Chapter 287: A Vampire’s Betrayal
The cold chains cut into Samantha’s wrist as she struggled to squeeze her hand free from their entrapnt, but no matter how hard she tried, her efforts turned out to be futile. Her powers were subdued by the enchanted restraint, leaving her utterly helpless, and presently, her brain found it difficult to process anything that wasn’t related to escaping.
Her eyes darted around the dimly lit room, and aside from the big bed at the corner, it was spacious and empty. Fear imdiately gripped her heart, fueled by the uncertainty of what those people plan on doing to her. The air was thick with an unsettling silence as she anxiously waited for answers, the predicant settling heavily on her shoulders.
In her mont of pondering, the heavy door suddenly groaned open, and when she lifted her head alarmingly to see who had walked in, her dark pupils dilated at the sight of a familiar vampire, and when he fully stepped into the room, Samantha imdiately rose to her feet.
"Alistair?" She called his na, the shock in her voice evident as she looked at the vampire, her stupefied gaze sweeping him from head to toe. Instantly, she felt a sense of relief surged through her nerves at the sight of him, that was the only feeling she could sense, there was no suspicion on her side, as she believed he was her salvation.
"Alistair!" She cried out, her voice echoing in the confined space as she hurried towards where he stood. There were tears in her eyes, as if she was going to burst any minute due to the emotions she had bottled in her heart, but when he smiled reassuringly at her, she couldn’t stop herself from asking, "did they take you in too? I’m so happy that you’re here! I was so terrified and confused that I was all by myself. I don’t know why I’m here, they kept saying things to
but– but we can escape! I know we can escape if we try! There’s a boat at the back leading to a shore, I know if we–"
"You know what, Samantha?" He inquired, his voice dripping with a calculated charm, whilst it stopped Samantha from speaking mid-sentence. Not minding the chains in her hand as she didn’t consider that as important, she used her two dainty hands to hold one of Alistair’s hand, whilst leading him towards the door.
"This isn’t the right ti for us to speak, we need to leave before soone cos. How did you find your way here? H– how did you know I was here?"
"None of that will matter, as you can’t leave." He added, making Samantha pause in her effortless drag, and when he had her attention, he said, "you can’t leave because I assisted them in bringing you here."
"What?" Confusion etched across her face, her hands recoiling subconsciously from his own, "what do you an you assisted them? This is no ti for jokes, Alistair! You’re saying this to frighten
and it’s not funny. You can do this when we’re safely back at the Palace but don’t joke about–"
Alistair suddenly chuckled darkly as he watched her try to make up excuses for his own sches, and there was a sinister undertone to his voice as he interrupted her, "you see, my dear sister-in-law, alliances tend to shift, blood ties an absolutely nothing in this grand sche and you know why, because with you out of the way, only then will I beco free of this chains I have to carry all my life, Samantha. Don’t you want
to experience a little happiness?"
"W– what are you saying to ?" Samantha felt a chill in the air that had nothing to do with the room’s temperature, the once-familiar face of Alistair now wore the mask of a betrayer, but even then, Samantha refused to accept it as the truth. She knew Alistair, he wasn’t that type of person who’d betray his family.
"You shouldn’t say such things, it’s starting to scare ." She held his hand, "we need to get out of here, please! We need to leave this place right now. Tell
you’re just ssing with , you ca to find
cause you knew I was here, didn’t you?" She implored, the tears in her eyes kept pooling, but Samantha could feel her soul leave her chest when Alistair rudely yanked his hand away from her own.
When his smile stretched a little, a darkness flickered in his eyes. Samantha’s hope began to wane when he spoke, his words sending shivers down her spine. "You are no longer connected to the Chevalier family. You belong to the Queen of the South now."
"Please don’t say things like that, why are you saying these things?" Samantha’s voice trembled, and the tears in her eyes slid down her face, his words were hurting her too much, like a knife stabbed to her back. "The Alistair I know would never say such a thing to . He considers
his sister, he cares for
like his own family, he wouldn’t let anyone hurt
unless you’re not Alistair."
"If it helps you accept your predicant then maybe I’m not Alistair." He faced the other side, turning his back at her. "Do you know why? I’m not Alistair because I am desperate to live without these chains on . I’m not Alistair because I’m desperate to have my Father look at
the way he looks at Tobias, and I’m not Alistair because I’m desperate to feel accepted. You went through that hell so you should understand what I’m going through myself, I’m facing it worse so don’t make this any more difficult."
"But this–" Samantha was almost paralyzed by shock, "why does it matter who accepts you and who doesn’t? You’re the one of the reasons behind what I’ve beco today. You’re one of the reasons behind Maurice’s success. Ivan sees you as his brother, you helped him during his struggles and was there for him when others weren’t. Tobias is the sa, so–"
"I’m always there for everyone aren’t I? But who’s there for ?" He laughed, and then scoffed in disdain, "no one understands my burden, I carry everyone’s ladder but mine is still dangling. My Father hates , I made one mistake, it was fatal, I know, but it was still a mistake, I went out of control and killed innocent lives, everyone thinks I’m a monster, but no one ever bothered to ask if I was traumatized by that incident, I was a fucking child! I got a scar on my face because of it and do you know what it ans? Do you know why the scar never heals? Have you ever witnessed a beast in torture? Only when you do can you understand what the scar on my face ans, okay?"
His crimson eyes were teary when he looked right into her eyes, and for a splitting mont, Samantha noticed a flash of red string in his crimson eyes, but it disappeared all too quickly just as it had appeared. The room that had seed oppressive now felt like a prison closing in on her, and she shook her head.
"No matter what you say to , you aren’t the Alistair I know." Samantha stuck to her words, unable to accept this, but his lips curled subtly at her defiance before disappearing like it was never there.
"Suit yourself. I never ca here to convince you otherwise. You needed an explanation, I gave you one. Have fun in your new realm." And he turned to leave, not for once sparing her a glance, as though she had beco invisible now that she knew his true allegiance.
Samantha watched him go, and she felt paralyzed at her spot, unable to move, and when the door closed shut, it felt like her soul had returned. Unable to comprehend what just happened, she sank to her knees on the floor and was unable to hold back the tears that escaped her eyes.
"What is happening?" She sobbed quietly, finding herself at the rcy of the forces beyond her understanding.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t all for the night as the door creaked open once more, but this ti, it revealed an unfamiliar being who stepped inside, and Samantha gasped in fright when he smirked her way.
