Chapter 159: The suspect
The traffic outside the hospital had already backed up, horns blaring impatiently behind us.
For a mont, the noise blurred together—engines, shouting, cara shutters.
Then hospital security rushed in, forcing their way through the crowd.
The pressure around the car loosened slightly.
Jim seized the opening.
The car crept forward at first, inch by inch, before finally breaking free.
Then—he hit the accelerator.
The reporters scattered just enough to avoid being hit, their voices trailing behind us as we sped off.
No one actually dared to stop the car.
Third person POV
"Miss Kendra, I thought you said you’d arrange for
to leave the country. What’s happening now?"
Lucas Knight’s voice was low and tense as he spoke into the phone, pacing inside the cramped hideout.
On the other end, Kendra’s tone was strained.
"I’m trying. You have no idea how complicated things have beco on my side. Just stay hidden for now and avoid the police. I’ll figure sothing out."
"That’s what you’ve been saying for months!" Lucas snapped, his patience finally breaking. "Ever since that last attack on Alicia Sinclair, the police have been hunting
down!"
His voice dropped, edged with fear.
"I’m not going to jail for this. If Mr. Blackwood finds out I was behind the car incident—and that night attack on Alicia—you think he’ll let
off?"
"Shut up!" Kendra’s voice cut through sharply. "Just shut up!"
She lowered her voice, but the anger remained.
"You knew the risks from the beginning, you willingly took the money. No one forced you into this. Don’t start acting like this is all on ."
Lucas clenched his jaw,"you never ntioned that the woman was connected to Mr Blackwood.if I had known she was his wife then I would’ve never...."He was cut off abruptly.
Then he froze.
A faint sound echoed from outside.
Footsteps.
His grip tightened around the phone.
"...Miss Kendra," he said under his breath, eyes fixed on the door, "I think soone’s here. I’ll call you back."
"Wait—"
But he had already hung up.
Silence fell.
Lucas moved cautiously toward the door, each step asured. He reached it slowly and leaned in, peering through the gap—
BANG!
The door was kicked open.
"Police! Don’t move!"
Ard officers flooded in, guns raised.
"Put your hands up!"
"On your knees!"
Lucas’s heart slamd against his ribs. Instinctively, he turned, searching for an escape—
But there was nowhere to run.
The room was already surrounded.
His shoulders sagged.
Slowly... he raised his hands.
This ti, there was no escape.
And he knew Alexander would never let him off this ti.
Especially if the incident from three years ago was dug up.
Alicia’s POV
After we’d put so distance between us and the hospital, Alexander’s expression remained cold.
He didn’t say a word.
I quietly sat beside him, unable to stop thinking about the reporters.
Sothing didn’t add up.
When we arrived earlier, everything had been calm. And yet, in such a short ti, reporters had suddenly gathered as if they’d been tipped off.
Jim let out a quiet breath, the tension in the car easing only slightly.
A ssage chid from Alexander’s phone.
He took it out, glanced at the screen his expression hardened slightly, before he typed a brief reply and slipping it back into his pocket.
I looked at him.
"Everything alright?"
"Yeah," he replied, his gaze softening as it flickered yearstoward
for a mont before returning forward.
I didn’t press further.
A few minutes later, another notification sounded.
This ti, he didn’t even look.
I could guess who it was.
Most likely Kendra.
The car drove into the underground parking lot of Blackwood Dominion Enterprises and ca to a stop in front of the private elevator. Jane was already waiting, a file in hand.
"I have sothing to take care of," Alexander said suddenly. "You go up first."
My hand paused on the door handle.
"Oh."
I stepped out, closing the door behind .
Jane slid into the front passenger seat, and the car pulled away without another word.
I stood there for a mont, watching it disappear.
Sothing to take care of...
He was going back to the hospital, wasn’t he?
He couldn’t let her go.
And yet, he still chose to act as if nothing had changed in front of .
A faint, almost mocking smile touched my lips.
If that was the case...
why didn’t he just stay with her in the first place?
I calmly entered the elevator and headed to my office.
Once inside I took my phone and decided to check Twitter.
As expected, it didn’t take long for the footage of Alexander and
avoiding the reporters to surface online.
To the public, silence ant guilt. Avoidance ant weakness.
The backlash only intensified.
I scrolled through the comnts calmly, my expression unchanged, until I noticed a post from Ariana.
She had shared the video, captioning it:
"If you have a clear conscience, stay out of other people’s lives, morons."
Since the makeup incident, she had been openly supporting . It didn’t take long for netizens to connect the dots and realize she was close to .
Soon enough, the attacks shifted toward her.
But Ariana didn’t hold back.
She went straight into the comnt section, firing back at them one by one, as if she welcod the fight.
In the afternoon, I had a eting.
When it ended, I left the conference room with a file in hand and headed toward the CEO’s office.
"Director Alicia," a secretary called out. "Are you looking for CEO Blackwood?"
"I need his signature on sothing."
"CEO Blackwood isn’t in the office right now. If it’s not urgent, I can pass it to him for you."
I glanced at my watch.
4 p.m.
"Alright." I handed over the folder. "The client is pushing for this. I’ll need it back before the end of the day."
"Of course."
I returned to my office and continued working.
By the ti I looked up again, the workday was already over.
I checked WhatsApp.
Nothing.
I went back to the CEO’s office.
The sa secretary was still there.
"Has CEO Blackwood returned?"
She hesitated slightly, as if sensing sothing in my tone.
"No... he must be tied up with sothing important..."
Important.
I didn’t need to guess what that ant.
"Why don’t you try calling him?" she added gently.
I stepped aside and dialed his number.
The ringtone echoed.
Once. Twice. Again.
Until the line cut off on its own.
I let out a quiet scoff.
That was enough.
I decided to call it a day.
When I got to the garage, Jim was already waiting.
"Mr. Blackwood asked
to take you back to the villa," he said quickly.
I only nodded and got into the car.
If he didn’t want to be disturbed while he was with Lilian, so be it.
When we arrived at the villa, I freshened up and went straight to bed.
Not long after, my phone rang.
I opened my eyes and glanced at the screen.
In the darkness, the light was almost blinding.
His na was clear.
Alexander.
Without hesitation, I hung up.
Then powered off my phone.
All in one smooth motion.
