Chapter 47: Good Night, My Love
At the hospital, Spider’s fingers that were connected with a monitoring device and intravenous catheter flickered gently as he gradually regained consciousness.
Every part of his body was aching and his head kept throbbing with a terrible headache. Everywhere was quiet around him and he wondered if he was finally dead.
Stretching his sore body, he turned his head to examine his surroundings but he was too weak to open his eyes and complete the action. ’Where am I?’ he wondered, before drifting off into oblivion again.
Incidentally, the specially assigned nurse who had co around to check on him witnessed the slight movents and wasted no ti as she rushed out of the ward to find and inform the chief doctor whom Kathleen had instructed to report on his progress.
Together they went back to the ward and he checked his vitals again. "He has pulled through the crises and would be awake fully before the end of today. Did he say anything when he beca conscious?"
"No, his fingers only moved a little then he lost consciousness again."
"Good. Stay here and watch over him."
He proceeded to call Kathleen. "Dr Janice," he greeted as soon as he received a hello from Kathleen. "This is the chief surgeon from dstar hospital."
"I know," replied Kathleen. I saved your contact the last ti we t. Is there any developnt?" She yawned, stretching her long legs before her.
She had just returned from the outing she promised the children. They were eagerly waiting for her in the living room by the ti she ca back from the Hudson manor, although she wasn’t in the best of moods, she still kept her promise of taking them out to get the things they would be needing to start school the following day.
Throughout the visit to the mall, the children had been extrely energetic, dragging her to see every object they were interested in. At so point, she was caught up in their enthusiasm.
When they got ho, she was fatigued and was preparing to take a rest when the call from the doctor ca in.
"The man woke up briefly a few minutes ago, but has returned back to sleep," reported the doctor.
"Was he able to say sothing for that brief mont?"
"No, he didn’t but I believe when he wakes up, he should. I checked his vitals and he is stable."
"I’ll be on my way right away. I need to be there when he wakes again."
"You don’t have to be in a hurry, doctor. We will keep an eye on him and inform you as soon as he wakes up again."
He had heard the slight yawn from Kathleen previously and assud she should have been tired. From her voice he could also detect that she needed so rest.
Kathleen suppressed another yawn and agreed with the doctor’s arrangent. "I’ll have to trouble you then."
"It’s not a bother but rather a privilege doctor." He refuted.
What could be better than working for his idol. In fact those were the kind of troubles he would gladly embrace.
He suddenly rembered the discussion he had with Kathleen about Mrs Hudson, so he asked,
"How did it go with Old Mrs Hudson?"
At the ntion of Shawn’s grandma, a lovely blush crept over Kathleen’s cheeks as she recalled the kiss she shared with Shawn, or rather, the kiss Shawn forced on her before she parted ways with him. Yes, she convinced herself, it was forced on her as she wouldn’t take the initiative to kiss him under normal circumstances.
The chief surgeon on the other end thought she didn’t hear him clearly and was about repeating the question when Kathleen spoke up.
"It went well. Although her condition is terrible, she can still be saved." She took a sip from the water on her bedside table.
"From every indication, her symptoms point to multicentric castleman disease and I’ve arranged for a lymph nodes biopsy among other tests for her in order to confirm the particular type she might be suffering from.
"Multicentric castleman disease?" repeated the doctor from the other side of the phone.
"Yeah, it’s a rare condition that can be easily confused with other regular diseases that’s why it’s hard to diagnose and one might end up treating so other ailnt in the process," she explained patiently.
"That’s exactly what has been happening to us," affird the chief.
"When the results are out, we’ll comnce full treatnt, but for now, her condition will not relapse again," Kathleen assured.
The chief surgeon was again awed by her expertise, with just a single eting with old Mrs Hudson she was able to diagnose to a great extent her condition. What they’ve not been able to do for the past two years was about to be solved in less than a week.
He had heard of her unrivaled ability in dicine but witnessing it firsthand was sothing he couldn’t envisage, It still left him dazed.
"I’ll give whatever help I can offer to facilitate the process, just let
know what I need to do," he suggested excitedly.
"Ok doc." Kathleen said.
"Thanks Doctor, for this rare privilege to work with you. I sincerely appreciate it," Dr Sullivan hurried to say.
"That’s fine. I also want to thank you for the support. I hope to hear from you soon concerning the patient in your care. I’ll hang up for now, Doc.
"Of course. Goodbye, doc and please, do take so rest."
After the call ended, Kathleen went to freshen up before retiring for the night.
She just laid on her bed when a notification ca up on her phone.
She clicked it and saw it was from Shawn.
"Hope you arrived ho safely. Thank you for taking up Nana’s treatnt."
’It was the least I could do since she’s the only one who supported my marriage with you.’ Kathleen said to herself, however, she didn’t reply to Shawn’s ssage and was prepared to sleep when another ssage ca in again.
"I guess you must be sleeping already. Good night, my love."
Kathleen’s heart skipped a beat, and she had a smile on her face as she finally drifted off to sleep so minutes later.
