Chapter 175:
Chapter 175 - An Expert in Dealing with the Heretics
With the sound of gunfire, the gray-robed nun was forcefully pushed back as if soone had shoved her from the front.
Rebecca was confident she had hit the opponent's vital point, but it was inevitable. If she hadn't fired first, the one lying down now would have been herself.
Today was overcast, and the village road was not illuminated by streetlights, but the nun had obviously seen her just now—either the other party had so kind of special ability, or they, like them, had used similar black magic or taken so kind of magic potion.
Other junior inquisitors also keenly caught the nun's recent movents and the weapon in her hand, imdiately returning fire while seeking cover.
the mont Rebecca's first shot hit, the man who looked like a priest suddenly grabbed the falling nun with a strength and reaction speed completely disproportionate to his age, using her as a shield in front of him. Consequently, the following four shots all hit the nun, and then the man forcefully pushed the nun away, and darting into the alley that he had just co from.
"Inquisition Bureau! Co out! Don't resist in vain!" Rebecca took cover near a low wall, pointing her gun at the alley entrance.
This sentence was routine procedure; from the nun's actions just now, she could feel that the other party was unlikely to surrender quietly.
However, the encirclent had already tightened. These fleeing mbers of the cult should be simultaneously pursued by both Victor's team and the group stationed at point C with Rebecca's team. And now, Rebecca had successfully blocked them at this alley entrance; it was only a matter of ti before they were surrounded from front and back.
Now Rebecca was sowhat grateful that the population of this village was not dense, and they had evacuated so of the villagers near the stakeout points in advance; otherwise, they would really have trouble fighting freely.
At this mont, she faintly heard a woman's voice from the opposite side: "[May you continue to walk in this world, as you did in life.]"
Rebecca imdiately recognized this sentence—it was a... spell, a necromantic spell!
The nun who had just been killed suddenly twitched, then began to climb up from the ground. Rebecca decisively switched to another gun in her hand and fired another shot at the corpse.
The body manipulated by necromancy suddenly collapsed like a puppet with its strings cut, struggling on the ground for a few monts before failing to get up.
"The enemy has a necromancer, switch to magic devouring bullets!" Rebecca commanded.
Typically, the standard equipnt for inquisitors consists of two guns: one loaded with regular bullets and the other loaded with what's known as "magic devouring bullets."
Magic devouring bullets can directly interrupt a spellcaster's casting and seal their magical power. When used against spellcasters, they can also have a certain degree of effect. Shooting at corpses, while not completely blocking the effects of necromancy, can still prevent the manipulation of the corpse by the caster.
The inquisitors calmly switched their guns, while the lookout and sniper, ard with a long-range rifle, quickly changed ammunition. The fact that the targets would use black magic was entirely within their expectations—rather, it was even better; they were experts in dealing with such opponents.
In terms of objective combat power, they were actually no match for the likes of grand witches or vampire princes who could take on hundreds at once.
Grand witches like Dailey, who's an S-class wanted criminal, could easily slaughter a militia unit of a hundred ard personnel with black magic alone. Even senior inquisitors, like Aiden Galord, would find it difficult to contend with such numbers of ard personnel.
However, fully ard senior inquisitors had the opportunity to exploit the weaknesses of black magic to defeat grand witches. Their skills and equipnt were specialized for dealing with such opponents. Rebecca alone could push Priscilla into a situation where she had to resort to her trump cards.
In the realm of mortals, there is often no absolute strength or weakness. By using strategy and exploiting weaknesses, this balance of power can often be overturned.
From the necromancy displayed by the enemy just now, the inquisitors also extracted an additional piece of information: the enemy, although capable of using necromancy, was not an expert in this field. Manipulating corpses is a basic form of necromancy. If it were a decent or sowhat skilled necromancer, they should be able to employ more efficient attack thods, such as "Spectre Roar" or "Corpse Explosion."
However, as the inquisitors switched their guns, the opposition also changed their strategy.
Suddenly, seven nuns erged from the alley, four wearing white robes and three wearing gray robes. They charged straight towards Rebecca's position, seemingly intent on breaking through forcibly before the reinforcents arrived to surround them.
Rebecca gasped and shouted, "Fire! Fire!"
The inquisitors imdiately opened fire, and the leading white-robed nun fell, and so the others. Rebecca rembered from the infiltrator's report that these white-robed nuns were responsible for the cult's usual "preaching activities" and were not combat personnel.
Surrounded by the Inquisition Bureau, these unard nuns willingly acted as human shields, displaying a resigned attitude towards death.
With the sacrifice of their companions, the gray-robed nuns behind them closed the distance and retaliated with flintlock guns and crossbows in the gaps between the inquisitors' shots.
Rebecca took cover behind the low wall to evade the gunfire, but another junior inquisitor was grazed by a bullet, and cursing in response.
Rebecca peeked out again and fired, taking down one of the gray-robed nuns, but as she saw them closing in, she realized they had underestimated the enemy.
Before the operation, they estimated that the number of people needed to maintain this cult stronghold should be between ten and twenty-five, with combat personnel numbering no more than fifteen. So, the forty-person team led by two senior inquisitors should have been more than enough.
However, from the looks of the current situation, the combat personnel within this fifteen... seed to be these fearless death warriors. Under the sa conditions, soldiers who fear death and those who do not can have a world of difference in combat effectiveness.
In her desperation, Rebecca quickly drew a few strokes on the low wall serving as cover and then cast the "Fogrise" black magic spell. She was fairly proficient with this spell, and the grayish-white fog quickly spread around them.
This magic simultaneously reduced the visibility for both sides, but Rebecca and the teammates she selected could still vaguely discern the outlines of people and buildings in the fog. However, the two enemy nuns could only see a vast expanse of white.
Learning advanced black magic not only requires talent but also consus a considerable amount of effort. In addition, the Inquisition Bureau itself does not particularly advocate the use of black magic, so most of these inquisitors only learn so simple and convenient black magic as combat tools, rather than frequently bombarding opponents with offensive magic like witches and necromancers.
Deprived of their visibility, the nuns fired wildly in the fog but couldn't find their targets.
To avoid exposing their positions with gunfire in the fog, Rebecca bent down from her cover, quickly drew her sword with as little noise as possible, stealthily approached one of the nuns, and then swiftly slashed open her throat, killing the enemy while preventing her from making any noise. Another inquisitor took the opportunity to finish off the remaining nun with a shotgun.
But before they could even breathe a sigh of relief for stopping the enemy's breakout, gunshots and screams suddenly erupted from the alley.
