Chapter 195: Chapter Hundred And Ninety Five

Suzy’s heart leaped with a desperate hope, her mind a mixture of disbelief and elation. "Please let this be true, please let this be true," she whispered, her feet flying as she ran towards their bedchamber, the joyous cry echoing in her ears.

She reached the doorway and her breath hitched. Ryan was indeed awake, seated propped up against the pillows, Davis carefully holding a glass of water to his lips. His gaze t hers, a flicker of surprise and a soft warmth spreading across his pale face. A silent question seed to form in his eyes, "When did she co back?"

Without a word, Suzy rushed to the bedside and threw herself into his arms, hugging him tightly, burying her face in his chest. "Thank you," she sobbed. "Thank you for coming back to ."

Ryan grunted softly from the pressure on his injured waist. Suzy imdiately realized her mistake and tried to pull away, her face filled with remorse. "Oh, I’m so sorry," she apologized, her voice trembling. "I got carried away."

But Ryan, his arms weak but determined, pulled her back into his embrace, grunting slightly. "I think," he murmured, his voice a little strained but filled with affection, "I can endure this pain... I’ve faced worse."

He gently broke the hug, his hands reaching up to cup her face, his thumbs softly wiping away the tears that stread down her cheeks. "I missed you," he said, his voice low and husky, his eyes filled with love. "So much, Cassandra."

Suzy’s tears flowed even more freely now, tears of relief and overwhelming joy. She leaned into his touch, her hands reaching up to hold his. "I was scared, I thought I wouldn’t see you again."

"Don’t be. Where would I go when you are not with , My Duchess?" Ryan asked.

"Your hands are no longer cold," she whispered. "I missed your warm touch so much."

Doctor Abernathy cleared his throat softly, a gentle sound that broke the intensity of their reunion. "If I may, Your Grace," he asked, his voice respectful.

Suzy nodded, stepping back slightly to give the doctor space to examine Ryan. Abernathy moved with swift efficiency, checking Ryan’s pulse, his breathing, the dressing on his wound. He asked Ryan a few questions, his brow furrowed in concentration as he listened to the responses. Finally, he stepped back, a relieved smile spreading across his face. "Everything seems to be perfectly well, Your Grace," he announced, his voice filled with genuine relief. A collective sigh of relief filled the room, the heavy cloud of worry finally beginning to dissipate.

"You’re Grace," Dr Abernathy said, turning to face Suzy, " A mont, please."

She noddd then turned to Ryan and kissed his palm, her eyes filled with love and gratitude. "I’ll be back, my love," she murmured.

Ryan nodded weakly, a small, reassuring smile gracing his lips. Suzy stood up from the bed and followed Doctor Abernathy out of the room, leaving Ryan in the care of a relieved and happy Davis.

As She opened the bedchamber door, she caught a glimpse of several staff mbers hastily retreating down the hallway, their happy hushed whispers fading as they scurried away. It was obvious they were eavesdropping. A small smile touched her lips; she wasn’t surprised by their concern.

Doctor Abernathy, turning his attention back to Suzy, reiterated his instructions. "His Grace needs ample rest, Your Grace, and should abstain from anything that might cause him stress or agitation." He reached into his bag to retrieve the necessary dicines, intending to hand them to a nearby maid.

But Suzy gently took the vials and packets from him. "I will see to his dication myself, Doctor," she said, her voice firm but kind. "I will be in charge of his recovery."

The doctor smiled, a look of reassurance on his face. "An excellent decision, Your Grace," he said. "I will, of course, be back daily to monitor his progress."

"Thank you, Doctor," Suzy replied, her gratitude sincere. She then turned and called out softly, "Noah?"

Noah, who had been standing patiently just outside the door, stepped into the hallway. "Your Grace?"

"Please escort Doctor Abernathy out," Suzy requested. Noah nodded and followed the doctor down the hallway.

As the imdiate flurry of concern subsided and the staff dispersed, Davis stood in front of Ryan, a look of profound relief on his face. He was overjoyed that Ryan had regained consciousness.

However, Ryan’s expression had turned serious, his brow furrowed in thought. He looked at Davis. "How did Cassandra know what was happening, Davis?" he asked, his voice low and thoughtful.

Davis explained everything, recounting how Suzy had received his letter but had felt sothing was amiss and had decided to return to Carleton despite his reassurances. He ended with a heartfelt apology for his incompetence. "I am sorry, Your Grace. I was rely following your instructions, but I saw that it caused Her Grace great worry."

Ryan waved his hand dismissively. "Don’t fret, Davis," he said. "I knew Cassandra wouldn’t fall for sothing like that. She’s too smart, too perceptive. Her intuition is rarely wrong." He paused, his gaze hardening. "Where’s the body?"

"I had it moved, Your Grace," Davis replied. "It’s being kept secure, awaiting your orders."

Ryan’s brow furrowed further. "Sothing is amiss, Davis," he said, his voice troubled.

"How so, Your Grace?" Davis asked, his curiosity piqued.

"They were two," Ryan stated, his voice firm. "Two n attacked ."

Davis’s eyes widened in surprise. "Two n, Your Grace?"

"Yes," Ryan confird. "And I don’t believe they were working together. They both looked confused when they ca into the room, almost surprised to see each other."

"What else happened, Your Grace?" Davis pressed, eager for more details.

Ryan’s gaze beca distant, his mind replaying the chaotic monts of the attack. "I saw his eyes, Davis," he said, his voice low and filled with a chilling recognition. "It was that sa person who attacked the Duchess and

on our way to Carleton from our visit to the king. He was the one who stabbed . The other man didn’t have a chance; I shot him. And the one who stabbed ... he disappeared as quickly as he ca."

He looked at the dumbstruck Davis, his expression resolute. "Check for any clues on the corpse, Davis. Anything at all. And relay them to

imdiately."

"Consider it done, Your Grace," Davis replied, his mind already racing, piecing together the implications of Ryan’s words.
