Chapter 408: I’m Not A Kidnapper!

The officers nodded and stepped further inside, beginning their search.

It wasn’t long before they found Steffan, who played his part convincingly, appearing slightly disoriented and detached.

The officers exchanged a knowing look with him before turning back to Dolly.

The one who had been speaking with Dolly, pulled out a picture of Steffan from his wallet and brandished it in front of Dolly.

"This picture perfectly matches this man. Do you mind explaining why he is in your house?"

"There’s nothing to explain," Dolly threw back, faking anger. "I told you he’s my husband. Right, sweetheart?" She said turning to Steffan for affirmation.

But surprisingly, Steffan looked more confused than he had been when he first woke up two months ago in the house.

"We understand that this man has lost his mory and doesn’t know what is happening around him," one of the other officers said, his gaze piercing into Dolly.

"And we also understand that you are a neurosurgeon. There is every likelihood that you’ve kept him here against his will, perhaps even hypnotizing him to believe that he’s your husband."

Dolly’s eyes widened in shock, but she quickly shook her head, her voice rising defensively. "That’s not true! Steffan and I are married. He’s my husband! We’ve been married for quite a while now and we were even expecting a baby," she cried out, her voice breaking in a sob.

Steffan couldn’t help but want to roll his eyes. She’s told the lie to the extent that it appears she also believes her own lie. What a shaless woman.

"I’m sure soone put you guys up for this, but whoever the person is, he or she is actually trying to break a loving and peaceful ho. I wonder who had such deep rooted hatred for ?"

She stopped suddenly and turned to Steffan in panic. "Could it be your uncle? He finally found us!" She said and broke into tears again.

’She wanted to lead the police on a wild goose chase or either get him to corroborate her story, but she was in for a shocker,’ Steffan sneered.

Two lines appeared in between Steffan’s brow as he stared at Dolly. "Do I have an uncle?" He suddenly asked, "and w-what did you say happened to our baby? Wait... w-we had a baby?" He asked still with that sa blank expression that made Dolly want to strangle him to death.

What was going on? Why did he choose today of all days to have a relapse? It’s been long he had one, and she thought he had co out of it... until now. What triggered it?

She rembered seeing him moving towards the bedroom. Did the aphrodisiac tamper with his brain instead of arousing him? Damn! She cursed inwardly.

"Darling, i got pregnant imdiately after our wedding but unfortunately, your uncle made

lose our baby..." she trailed off, still with the intention of giving the officers a false lead.

One of the officers raised an eyebrow. "When did you get married?" he asked, skeptically. "Can you produce the marriage license? And why aren’t there any wedding photos in the house?"

’Why were they not buying her story about Steffan’s phony uncle?’ She groaned inwardly.

When she saw that the officers were still staring at her waiting for her answer, she stamred, scrambling for an answer that wouldn’t dig her deeper into the hole she’d found herself in.

"It... it was a... yes, a private ceremony," she said, her voice faltering. "We wanted to keep things... low-key. And the license and photos... I, I an, it’s safely kept away so that my husband’s uncle will not find it and trace him down here. I told you he wants to kill him, rember?" she added desperately.

The officers remained unconvinced, their expressions hardening as they exchanged a glance among themselves. "We’ll need to verify that," one of them said firmly. "Until then, you’re coming with us for further questioning."

"What?!" Dolly’s facade of control crumbled as they grabbed her hands to cuff her.

"You can’t take

away. I’m saying the truth. I’m not a kidnapper!"

But no one paid her any heed. It was like she was speaking to the air.

Dolly’s face paled, her earlier confidence crumbling in an instant. She turned to Steffan, eyes wide and pleading, but he rely shrugged, feigning surprise.

"Steffan, tell them the truth! I’m your wife. You can’t let them take

away. Who will take care of you when I’m gone? Do sothing, Steffan!" she yelled frantically.

Steffan’s face hardened inexplicably. Those were the sa words Lauren had scread when those thugs sent by Dolly had beaten him up and taken Lauren away. Then he was helpless and couldn’t do anything apart from succumbing to the deadening headache that had assaulted him, but now, he can do sothing.

"I don’t think you are my wife," he said and turned away.

Dolly was stunned speechless. "What are you saying, darling? Of course I am your wife. Your Dolly. You can’t possibly forget that?" She argued but got no response from Steffan.

It suddenly occurred to her that sothing was not right, so as they dragged her out of the door, Dolly threw one last desperate look at Steffan and she instantly went limp.

Was it a smirk she just saw on Steffan’s face, just like the Steffan she had argued with in his office at the hospital before sending those things to attack them?

No! It’s not possible. Steffan had lost his mory when he woke up and didn’t even rember that they were friends in the past.

Whatever he knows now are things she had diligently made him believe.

Maybe it’s just a fignt of her imagination. She was not thinking straight. Yes, that’s it, she concluded.

He smiled with satisfaction as soon as he saw them bundle Dolly into the special vehicle they had co with and drive off.

"Mission accomplished. Now I can finally breathe so fresh air," Steffan bead and swiped his hands against each other.

His only regret was not asking for permission from those n to first make arrangents for so n to give Dolly the satisfaction she so desperately craved for in that damned bedroom.

"Tsk! She was so twisted that she went as far as trying to drug

with an aphrodisiac."

He was not going into that bedroom, not for anything in the world.

"Maybe I should just set the house of fire," he said and heard an all too familiar voice sound behind him.

"Really, brother? You hate her and this place that much?" Stanley said from the doorway.

Steffan swung around and saw his elder brother standing tall and intimidating in the doorway. He was finally seeing him live and direct. This was the most heart warming sight he had ever beheld in months and boy, was he happy to see him?

Without thinking twice he rushed over and clasped him in a bear hug. It was the longest they’ve ever held each other, Stefran realized when they finally separated.

"So how do you like my surprise? It ca sooner than you expected, right? Stanley asked.

"Your timing couldn’t have been more perfect," Steffan replied with a grateful smile.
