Chapter 4: The Hunt Begins

Chapter 4

The torches in the forest multiplied quickly.

Ariana watched as dozens of lights moved through the darkness beyond the shattered windows. The trees flickered with orange glow, and long shadows stretched across the ground, shifting with every step of the figures outside. There were too many of them. Her chest tightened as the reality settled in. "They’re coming here."

Kael Vaughn stood near the doorway, his gaze fixed on the forest, studying every movent with calm, controlled focus. "Yes," he said after a mont. His voice was quiet, but there was tension beneath it now. "They’re hunting." Ariana pushed herself up from the floor, her legs still unsteady from the pain earlier. "Hunters?" she asked. Kael shook his head slightly. "Worse."

The faint silver light beneath her skin flickered again, weak but visible in the dim room. Kael noticed imdiately. His jaw tightened. "You need to control that." Ariana let out a shaky breath. "I don’t even know what it is." "Your power," Kael replied. "Or the thing that will get you killed." Outside, branches snapped under heavy movent, and voices began to echo through the trees. The sound alone was enough to make her pulse spike.

"How many are there?" she asked. Kael didn’t look away from the forest. "Too many." Her stomach dropped. "You said they’re from the council." "Yes." "Then why are they here themselves?" Kael’s eyes darkened slightly. "Because the Fifth Blood isn’t supposed to exist anymore." Ariana wrapped her arms around herself, the cold sinking deeper into her skin. "What does that an?"

For the first ti since he arrived, Kael turned toward her, and sothing shifted beneath his usual control. Not fear. Not hesitation. Conflict. "The bloodline was ant to die centuries ago," he said. Ariana shook her head imdiately. "I was born twenty-three years ago." "You’re thinking about yourself," Kael said. "I’m talking about your bloodline." The words landed heavier than anything else. She understood without him saying more. They hadn’t just been hunted. They had been erased.

"And now they’re coming to finish it," she said quietly. "Yes." The torches reached the edge of the clearing, and now she could see them clearly. Tall figures moved between the trees, fast and controlled, far too precise to be human. "How long do we have?" she asked. Kael stepped forward slightly, asuring the distance. "Two minutes." Her breath caught. "Two..." "We’re leaving," he said.

Ariana blinked, trying to process that. "You’re taking

with you?" Kael looked at her, his expression unreadable. "For now." "For now?" she repeated. "If the council finds you first, they’ll kill you," he said. "And if you find

first?" Kael didn’t answer, and that silence told her more than words could. Her stomach tightened again.

Before she could press further, a voice echoed from the forest. "Alpha Vaughn." Both of them froze. The voice carried easily through the air, calm and controlled, the kind that expected to be obeyed. "We know you’re inside." Kael’s body went still beside her. "Who is that?" Ariana whispered. "Soone we don’t want to deal with tonight," Kael said.

The forest grew brighter as more torches appeared. Dozens of figures stepped out from the trees, surrounding the house completely. Ariana’s eyes widened as the scale of it beca clear. There were at least thirty of them. "You’re trapped," the voice continued. The speaker stepped forward into the light. A tall man in a long black coat, silver hair catching the glow of the flas, red eyes gleaming faintly in the dark. Ariana felt a chill run through her.

Kael’s jaw tightened. "Lord Cassian." The vampire smiled slightly. "So you rember ." Kael didn’t return the expression. "What are you doing in my territory?" Cassian’s gaze shifted to Ariana, and the mont he saw the light beneath her skin, sothing changed in his expression. Interest. Calculation. "Well," he said quietly, "there she is."

Ariana’s chest tightened as Kael stepped slightly in front of her. Cassian noticed imdiately, his smile widening. "That’s unexpected." "Leave," Kael said. Cassian gave a soft laugh. "I’m afraid that’s not possible." He raised one hand, and behind him, the hunters moved closer. The house was completely surrounded now. "You know the law," Cassian said. "The Fifth Blood must be eliminated."

Kael didn’t move. "And if I refuse?" Cassian’s eyes sharpened. "Then you beco a traitor." The air grew heavier as the words settled. Ariana’s breath caught, but Kael remained still. Then he spoke. "You’re not taking her." The last trace of amusent disappeared from Cassian’s face. "You’re making a mistake." "Maybe," Kael said.

Cassian exhaled slowly, almost disappointed. "That’s unfortunate." He lowered his hand. "Kill them."

Everything exploded into motion. The hunters surged forward, and Ariana’s heart slamd against her ribs. Kael grabbed her wrist and pulled her toward the back. "Run." He pushed her through the doorway into the cold night air. "Don’t stop." "What about you?" she asked, panic rising. His eyes locked onto hers. "I’ll deal with them."

Before she could argue, sothing dropped from above.

A massive shape crashed into the clearing, shaking the ground hard enough to throw her off balance. Dust and debris rose into the air as the creature lifted its head slowly. Silver eyes glowed in the dark, and enormous wings unfolded behind it with a heavy, deliberate motion.

Ariana’s voice shook. "What is that?" Kael’s expression hardened instantly. "Sothing that shouldn’t be here." The creature looked directly at her, its presence pressing down on everything around them.

"We finally found you."

Its gaze locked onto her completely.

"The Fifth Blood."

Ariana felt her blood run cold as it spoke again.

"She belongs to us."

Kael stepped forward imdiately.
