lead to the deaths of my ntor and the others."
"Before the mission, she tricked into leaving, which is why I wasn't there with them when they died."
Qin Xu couldn't help but laugh in anger. "So, you thought she loved you? You helped her keep betraying us?"
His fist clenched, his veins bulging.
Zhouzhou looked at him with her little chubby hand resting on his, also glaring at Niu Wei with fury in her eyes.
She didn't care whether they loved each other or not. All she knew was that they killed many innocent people, good people!
Even if Niu Wei was innocent the first ti, every mission after that—until just now—he had been secretly tipping them off. Nobody was forcing him to do this.
He had turned bad on his own!
Upon hearing this, Niu Wei's eyes grew even more pained.
"I know she didn't love . She was just using ."
"After I realized what had happened, I wanted to turn myself in, but she said she was pregnant. If I confessed, she would kill herself."
"Later, she was taken by Lei Dao, and they used her and the child to threaten , forcing to pass on every bit of intel."
"It was only recently that I found out she's actually Lei Dao's biological daughter. She ca to as part of his plan."
"But by then, I had no way out."
He had spent years trying to catch criminals, hoping to numb himself.
Every ti he closed his eyes, he would see his ntor and the others.
It was all his fault.
His face was filled with regret and guilt.
But Zhouzhou, her fists clenched, suddenly charged forward and punched him in the stomach.
"Pah! Love-struck fools!"
