Chapter 155: You Won’t Die

"If you believe your mother was a black mage when she gave birth to you, I think it is possible if she was from the first generation of black mages," Alec said which caught Lauren’s attention.

"But how is that possible? The first generation of black mages was from thousands of years ago, Alec."

The history books said that back in ti when the art of spells just erged and mages were still developing their spellcasting abilities, a priestess with divine powers had gone insane due to evil forces. She cursed a family of mages who beca the first black mages. Because they were turned by the curse and not by tapping forbidden spells, they didn’t run wild. Their heart didn’t stop beating as if they were normal mages, but the thirst for a human’s soul made them turn to the dark side.

"Nothing is impossible in our world. The books said that the first black mages, the Capewell family, are different from the black mages we know today. They are described as powerful beings who couldn’t be easily killed. Their existence was written in history books, but there was no information about how they died."

That was a farfetched thought... but how could she know the truth if she wouldn’t explore every potential cause of her problem?

Lauren looked down at the tea in front of her. It was now cold.

She took a deep breath. Her eyes remained on the tea.

"I guess what I told you was enough information to understand my situation. I would appreciate it if you would allow

to sort this out myself..."

Hearing this, Alec’s face turned grim and deadly. She saw at the corner of her eyes how he shot her a sharp look.

"We are sorting this out, Lauren," he corrected with his voice tinged with annoyance. "Together."

She t his gaze, now her eyes were almost bloodshot in frustration.

"I am dying!" she blurted out. "I am dying, Alec! Did you hear ?"

His lips parted and he looked at her as if he understood nothing from what she said.

"You should not waste your ti on a dying woman instead of running after the rebels. Every day our people fear that another deranged human might appear on the streets or in their hos. You must do your duty—"

"What the fuck did you just say?" His voice was so quiet, it sounded more threatening. "Why did you say that you are dying? Enlighten , Lauren."

Lauren was tongue-tied now. The sight of Alec’s bewildered and livid expression made her heart go frantic.

"Enlighten , I said," he repeated with emphasis on every word. His gray orbs were so dark they were almost pitch black, which made the dark red lining of his irises more prominent.

Lauren’s hands trembled under the table. Hot tears threatened her eyes as she spoke with a voice barely audible, "I said I am dying..."

Silence reigned between them for a mont before Alec spoke.

"And why would you die?"

"My heart is slowly dying... I can feel it. Every ti I am attacked by chest pains, it was like my heart is being clenched by a chain of thorns. I am managing by taking a strong dose of pacifiers every once a week, but my condition is progressing each day and I need to take sothing stronger to reign whatever illness this is."

"You are not a doctor. You cannot diagnose yourself and say that you are dying because you feel that way!"

"It is not just a simple assumption. I ca across a priestess so months ago. I visited a church on the outskirts of the town." Lauren did not go to et the priestess but she was surprised when the old woman suddenly spoke to her on her way out. "She told

I was dying because of an incurable illness tied to a curse... it was also one of the reasons why I ca up with all my assumptions."

She was dumbfounded when the priestess told her that. She ca back the next day with the hopes to be enlightened, but she was told by the vicar that the church had no priestess and the last one died years ago. He said that the priestess was nad Eleanor who held divine powers. When he showed her a portrait of her, Lauren was surprised to find that the priestess who talked to her the other day was long dead.

She believed it was the priestess’ soul who talked to her, and she wasn’t hallucinating. She heard priestesses with divine powers could still communicate with people in the living world even after death. It was the first ti she witnessed it with her own eyes.

"You won’t die," Alec’s firm voice sounded both like a demand and a promise. He was standing now and couldn’t contain his frustration, "Pacifiers are not ant to cure a person, Lauren. In any case, it must be one of the reasons why your condition is worsening. A lot of healer mages are out there. You can’t just give up on your life because a random priestess claid to foresee your future."

The tears dried in Lauren’s eyes before they could roll down her cheeks. She was mad at the situation. With Alec getting involved, his eyes were now on her condition instead of focusing on their kingdom’s problem. As the King, he should put the state’s best interest first before anything else.

"Are you suggesting that we et all those healer mages out there?" Lauren scoffed in disbelief. She shook her head, "My condition is related to black mages and you must not forget that I have an unusual ability, Alec. It was what stopped

from eting people who know better than

because the Supre House might know about my existence. I am capable of absorbing anyone’s life energy, may it be a human, a mage, a vampire, or a black mage. I am born with an evil force within ."

He cocked his head, standing in front of the window. With his back against the light, his face grew darker.

"If you are scared that those people we’ll et will spread a word about you, then let

take care of that. A dead man can no longer speak."

Lauren’s lips parted. "You cannot kill soone just for that matter!"

"You think I care about morals or the laws?" His eyes beca gentle as he leaned on the table and caressed her cheek softly, "I will even burn the world for you, Lauren."
