78: Chapter 66: Entering

“Those two people just t their fate,” the staff mber’s arrogant tone infuriated everyone, and the silent line began to grow noisy as everyone whispered among themselves.

“Brother,”

Gu Yanlin softly called out to Gu Yanzhi, who looked up at him and nodded knowingly.

Then Gu Yanlin, pulling Zhao Rui along, approached Chu Guodong and whispered sothing to him.

Chu Guodong nodded and gestured for them to return soon; Gu Yanlin and Zhao Rui then quietly left the line and chased after the father and daughter they saw earlier.

Gu Yanlin and Zhao Rui weren’t gone long, only about ten minutes or so.

“Did you find them?”

Upon their return, Chu Guodong casually asked.

“Yes, we gave it to them,”

Gu Yanlin looked at the father and daughter; the daughter was severely feverish, and without treatnt, her chances were slim.

Feeling pity and rembering the ergency dicines Gu Yanzhi had prepared in his backpack, he handed them over with the consent of Gu Yanzhi and Chu Guodong.

He wasn’t a doctor and couldn’t treat the girl; he could only give her so fever-reducing dication.

Whether she would survive was up to her luck.

Another hour passed, and their group finally reached the entrance; by then, it was completely dark.

There were a few people ahead of them being turned away from Liancheng Base because they didn’t have enough food; undeterred, they camped not far from the base.

Song Zhao, pushing Gu Yanzhi in the wheelchair, was at the forefront.

The staff mber in the guardhouse saw them enter and, in a foul tone, stopped them, “Hey, hey, hey, you, the cripple and his family, where are your supplies?”

“Who are you calling a cripple?” Gu Yanlin, hearing this unfriendly voice, clenched his fists, ready to confront the man if he dared to speak another word.

The others of Squad 532 were also ready to defend; to them, Gu Yanlin’s sister was their sister, and nobody could mock their family.

“Are there any other cripples here?” The man said disdainfully without looking up.

“You,” Gu Yanlin’s fist was nearly on the glass, a bit more force and it would smash through and hit that petty man’s smug face, but Gu Yanzhi stopped him.

“Yan Lin, it’s in the car,” Gu Yanzhi coldly glanced at the man, sending shivers down his spine.

Seeing that Gu Yanzhi and his group weren’t easy to provoke and that they had a car—a sign of wealth in these tis—the staff mber didn’t dare say more and just asked them to bring the car through the vehicle entrance as directed by the signs.

Three people went back to get the car, and the rest waited at the entrance of the driveway; the car arrived, and they drove in.

Once inside, Gu Yanzhi, using the faint light, noticed that the base was being fortified with brick walls inside the ice walls, likely just started since the brick walls were only a third as tall as the ice walls, with many bricks and sacks of cent scattered nearby.

This asure was probably taken by the base’s administrators, anticipating the rising temperatures.

From the outside, the entrance had two paths, one for cars and the other for people, but inside, it divided into four lanes separated by ice walls.

Signs hung over each lane, visible through the dim torchlight; Gu Yanzhi made out two lanes for cars and two for pedestrians,

corresponding to those with or without residence registration.

It wasn’t until inside that they were directed based on their ID cards to different lanes.

The three vehicles drove up to the leftmost lane and were stopped at the entrance.

Ard staff approached, “Hello, please get out of the car and proceed with the entry procedures.

Park here for now and move the vehicle after registration.”

The staff mber repeated the sa ssage to the other two vehicles.

Exiting the vehicles, the group entered the nearby registration office.

The room was small, barely fitting the nine of them, leaving no space for additional people.

The room was well-heated, a wave of warmth greeting them as they entered.

A staff mber in front of a computer and scattered papers sat at the counter facing the door.

There was also a transparent glass room to the side with two tall individuals in black uniforms, and simply an electronic scale inside.

The glass room had a front door facing the registration room and a sealed back door, its destination indiscernible.

Gu Yanzhi guessed that the sealed back door led to the stores, where collected supplies were likely carried directly to storage, as the small room otherwise couldn’t hold much.

“Hello, where are you coming from?”

Chu Guodong sat on the only chair at the registration counter, the rest standing behind him.

The staff mber typed on the computer while asking.

“City C.”

“Nine people, a total of 900 kilograms of food, 30 kilograms per vehicle.

Hand over the food first, then we’ll register,” the registrar pointed to the glass room, indicating they should go there first.

“Comrade, on the way here we heard that Liancheng Base needed only 80 kilograms of food, why the increase?” Chu Guodong had gotten his information from others just a couple of days before departure; it was unexpected that the requirents had already changed.

“Too many people have been arriving recently, and the base can’t afford the expenses for so many.

We had to raise the prices,” the staff mber explained.

“Do we still need 100 kilograms of food to stay just one day?”

“Staying just for one day?” the registrar repeated in surprise; it was her first ti encountering soone who planned to stay at the base just temporarily.

“We don’t have a policy for that as you’re the first to request a temporary stay.”

These days, conditions outside were harsh, and those who could enter a base didn’t want to leave.

Though not luxurious, base life wasn’t so fraught with worries about losing everything overnight.

Confused, the registrar took a mont to respond.

“Comrade, may I see the base administrator?” Chu Guodong handed over his ID and made his request.

“Just a mont, let

contact the leader.”

“Xiao Zhao, quickly go find Minister Li; a soldier requests to see Secretary Lei.”

The registrar carefully examined Chu Guodong’s ID, deed it genuine, and gestured to one of the n in the glass room, then called out.

Xiao Zhao hurriedly ran off, and soon returned quickly with a middle-aged man.

“Hello, are you a soldier?

Could I see your ID, please?” The middle-aged man, having seen the registrar point to Chu Guodong, ca over and shook his hand, making his request.

The registrar had already returned Chu Guodong’s ID, which he was still holding, and he handed it directly to the man.
