Chapter 231: No Big Deal

All in all, Emily’s situation, was not a big deal.

That whole thing of her having kissed Derek, and then running away like the hounds of hell were on her tail. Was not so bad once she sat down and thought about it. It really was not, it was not the end of the world. The earth had kept spinning afterwards, and the sky had not started raining down on her.

So what if she had kissed her boss?

It was not like she had ruined everything in her life ever. She still had options. Lots, and lots of options. Life was her oyster, or was it the whole world was her oyster.

The saying did not matter. What mattered was that Emily still had plenty of other things that she could do.

She could run away and beco a nun. Do away with all worldly things, and live a life full of faith and prayer. A life where she did not have to focus so much on material things like money. She could spend her days enjoying the simple things in life and becoming enlightened.

Closing her eyes, Emily clasped her hands together, trying to think of herself as a nun. Then she vigorously shook her head and forced her eyes open.

There was no way that she would make it in that life. She did not have the calmness that it required.

But still, even with her prospects as a nun looking bleak, she still had other options. She could head out to the countryside, maybe try her hand as a farr, or maybe bull riding would be more up her street.

Emily was shaking her head before the thought even ended. She did not have the strength for that, and she most definitely was not enough of an adrenalin junkie for riding.

A bull would snap her in half, and grind her bones to dust. She would not be able to cut it as a bull rider. Nor would she be able to handle all of the many responsibilities that ca with running a farm. There was just way too much work, and Emily had too much of the city in her to have any hope of adapting. She knew pigeons and giant rats, not cows and chickens. So the life of a farr was not it for her.

The only way that she could see herself on a farm was as a visitor. Just there to enjoy the beautiful sunsets, to stargaze, and maybe to take pictures with the animals and amongst the crops.

If she visited the farm in any other way other than that, she would be dead in a matter of hours. Hard labor just was not for her. With life as a nun and as a farr clearly not in the cards for her, Emily considered sothing else.

Perhaps she could beco a security guard. They worked nights, so that ant no sleeping on the job. So her lack of it when alone would co in handy. But then, Emily tried to picture herself using a nightstick. With her luck, she would end up hitting herself.

Instead of whoever it was that she was supposed to fight. And that was just thinking about the nightstick. What would she even do with a gun other than drop it in fear? Unable to think of any other jobs where she would have even the slightest chance of making it.

Waitressing was still a bit too raw for her after the whole thing with Bee’s diner.

Emily decided to just bite the bullet and head back into work.

In all of her ti at Haven Group, Emily had never once walked into the building without being excited to reach her office. But that day, she did not want the journey there to end.

As she walked up the stairs she made sure to go as slow as possible, knowing that she would get there eventually, but still wanting to delay nonetheless. When she finally did make it to the office, she was not shocked to find Derek there. After all, she must have taken it least.

fifteen minutes wasting ti on the stairs.

"Good morning Emily," He said. When she entered his office.

"Good morning Derek," She greeted and then she bit her bottom lip.

Rembering exactly where said lip had been earlier that morning. She instantly released it, looking at Derek, wide-eyed.

"Listen, Derek, about this morning, I—" He held up a hand, and Emily quietened so fast, her teeth actually clicked together.

"Do you have the report that I asked for yesterday ready?" He asked. And Emily found herself nodding.

What?! Were they not going to talk about this?

"I need to see it before I head to my first eting of the day," He continued.

Emily nodded, already turning, and leaving as she searched for the file.

Emily took the ti to gather herself. Right, Derek’s approach was best, as much as Emily was bothered by her sudden lapse in judgent earlier that morning. Work was not the place to talk about it. After all, they would be discussing sothing personal.

Sothing that should remain private. Just because they were in Derek’s office that did not an that things could not get out and be heard by others in the building. They had already slipped up a few tis by talking about their sleeping arrangent there.

But the issue with the kiss was sothing major, sothing that should remain a secret at all costs.

A line had been crossed.

and it was a big one. Silence was in her best interest and so Emily did what she and Derek often did when faced with uncomfortable situations. She buried it deep down and tried not to think about it.

After emailing Derek the file,

Emily pretended like nothing had happened. Like her lips were not still tingling. Like her heart did not skip a beat when she rembered just how it had felt to feel his lips move against hers.
