Chapter 518: Chapter 518: Birthday Song of a Cancer Patient_1
After ending the phone call, Qin Sisi let out a sowhat dejected sigh.
Ye You, watching her closely, already had a guess in his mind. He said softly, "Don’t worry, if they don’t have it, we can go find it ourselves."
With a worried expression, Qin Sisi shook her head and said: "The Yellow Cat’s family is definitely more traveled than us and they don’t have any news either. I suspect that the ghosts in S City are about to disappear."
Ye You reassured her: "Rest assured, there will always be unending ghosts. As long as people still exist, people will continue to die, and many won’t be able to let go of their obsessions."
Reflecting on Ye’s words, Qin Sisi suddenly had a thought and asked, "Is it that we can only collect the soul power from ghosts?"
Ye You was taken aback, asking, "What do you an?"
Qin Sisi gathered her thoughts and said: "Could we find people who are severely ill or dying but have not yet passed on? They would also have many unfulfilled wishes. We could negotiate with them and acquire their soul power after their death."
Ye You’s eyes lit up at this idea. He had been stuck in the conventional thinking that soul power could only be obtained from ghosts, because living people would never willingly give up their soul power.
However, people who are gravely ill might react differently. Negotiating with them might turn out to be more straight-forward and smooth than negotiating with ghosts.
Ye You praised her, saying to Qin Sisi: "That’s smart. I never thought we could do this."
Qin Sisi shyly chuckled and replied: "I only just thought of this option."
Ye You pondered for a while before he remarked earnestly: "The idea is good. However, when we implent it, we must be sure that the person is seriously ill and nearing death, and their remaining life must be within three months. If it’s longer, then it’s of no use to us."
Qin Sisi nodded. It was the lunar calendar’s third month and in four months and a bit, it would be the fifteenth of July. They had to find a person who could offer their soul power before then.
Upon reflection, it didn’t seem like it would be easy to find a suitable person. But as they currently had no other leads on ghosts, they might as well try their luck.
For three consecutive nights, under the cover of the Invisible Bubble, Qin Sisi and Ye You lingered around the vicinity of the Intensive Care Unit at S City’s First Hospital.
Initially, she had thought of understanding the patients’ conditions by referring to the doctors’ dical records. However, when she finally had the chance to open the records without the nursing staff noticing, she sadly realized she couldn’t understand any of it.
Being out of her field looked like being out of touch with reality. All the dical jargon left her feeling confused, forcing her to abandon the idea.
They still had to rely on Ye You to use his magic. In the monts when the nurses and doctors were asleep, he accessed their mories to learn about the patients’ conditions.
In the end, Qin Sisi set her sights on a female patient, Liu Ying, thirty-two-years-old, suffering from stomach cancer. The diagnosis had unfortunately co too late and her condition was already quite serious. According to the doctors, she probably had only a month left to live.
Liu Ying used to be a head nurse at this hospital. Qin Sisi felt regretful for her. Upon extracting information from the other nurses’ mories, she found out that Liu Ying was highly capable and dedicated to her job. She also had a happy family and a loving husband who worked as a doctor at the sa hospital.
However, the couple didn’t have any children. Apparently, they had been planning to conceive a child when the cancer surfaced out of the blue.
Qin Sisi went over in her mind the facts she’d pieced together about Liu Ying and decided to visit the young and excellent head nurse the following evening.
On the night of the eighth in the lunar March, Qin Sisi, suitably equipped, returned to the First City Hospital.
She made her way to the intensive care unit, finding Liu Ying’s room without a hitch.
Liu Ying was in a single room. Perhaps this was the hospital’s consideration for their staff, or maybe her family could afford the extravagant dical bills.
When Qin Sisi carefully pushed open the door to the ward, she was surprised to find that Liu Ying wasn’t asleep. It was after midnight. Isn’t the patient supposed to get a good rest?
Qin Sisi gently closed the door and stood in a corner near the wall, observing the busy Liu Ying.
Liu, dressed in a patient’s gown, was extrely thin, likely due to her illness. Her hair had thinned out drastically because of the chemotherapy, so she had donned a black narrow-brimd hat.
At that mont, she was sitting on the edge of the bed with a stool in front of her. From a bag next to her, she was pulling out one white candle after another and placing them on the stool.
The number of white candles kept increasing, there seed to be dozens of them, and the stool was almost full.
Finally, Liu Ying pulled out the last candle from the bag; this last candle was half a stick, significantly shorter than the others.
Looking at the half-a-stick candle, a strange smile appeared on Liu’s face as she quietly remarked, "you sure have slimd down, you can’t even make up 32 candles."
Qin Sisi watched in puzzlent. She thought about it for a while but couldn’t figure out what that ant.
Liu placed all the candles neatly on the stool, then picked up a lighter and lit them one by one.
She was slow and focused while lighting them, tending to each candle before moving on to the next.
Sisi suddenly had a strange feeling. Liu seed to be entirely engrossed in her own world. She paid the outside world no mind and didn’t seem to care about anyone else. It was as if only she existed in this world.
But she rembered Ye saying after reading the mory of a nurse, that Liu Ying had a husband and that they were deeply in love.
It should be impossible for a person who still has attachnt to soone to behave so indifferently.
As Qin Sisi was deep in her thoughts, Liu Ying had set all the candles alight. Looking at the dozens of flickering candle flas in front of her, a satisfied smile appeared on Liu Ying’s face. She then rose from the bed and turned off the light switch near her bed. The whole room beca dim, lit up only by the tiny lights of the candles.
"Happy birthday to , happy birthday to ..."
Crossing her fingers and propping her chin, Liu closed her eyes and began to humming softly.
Qin Sisi was even more puzzled. She didn’t expect that today was her birthday. While it is traditional to blow out candles and sing the birthday song during birthdays, the candles shouldn’t be white!
Despite that, Liu Ying seed very absorbed, beginning the song afresh after finishing the first ti.
Qin Sisi was affected. It was likely to be Liu Ying’s last birthday in this world. She was all alone, with no friends or family around her. It was cold and desolate.
