Chapter 192: Monday, Joke’s On You

On a regular week, Emily was part of that group of people who just woke up in the morning, and said "Mondays" and then proceeded to trudge their way through the rest of the day, not really enjoying it.

The only difference was that, for her, that did not just end with Mondays. For Emily, every single day had been a Monday.

The effects of having too little sleep, often aning that she was always in survival mode. Just trying her best to be a functional human being for a few hours and make it through the day so that she could suffer through the night, and then make it through yet another day.

That had been her entire routine. A boring day to day, with no end in sight. It had been a depressing one, but it had been her own. Sothing that she was used to. Sothing that she could deal with. But right now Emily had no idea how she had ever made it through the day feeling anything other than what she was feeling that Monday...which was fantastic.

The world was a whole lot brighter than Emily ever rembered it being. She humd as she walked, a bounce in her step that had never been there before. Even in the bus, she took ti to have small talk with her fellow passengers instead of just putting in her headphones and pretending like they did not exist.

By the ti she got to work, her good mood did not dissipate. Instead, it seed to grow even more, especially when Derek arrived. They had agreed to keep it professional.

What happened at the penthouse, stayed at the penthouse. It was not to be ntioned anywhere else, especially at work.

For the first ti, Emily was regretting that. She wanted nothing more than to take Derek by the hand. Drag him to so corner of the building, and then proceed to just spend an hour or two talking to him. The two of them having a very in-depth conversation about just how great it was that they had finally been able to sleep, like everybody else. It felt amazing and looking over at Derek.

Emily just knew that he too felt the sa way. They had agreed not to talk about it, but that did not an that they could not throw in, a few sleep jokes, here and there, that only the two of them got.

Both of them being so discreet with it, that even in a room full of people they were the only ones who understood the jokes. The whole thing was started by Derek. Then it quickly devolved into the two of them just spending the rest of the day throwing in sleep related jabs whenever they could.

"That is it for the day. Why don’t you ’sleep’ on the matter until next ti," Derek had said at the end of a eting, she’d had to hide a laugh by pretending to cough.

Later that day, Emily had gotten a chance to get back at him. Not one to be outdone, Emily made sure that her sleep joke was as pointed and as awful as his had been. After a particularly boring presentation, she leaned over and whispered to Derek

"That was a yawn worthy performance," The man had snorted at the horribleness of her joke and Emily had sat back with a straight face. It was a juvenile thing to do, trading such terrible jokes like that. But once it had begun, they could not seem to stop.

"Is this what you wanted

to write?" Emily had co to him with a report, and Derek had barely glanced at it. Then he had looked at her straight in the eye and said, "Put it to the side, I think I need to sleep on it before I make a decision,"

Emily had barely been able to keep it together. For that one, Emily had gotten back at Derek by calling his uncle and his PA Lucas dumb and slumber, after a run in with the toxic duo. Though to be fair, Emily had no idea which of them would be dumb and which would be slumber.

But it had not mattered. All that had mattered was that the horrible joke had gotten a smile out of Derek. And later on, when Emily had run into Lucas and he had made a comnt about her having stolen her shoes from the feet of a dead hippie.

Emily had decided then and there that the man was dumb.

So that ant that Derek’s uncle would be slumber. Which, upon further thinking, made a lot of sense.

To believe half the nonsense that Sebastian even believed about himself. Thinking that he was sohow God’s gift to the world. One had to be asleep. The version of himself that Sebastain Haven had, existed only in the dream world.

But even with the tiny blip of running into Lucas. Emily’s good mood still held for the rest of the day. It was as though sleep had given her a shield.

An impenetrable one that could not be pierced by anything, be it dumb fellow PAs, who were unbelievably petty, and were constanly trying to bring her down.

Or their equally annoying bosses who seed to switch between wanting to strangle her and pretending as though Emily did not exist. With the benefit of several nights of good rest behind her, Emily suddenly found everything to be just background chatter.

Nothing bothered her. She felt as though even if Haven Group headquarters were to sohow be torn in half by a lightning strike. Swift1y followed by a tornado tearing through the building, and scattering all of her paperwork. Followed by sobody just dumping an entire zoo smack dab in the middle of the ruined building. She would still be unbothered.

That was the type of high that she was on. She had never experienced such a feeling before, and she never ever wanted it to diminish. Emily sincerely hoped that even as ti wore on and she and Derek continued to sleep with one another.

The feeling never faded. That she always felt this great after so good sleep. The feeling was too wonderful for it to just be a one-ti thing. Feeling a bit sad that she would not be having it that night since Mondays were not counted in the schedule that they had decided upon.

Emily bid Derek goodbye when it ca ti for her to go ho. Her good mood dipping sowhat. But it picked up once again when she got ho and found her mother there. Without prompting, Emily imdiately rushed forward and enveloped the older woman, in a warm hug. "And what is this for?" Her mother asked, even though she was already returning the hug. And Emily, her face buried in the crook of her mother’s neck, did not reply.

The younger Molson just wanted to hold her mother without the exhaustion that always seed to cling to her being there. She wanted to know how it felt to just be able to enjoy her mother’s embrace without the near constant aches and pains that ca with getting too little sleep.

Her mother, upon realizing that no reply was coming. Chose instead to run her hands up and down Emily’s back. Offering comfort, even if she did not know what it was for. Emily smiled despite herself.

"I love you, Mom," She found herself saying, aning it with all of her heart.

"And I love you too, sweetheart," Her mom said.

lting further into the hug, Emily could not help but feel as though with Derek’s aid, her days of lying to her mother were drawing closer. Who knew, maybe the arrangent would sohow be a way to cure both of them and at so point in the future.

Emily would be able to just go to sleep without having to lie to her mother about anything.
