Chapter 292: Kill him

He didn’t stop at one bite.

He tore into the at like a man who had been starving for weeks, which, in all honesty, he had been.

His jaw worked overti as he chewed and swallowed in rapid succession.

The warmth of the food quickly spread through his body in a way that felt almost surreal after so long without anything proper.

The demons around him didn’t question it. If anything, a few of them snorted in amusent.

"Damn, you look like you’ve been through hell," one of them said.

"Definitely feels like it," Elion replied between bites without even bothering to look up.

Another demon tossed him a second skewer.

"Here, before the others take it," he said lazily.

Elion caught it without hesitation.

"Appreciate it."

There were only about five demons from those gathered around the fire who were actually talking to him, and a few others chose to keep to themselves, while so other, smaller, lower-level ones did not seem to be capable of speaking the human language at all.

They seed to be responsible for doing most of the chores in the camp, while yapping in so incomprehensible ruble that Elion had never heard of.

"Which unit were you with?" one of them asked suddenly.

Elion didn’t pause.

"Northern front," he answered imdiately, like he had already prepared his reply beforehand.

A few of them grimaced.

"Tch... rough spot," one muttered, "we heard that place got wrecked about a month ago."

"Yeah," another added, "so human went crazy out there, cut through a whole line by himself."

Elion’s hand paused for just a fraction of a second.

"...Sounds about right," he said flatly.

"Command’s a ss right now," the first one continued, poking at the fire with a stick, "orders keep changing, so we’re just holding this position until further notice."

"Which is bullshit," another grumbled, "we’re sitting ducks out here."

Elion kept listening.

So this was one of the outer camps. Not important enough to guard heavily, and not important enough to send to the elites.

Perfect.

He took another bite.

"...Any movent from the coalition side?" he asked casually.

The demons shrugged.

"Not here," one said, "they’re probably regrouping after that earlier push last week."

"Or planning sothing worse," another added with a snort, "If it wasn’t for our heroes, no doubt we would have lost already."

Elion nodded lightly like he agreed.

Inwardly, he was already mapping things out about this camp and the surroundings. The direction he had co from, and the likely direction of the front lines.

And most importantly, he needed to make a quiet exit once he was done. He swallowed the last bite of the scrumptious at and exhaled quietly.

"...Good food," he muttered.

One of them laughed.

"Right? Beats whatever trash they give us on supply runs, it’s a sha we didn’t have any human for you. Quite the delicacy."

Elion’s eyes trembled, but he kept his expression neutral, leaning back slightly, with one arm resting casually over his knee.

The empty skewer hung loosely from his fingers as he let out a quiet breath. His body felt sowhat replenished after getting so actual food into his system, but he didn’t want to stay here for too long.

The fire crackled between them, sparks drifting upward into the dark canopy as the demons continued their idle chatter.

For a brief mont, it almost felt... normal, like he was just another soldier sitting around a campfire with his demon companions after a long day of tiring work.

"Elion..."

A voice cut through his thoughts. He froze internally, and his entire body went still.

"...What did you just call ?"

The lanky demon sitting across from him tilted his head slightly, his eyes narrowing as he leaned forward, his gaze fixed on Elion with a growing suspicion.

"...You said your na earlier, didn’t you?"

Elion’s mind raced.

Did he?

No.

He was sure he hadn’t.

So how...

’Wait...’ He gave it a thought. Did the demons have so way to communicate from long distance? What if they had been notified to look out for a human in disguise ahead of ti?

But if that was the case, then why was this group so relaxed around him?

’Oh...’

He looked at the at skewer in his hand. If it was poisoned, then his poison immunity would sort that out for him without any problems, aning they had miscalculated.

"Or did I hear wrong..." the demon continued slowly, his fingers tightening slightly around the halberd resting beside him.

The chatter around the fire died down.

One by one...

The others began to look over, turning around to face him.

Elion looked around, realising that he was completely surrounded. He exhaled slowly through his nose, his expression not changing in the slightest, even as the atmosphere around him grew tense.

"...You heard wrong," he said calmly in an even voice.

The demon’s eyes stayed on him.

"...Maybe," he muttered.

But he didn’t look convinced. Neither did the others. A long, heavy silence followed the brief conversation, but noone seed to make a move.

Elion’s fingers tightened slightly around the skewer.

His perception spread subtly, counting positions, distances between them and numbers.

Ten.

No...

Twelve of them with weapons within reach and the fire between them. A few tees behind. And no obstacles for at least twenty ters in one direction.

’Very good.’

"...Hey," another demon suddenly spoke up, his tone lighter, as if trying to break the tension, "if you’re from the northern front, which commander were you under?"

There it was.

The final test.

Elion’s eyes flickered briefly.

"..mander Varr," he said without hesitation.

A lie.

The reaction was imdiate. The demon across from him smiled very slowly.

"Varr..." he repeated as his smile widened into a grin.

"Funny."

He paused for a heartbeat

"...Varr died two months ago."

There was a short mont of silence.

’Oh, they did have soone have Varr after all? Close enough I guess.’ Elion mused inwardly. The sound of tal scraping softly sounded in the camp.

"...So I’ll ask again," the demon said in a low but dangerous tone, his earlier casual tone gone completely.

"Who... the hell... are you?"

Elion didn’t answer imdiately.

He just sat there for a mont, his posture still relaxed, and his gaze drifting lazily from one demon to the next. Then he sighed softly in disappointnt.

"...Ah.... I was hoping that would hold a bit longer," he muttered, "But this will save

the ti and trouble of having to leave quietly, so it’s a win in my book."

The demon’s eyes widened violently.

"Kill him!"

The shout ca instantly.

Feet scraped as the closest ones all lunged at him. Multiple weapons flashed as the circle around the fire broke into motion all at once.

However, Elion had moved as well.

Crack!

His foot slamd into the ground as he twisted his body, his arm snapping forward as the skewer in his hand shot out like a thrown dagger.

Thunk!

It buried itself straight into the throat of the closest demon, the force of it punching through flesh and bone as the man’s eyes widened in shock. Blue blood sprayed out in a thick arc as he choked on it.

Elion was already up, and he was too fast, way too fast. He moved like a phantom as a blade ca from his left...

Clang!

He caught it barehanded, his mana augnted fingers clamping around the steel as his other hand drove forward, with the fingers curled...

Crunch.

They sank straight into the demon’s chest, piercing through rib and flesh as if it were nothing, his hand reaching deep before yanking back out in a spray of dark blood.

The body dropped. Just like that, he was dead. But there was no pause. A second demon lunged from behind.

"Die...!"

Woosh.

Elion ducked low, his body twisting under the strike as his leg swept out in a roundhouse kick.

Crack...

The demon’s knee bent the wrong way with a sickening snap, his scream was cut short as Elion rose into him, his elbow smashing upward into his jaw, sending teeth and blood flying out as the male demon was thrown backward.

Just like that, within an instant, everything turned chaotic.

Shouts and roars synchronized as every single demon suddenly charged toward Elion, looking to end him quickly.

The crackling fire scattering embers as bodies clashed around it.

With so many of them, the idea of losing never registered in their minds, and they had more than expected the prey in fron of them to try to make a run for it in an attempt to save his life.

However, to their absolute shock, Elion stepped forward instead of back, right into the thick of things without so much as a flicker of hesitation in his gait.

A giant blade ca from the right, looking to cleave him diagonally down the middle at his waist. He shifted smoothly half a step, letting it graze past him before his hand snapped out in a blur of motion.

He caught the demon by the face and lifted him with nothing but raw strength, and slamd him into the ground.

Boom!

The impact was hard enough to crater the soil, and the demon’s the skull caved in on impact with a wet crunch as his blood.

Another ca, looking to make use in the montary lapse in Elion’s motion, but he was too slow.

Slash!

Elion’s blade appeared in his hand as if it had always been there, the edge cutting clean through the demon’s torso, splitting him open from shoulder to hip as blood and organs spilled out onto the forest floor.

Evertyhing suddenly ca to a stop as the others hesitated just for a mont. And that mont was everything.

Elion’s eyes were cold and empty now, as he entered that familiar battle state that he was so used to now.

[Enhanced Cognition - Lv1]

Wisps of faint, icy smoke began to curl from the edges of his eyes as his focus deepened again. His breathing beca steady and controlled, and his body moved with that sa unnatural flow.

He took one step, and one beca two, then he disappeared. He didn’t trully disappear, but he beca fast enought that it felt like it.

He beca nothing but a blur weaving through them.

Thud...

Thud...

Thud...

Bodies dropped one after another like flies. There was no wasted movent or wasted energy in his movents.

A clean cut here.

A crushed throat there.

A spine snapped.

A heart pierced.

The sounds layered over each other, accompanied by the wet squelches of blood. Within seconds, it was over.

Silence returned to the camp, broken only by the soft crackle of the fire and the quiet drip of blood hitting the ground.

Elion stood in the middle of it. His blade hung loosely at his side, dark blood sliding off the edge and dripping into the dirt.

He exhaled slowly.

"...Tch."

His detached gaze swept over the bodies as the residual effects of enhanced cognition faded away.

"...That was easy," he muttered under his breath as he flexed his fingers slightly. He wiped the blood of his sword with one of the tattered pieces of cloth on the ground and put it away in his storage.

He hadn’t even broken a single sweat.

He spread his awareness outward to check if there was anyone that could be hiding. After confirming that he had cut down everyone, he didn’t linger.

There was nothing left for him here, and he had his fill of food already. Though he did consider looking for supplies, a single sweep of his perception was all it took for him to see that there was nothing of note here.

He stepped past the bodies without a second glance, the faint sll of blood and iron trailing behind him as he moved away from the camp.

His figure slipped back into the darkness of the forest as if he had never been there to begin with while the dying fire crackled quietly behind him.
