Chapter 216: Chaos Everywhere
Vincent snatched the newsletter from Alec’s hand. His face was serious as he read everything written on it.
Lauren was stunned. It took her a mont to ask Alec.
"Why? What happened?"
"Soone in the Supre House exposed the truth of her birth. The chief’s position can only be passed to the biological heir just like how it is in royal families. Eleazar’s bloodline has been leading the Supre House for centuries. The fact that Amber is not his real daughter and he hid it from everyone is a big blow."
Lauren watched Alec. He had known Amber since childhood and at so point, she had beco family to him. His lips pursed in a grim line, telling her he was annoyed. It wasn’t showing on his face but she guessed he must be concerned.
There were too many things happening at once. The Supre House said they would lend a hand if needed, but could they still do it now that they were facing an internal conflict?
Lauren thought about Amber. She didn’t know the woman personally, but she helped them get those confidential books from the Supre House. She even did not report the incident of Alec making a replica of himself to do the king’s duties. So far, the lady had not done anything unpleasant, so Lauren felt bad that all of Amber’s efforts to beco the future chief of the Supre House were now in vain.
"I always knew it was possible to happen," Alec said and gulped down the remaining blood wine in his glass. "In the face of power, most people tend to beco dirty players."
Vincent tossed the newsletter on the table. "What a big news," he snickered. "The great Lady Amber Hanley of Supre House has fallen."
"What will happen to her now?" Lauren asked.
"The fact that Lord Eleazar has hidden this fact and acknowledged Amber as his successor, for sure, angered the mbers. Those senior lords who are buying their ti to ruin the chief will surely take advantage of the situation. A Supre House trial will happen." Vincent traced the rim of his wineglass with his finger slowly, his eyes dark and mischievous. "One thing is certain. Amber is now ineligible for the chief’s position and everyone else will fight to have it."
"It ans a big storm is happening in the Supre House. The stability of the kingdoms will be affected, wars can happen," said Alec.
"So we cannot expect any help from the Supre House. Is that right?"
"They will be too busy fighting over who should be the next chief."
Great! Lauren blurted in her mind sarcastically. Of course she believed they could stand their ground when the rebels attacked. They had enough soldiers and Alec was a warlord himself. But at this point, they could not afford to waste a little help.
"What will happen to Lady Amber? I suppose she won’t receive any punishnt except for her disqualification as the chief’s successor?" The Supre House had its own set of laws. Lauren was not familiar with all of it.
"The trial will most likely turn against her favor despite her years of serving the Supre House. She wouldn’t be sentenced to death, but she can no longer work in the Supre House, even as just a mber," explained Vincent.
"Lord Eleazar, though, can be forced to step down. But those little idiots are insane to think they can easily overthrow that old man."
"Lord Eleazar is not the longest reigning Supre House chief for nothing. We’ll see how he handles this," said Alec before his eyes dropped to Lauren’s plate. "Start eating, Lauren," he demanded.
Lauren started eating despite her lack of appetite. Alec would only argue with her if she didn’t pay attention to her als. Her body was weak as it was, she needed every support she could get to extend her life.
After their dinner, Vincent told Alec about the missive he received from Acheron. King Sebastian had provided Anthony’s location. He also said that he sent a missive to the sage telling him that he was needed in Evardin.
Lauren was delighted by the news, and at the sa ti, bothered. The need to confirm her mother’s death made her uneasy. She guessed it was because of her fear that the outco would prove the woman right. Her mother loved her. She was a good person. Lauren clung to that belief.
"Did sothing happen?" Lauren woke up the next morning with Alec walking from the door in a hurry. She heard him talking to soone, and with the hard expression he had on his face, she assud sothing had happened.
"Deranged humans and black mages are attacking the town at the mont. They are in great numbers. From their clothing, it is assud they are villagers."
Lauren’s eyes widened.
"I have instructed Colton and Edith to lead the royal army in suppressing them," Alec said while he was buttoning his dress shirt. He slipped into his vest and pulled on his royal coat. "Matthias is at the door. He will guard you. I’m having a eting with the council."
"Okay, do what needs to be done. Don’t worry about ."
He kissed her temple and told her not to leave the castle before he left the bedroom.
Vincent was nowhere to be found when Lauren went down the dining hall. She assud the man was in the eting with Alec, so she did not ask Matthias.
The attack made her anxious. She knew things would go dire once the rebels made a move. And just like she expected, the people were their first target.
"His Majesty has instructed that you cannot leave the table unless you finish your breakfast, Queen Lauren," said Matthias from Lauren’s behind when she was about to leave the table after barely eating anything.
Lauren sighed and didn’t push it. Matthias was very loyal to his master so it was futile to go against Alec’s words. Besides, Alec was only thinking about what was best for her.
