Chapter 21: Chapter 21: The Magical Mahogany Bracelet_1
Qin Sisi seed to have thought of sothing. She stared into Ye You’s dark purple eyes and asked seriously: "Xiao Hei, you have a way to save her, don’t you?"
Ye You looked at Qin Sisi’s calm face and suddenly laughed: "Yes, but..."
"But what?" Qin Sisi persisted in asking.
"But, I need an assistant."
Qin Sisi also laughed: "Isn’t that in front of you?"
I need an assistant.
Isn’t that in front of you?
These two lines of dialogue always linger in the mories of Ye You and Qin Sisi. That’s when they first tacitly cooperated, hand in hand to face a looming and unpredictable battle.
Ye You asked with interest: "Are you not afraid?"
Qin Sisi thought about it and replied: "I am a little scared, but I feel like you’re much stronger."
Ye You’s eyes shone: "Are you scared of ?"
Qin Sisi was taken aback. She felt an odd emotion in Ye You’s tone. With her face slightly red, she turned her head away, deflecting, "Why don’t we talk about sothing practical? When are we leaving?"
Ye You seed indifferent to her evasion, answering in a light tone: "No hurry, we’ll head out in the late night."
Qin Sisi said anxiously: "How can we not hurry? What if the fierce ghost cos out and hurts more people?"
Ye You explained: "When I left that day, I left behind two symbols in the store. One to suppress his spiritual power, and the other to prevent him from escaping. Don’t worry."
Qin Sisi blinked. Looking at Ye You, her eyes held a mix of relief and profound realization.
Ye You lifted his head and asked: "Why are you looking at
like that?"
Qin Sisi just laughed and didn’t say anything. So, Ye You had been prepared all along. Even if she hadn’t spoken up, he would have definitely gone. After all, how could he miss an opportunity to gather more ghost essences to open the ti tunnel?
Ye You didn’t ask further. His gaze fell on the mahogany bracelet on Qin Sisi’s wrist. "That bracelet, do you still like it?" he asked.
Qin Sisi lifted her arm in confusion, rotating the bracelet. Replying with Ye You’s tone, she said: "It’s alright."
Seeing Qin Sisi’s indifference, Ye You said in a serious tone: "Don’t underestimate this bracelet. It’s made from a thousand-year-old mahogany. The runes carved on it functions as a talisman, and it’s been soaked in pure rooster’s blood for eighty-one days. Ordinary ghosts and spirits would not dare to co near you."
Qin Sisi’s mouth dropped open in awe: "That’s amazing! Where did you get it from?"
Ye You turned his head away sowhat embarrassed and mumbled: "I happened to co across it at an antique market... So I took it..."
Qin Sisi was startled for a mont, then quickly realized: "Did you steal it?"
Ye You coughed awkwardly before saying: "Don’t make it sound so crude. This item must have been looted from an ancient tomb by soone else. It’s not clean to begin with."
Qin Sisi retaliated: "Taking sothing without permission is stealing. What you did is wrong, especially since it’s such a valuable item."
Ye You frowned and retorted coldly: "The owner had no idea what he had in his hands. The bracelet was just piled up with a bunch of other junk. Even if he did sell it, he wouldn’t have made much from it. Keeping it in his possession would just be a waste."
"But..."
"There are no buts," Ye You cut off Qin Sisi’s rebuttal abruptly, "I don’t have any money, and you’re poor too. Should I go and tell him that this is a priceless treasure? If I did that, you think you’d be able to get this bracelet?"
Qin Sisi lowered her head in grievance. She had to admit Ye You made a valid point. The item’s provenance was murky, and the dealer had no idea about its value. Even if it was sold, it wouldn’t fetch a high price. But still, carrying around a stolen item all the ti left her feeling uncomfortable.
Seeing Qin Sisi look dismayed, Ye You softened his tone: "Alright, if it makes you feel better, I’ll take you back there to pay him off when we have ti."
Qin Sisi looked up at Ye You, surprised: "Really?"
Ye You nodded: "Of course, but let’s make one thing clear: I am not going to tell him the real value of this object."
Since the dealer didn’t know the price, he probably wouldn’t ask for much. Thinking this through, Ye You sighed: when did he beco so concerned about money? It’s like a dragon caught in a shallow shoal, or a tiger fallen on level ground.
Qin Sisi smiled: "Alright." As long as they paid what the dealer asked for, her conscience would be clear.
Since Ye You said they would go in the late night, there was plenty of ti left. After washing the dishes, it wasn’t even eight in the evening. Thus, Qin Sisi began to pepper Ye You with questions about magic, like an inquisitive child. Ye You patiently answered each of Qing Sisi’s questions, but he gave rather simple answers to avoid getting into deep specifics, as there were things she wouldn’t understand yet.
Qin Sisi asked: "In TV shows and books, they talk about Taoists, monks, and the like, who have mana and can exorcise demons and ghosts. Is that true?"
Ye You replied: "Any long-standing religion has its thods of practice. As long as one adheres to them, and with a certain amount of luck, it’s not impossible to foresee the future and communicate with spirits. However, very few people ever reach this level."
Qin Sisi continued: "I watched a cody film when I was young where they fought ghosts with chocolate and captured them in cling wrap. That’s not true, is it?" Qin Sisi couldn’t help but laugh as she asked the question.
What a silly question! Ye You replied with so amusent: "Not at all, that’s simply made-up nonsense."
Qin Sisi nodded: "I thought so too. I have another question: does everyone turn into a ghost after they die?"
Ye You shook his head: "No, most spirits leave their body and get taken away by the ssenger of Death. They forget their past lives and are reincarnated. Only a small fraction, who have strong attachnts and refuse to simply leave, remain in the human world as ghosts."
Qin Sisi seed to understand: "I see. So do all the ghosts who stay in the real world know magic?"
Ye You replied: "Ghosts are ethereal, so they can move swiftly, and pass through walls. So ghosts bear no ill will and simply exist in silence. The ghost in my space is one such ghost. There are so, though, burdened by a great resentnt and unwillingness towards their own death. These beco fierce ghosts, or evil spirits, who can harm humans."
Listening to this, Qin Sisi felt a chill creep over her. She asked worriedly: "How strong is the fierce ghost in the dumpling store? Are you confident that you can deal with it?"
Ye You glanced at Qin Sisi: "Didn’t you say earlier that you think I’m stronger? Why are you doubting
now?"
"Uh..." Qin Sisi touched her nose with her curled fingers, trying to appease him: "Of course, I trust you. I just don’t have much confidence in myself."
Even though Ye You had said that she possessed magical power, she was still completely clueless about how to wield it. Facing such a terrifying fierce ghost, she felt a little intimidated.
