Zaber stared for a long ti at the pool ford from the blue liquid. The surface of the pool was calm. The damp scent rising from the sli liquid still enveloped his surroundings.
"It is ti to move to the next stage," he said in a low but resolute voice.
Zaber turned back and headed toward the tent. With each step he took, drops of sli liquid dripped from his body onto the ground. A short while later, he reached the front of the tent.
Near the tent, Luna was preparing food. Hot steam rose from the pot, spreading a fragrance around, while the fire crackled softly. The mont Luna saw Zaber, she froze for an instant. Her face flushed red, her eyes dropped to the ground, and she turned her head away.
Zaber looked at Luna but understood nothing from her state. Without a word, he turned to the crow.
"Where is the sli I brought?"
As the crow erged from inside the tent, it staggered upon seeing Zaber. Its eyes involuntarily fell from Zaber to the ground, its breathing quickened slightly.
"It... master... yes... it is inside the tent," it said, its voice trembling.
Zaber spoke in a serious tone:
"Bring it out."
"Y-yes, master..." said the crow and brought out the sli.
Zaber took the sli in his hand; the liquid slid slowly between his fingers.
"Has Gobuto not returned?" he asked in a cold tone.
The crow paused for a mont in thought.
"Not yet, master. He should return soon," it said cautiously.
Zaber took one step forward.
"Good," he said.
At that mont, he sensed soone running toward them from afar. From the direction of the forest ca the sounds of branches snapping and hurried breathing. A dark silhouette leaped out from between the trees and lunged straight at Zaber.
Zaber shifted his center of gravity, spun backward, and delivered a powerful kick with his right foot to the face of the approaching silhouette.
It was Gobuto.
Gobuto collapsed to the ground. Drool flowed from his mouth, his face was flushed, his eyes glazed. His breathing ca unevenly.
Zaber regarded Gobuto with a disgusted gaze.
"What happened to you?" he said in a cold tone.
Upon hearing this voice, Gobuto recognized Zaber. In an instant, mories flashed through his mind: Zaber slashing his chest, trying to kill him back then, the things done in the village, the fear from that ti...
Gobuto slamd his head hard against the ground and knelt.
"Y-you have returned, master..." he said in a trembling voice.
Zaber looked at the drool flowing from Gobuto’s mouth.
"Why are you in this state?" he said.
Gobuto could not speak. His breathing constricted, his body shook.
Zaber took another step closer to him.
Gobuto raised his head. The mont he saw Zaber, his drool flowed even more heavily, his breathing quickened.
Zaber did not hesitate for a mont. He lifted his foot and kicked Gobuto in the face again.
"Do not make repeat myself. If your life is dear to you," he said in a cold tone.
Gobuto pressed his head firmly against the ground. His body trembled, he barely controlled his breathing.
The crow turned to Zaber in fear.
"Master... you... your clothes are gone... you are... handso... everything is visible..." it said, its voice trembling.
Zaber glanced at Gobuto with the corner of his eye.
"Well, what of it?" he said in an indifferent tone.
The crow slamd its head against the ground.
Its voice trembling—"Gobuto... he is a goblin... goblins have a very strong desire to mate... When he attacked Luna a week ago, I knocked him unconscious...
The crow paused for a mont, then continued:
"He... he wants to mate with you..."
A chill ran through Zaber, as if cold had passed inside him. His body shivered.
Without saying anything, he hurried into the tent. A mont later, he erged outside wearing his coat.
Zaber turned to the crow.
"Tie Gobuto up. I will decide his punishnt later," he said in a resolute tone.
The crow raised its head. Hope flashed in its eyes.
"Yes, master," it said.
The crow extended its hand toward Gobuto. It bent three fingers and raised two upward. Its hand glowed with black mana.
Gobuto was lifted into the air.
Zaber paid little attention to this. He headed toward the sli liquid.
Luna had covered her face with her hand. She slowly lowered her hand and looked at Gobuto with anger.
The crow took Gobuto to a tree.
Luna took so cloth and firmly tied Gobuto to the tree.
As Zaber walked cradling the sli, the sound of his footsteps echoed. The peculiar damp, slightly bitter scent of the slis still lingered in the air.
The desire to mate?
But in the end, it is only for continuing the lineage.
Physical pleasures never bring happiness, he thought coldly.
Lost in these thoughts, he soon reached the previous pit. The blue liquid was calm, as if hundreds of slis had never existed there. Only the faint pressure and gentle vibration rising from the bottom of the pit reminded him that this place was not ordinary.
Zaber looked at the blue liquid. His gaze was deep and scrutinizing.
Then he extended the sli forward with both hands.
A soul chain erged from his wrist and instantly pierced the sli’s body. The soul was extracted. The sli’s body softened like water, flowed from Zaber’s hand, and rged with the liquid.
Zaber held onto the soul.
"This one is different from the others..." he said in a low voice.
The soul was pink in color. This hue was unusual. Zaber furrowed his brows.
"Did it take on this shade because I infused black mana?" he whispered.
In the next instant, Zaber’s hands glowed black. With both hands, he began transferring mana to the soul. The soul seed to fragnt, but in the next mont, it began to reform. Its color gradually changed.
Zaber watched with a wide smile, with open eagerness. This was an expression that rarely appeared on his face.
After a while, the soul began to change color. A strange pressure descended in the air.
Sweat began to flow from Zaber’s face. Drops fell from his chin into the liquid.
In the next mont, the soul’s color shifted to a dark blue mixed with black.
Zaber narrowed his eyes slightly. Holding the soul firmly with one hand, he raised his voice a little:
"You have no right to fail."
He threw the soul into the pool.
The soul plunged into the blue liquid. Zaber’s breathing quickened as he stared fixedly at the pool. His heartbeat gradually accelerated.
Nothing seed to be happening.
"I gave five-eighths of my mana..." he said in a low voice.
In the next mont, small bubbles began to rise from within the blue liquid. First a few, then more. The number of bubbles increased rapidly, and they began to grow larger.
Zaber straightened his posture and watched.
In the next mont, the liquid began to ripple. The pressure suddenly intensified.
In an instant, a face-like shape rose from the liquid.
"GHHAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!"
The scream shook the entire pit.
Zaber raised his voice in a satisfied tone:
"I expected nothing less from you."
The sli sensed Zaber and tried to rise to attack him, but its enormous body prevented it. It shook heavily and sank back down.
Zaber bit his finger, drawing blood, and sprinkled his blood toward the sli. The mont the blood touched the sli’s body, it was absorbed, as if swallowed.
Zaber hesitated for a mont.
It has no intellect yet.
But whether my blood is useful to it or not—this will show.
More bubbles erged from the sli’s body. When they burst, a strange gas began to rise into the sky. The air grew heavier, the pressure intensified further.
The beginning of a new stage was clearly felt within the pit.
This gas slowly dispersed in the air, forming a hazy mist. The mist was not thick; it moved as if alive. A light breeze prevented it from staying in one place, gradually spreading it through the air.
Ten minutes later, the sli’s body began a sharp transformation. It shrank to one-tenth of its previous size. Separating from its water-like spread mass, it condensed and ford a round, large shape. Its surface was smooth, but the energy slowly moving inside was clearly perceptible.
Zaber slid down the pit wall. His feet sank into the liquid, but he paid no attention to it.
The sli stared fixedly at Zaber. It had no face yet, but a gaze-like center had appeared, as if sensing Zaber with its entire body.
Zaber stood up. He held his body upright.
He directed his killing intent toward the sli. The surrounding air grew heavier. Waves of black and red pressure seed to radiate from Zaber. He stepped forward and began walking toward the sli.
"I am the reason you were born," he said in a cold tone.
"Do you dare attack ?"
The sli had only just co into the world. Its will was not yet ford; its mind contained only instincts. Therefore, it was utterly defenseless against this killing intent.
The sli’s body suddenly began to tremble. The liquid inside it vibrated unevenly, as if sothing inside was trying to escape.
Zaber approached.
He grasped the sli.
Zaber’s fingers sank into the sli’s body. There was no solidity—it was empty like liquid, but a strong suction pressure was felt inside. The blood flowing from Zaber’s fingers was directly consud by the sli.
The blood drops absorbed into the sli’s body; the spots where they absorbed montarily turned darker, then returned to blue. The sli’s trembling intensified. It was as if this blood was both tornt and nourishnt to it.
No sign of pain appeared on Zaber’s face. He only watched the sli with a cold gaze.
