Chapter 154: Fruitful Failure

With Emily finally being back at Haven Group, and the two of them having decided that they were going to give this sleeping together thing a chance. Things should have just fallen into place on their own. After all, she and Derek had overco the biggest hurdles. But life did not work like that.

Their plan when it ca to going to sleep together had been sothing vague. Emily had thought that they would get a hotel sowhere, preferably so place where Derek was not so well known, or if he was insistent on them going places that had more than four stars attached to their na, then she could hide her face.

Hotel staff in such areas tended to rember faces, and if she went as herself, word that the CEO of Haven Group, and his PA had been seen entering a hotel room together would be the talk of the town in a matter of minutes. Instead of focusing on the technicalities of what could go wrong, Emily, had chosen to focus on the good stuff first.

The first thing to co to mind, had been how, that Monday, sothing wonderful had happened to Emily. She was able to return to Haven Group after thinking she would never set foot in the building again. And the second good thing had been one that she had never dread would be possible...a chance for her to be able to sleep withouy nightmares.

But as her first day back at Haven group had progressed, it had soon beco clear, that she would not be getting the second most important thing...sleep... any ti soon.

Instead what happened was that life interfered. They had almost made it to the end of Emily’s first day back when it happened. Emily was in Derek’s office giving him her report for the day when he got the call. He answered, not really paying attention. His eyes fixated on the docunt that she had just given him. But a few seconds into the phone call, he looked from the paper to her, his eyes wide. "Co again," He said.

And whoever was on the other end must have repeated themselves because Derek’s eyes widened even further. He listened for a few more minutes, nodding along, not interrupting, clearly interested in fully understanding whatever it was that was being said on the other end of the line. When the call finally ended, he put the phone down, and shifted all of his focus to her.

"You are not going to believe this," He said.

"What?" Emily asked.

"Rember that ti I spent suddenly just going cold turkey when it ca to visiting you at Bee’s? He asked. Emily nodded. How could she forget? She was the one who had wasted hours looking out the window waiting for him to show up.

Derek gave a disgruntled look, as though the absence had been hard on him too. He cleared his throat. "Well, one of the nights that I did not co, it was because I had to fly out of the city. One of our clients was being poached away by Olaf Group, and I had to get rid of them,"

"I also made an example out of them so that others did not follow suit,"

Oh, Emily had wondered about that. When she had checked, she had seen that one of the clients that Derek had personally signed was no longer part of the list. So that was what had happened. "Anyway, the call that I just got is a tip off, concerning Olaf Group. Apparently, the CEO has found himself in a bit of a situation. The man threw a wild party over the weekend and things went wrong. The drugs that he supplied for the party were laced, and there have been casualties," He said.

"How many," Emily asked, taking a seat. Initially she had stood because she had thought that they would be finishing up quickly, but clearly they were going to be there a while.

"So far there are ten dead bodies,"

"Ten!" Emily exclaid, leaning forward in her seat.

And though she felt bad for the lives lost, her brain was instantly pushing aside the emotional aspect. Instead she was focusing on the facts and figures.

The Olaf Group CEO was caught up in a scandal, and not just sothing that you could pay a few mbers of the press to keep under wraps. This was not sothing that the police could look the other way for. Ten dead bodies, that was a lot.

And while so scandals could be used to boost profits, those were things like affairs, and getting drunk and dancing on top of cars in public.

But dead bodies were never anything good. And it was not like the old days where successful companies could get away with building their empires over the bodies of the poor. Now such things had consequences.

There was no way that anyone would want to be associated with the na Olaf group now. The company’s clients would start fleeing soon, looking for greener pastures. And since Haven was not the only company out there, that ant that they would have to fight tooth and nail to make sure that they ca up on top in the bidding war that was most likely already brewing.

"What do we have to do?" Emily asked, her exhaustion pushed to the side as she stood up again, her back straight.

"Gather all of the heads of departnt, tell them it is an ergency. We have to prepare for an influx of clients and I want each and every single client that we manage to attract to feel as though they are the best of the best. They must see from our treatnt of them that if they sign with Haven Group they will be making the best choice possible for themselves."

Order received, Emily stood, she made her way to the door. Once there she turned back only once, "Derek, about that other thing..." She did not elaborate, but he already knew exactly what she was talking about. He looked at her, his eyes sad, his shoulders slumping slightly.

The two of them shared a conversation without words, and Emily understood.

This was work.

Work ca first. Whatever happened, the two of them had to make sure that they handled things at work before they could even think about tending to their own needs.

It was a truth that Emily saw as clear as day in Derek’s eyes, and she knew that her own must have held the sa understanding, because all he did was nod at her. And she gave him a sad smile. With that she opened the door and left. It seed that their sleeping plan would have to be postponed once again.
