Chapter 708: Chapter 484: The Enemy of My Enemy is My Friend
Dim lighting, a lodious piano tune, the air carrying a peculiar scent.
There are a dozen rows of booths in the hall, yet only a few custors, empty and desolate... So this is what a coffeehouse is like.
The Binjiang people don’t really like drinking coffee, or to put it another way, they don’t have the habit of drinking it.
In fact, it’s not just coffee they don’t particularly enjoy; they hardly drink tea either. All the teahouses in Binjiang, including several districts and counties, might not even add up to the number in a single township across the river.
In the end, it’s still due to poverty. Everyone is busy making money to support their families—who has extra cash and leisure to drink tea or coffee?
Once people are poor, they tend to be uncouth.
Being uncouth leads to being looked down upon.
Thus, no matter how much the Binjiang people love and yearn for East Sea, though they started flocking there over a hundred years ago and have made significant contributions to its developnt, the East Sea people still derogatorily refer to them as "Gang Baining" (Jiangbei people).
Actually, it’s not just the East Sea people; those from Shuzhou, Dacang, and Zhangjia Port across the river call Binjiang people the sa...
However, at this mont, Li Guangming isn’t concerned about whether the people on the other side of the river look down on him, nor is he thinking about why the not-so-expensive coffee is so unpleasant to drink. Instead, he feels like hitting soone!
Half an hour ago, this bespectacled man in his late-twenties had unexpectedly approached him.
With his greasy hair and powder on his face, looking all sly, Li Guangming could tell he wasn’t a good egg; if not for worrying about disturbing the neighbors, he would never have agreed to co to such a place with him.
What’s more unexpected is that as soon as they sat down, this punk started talking about Salted Fish, strongly implying he intended to deal with Salted Fish and even expressing sympathy for Li Guangming’s ordeal.
Who the hell does he think he is? Does Li Guangming look like he needs his sympathy?
At first, Li Guangming simply wanted to leave and not communicate with him anymore, but then the guy actually claid he was going to report Salted Fish and it sounded like he had already taken action.
If the superiors were to believe him and investigate Salted Fish, then the leaders of Linghai would certainly suspect it was Li Guangming’s doing. Even if the Linghai leaders didn’t think that way, letting the superiors dig into it would still unearth a lot of trouble.
Trouble really does co knocking without leaving the house!
Li Guangming was seething with frustration, repressing the urge to beat him up and said calmly, "Boss Qiu, this is our first eting. We’ve never dealt with each other before. Isn’t it a bit presumptuous to talk about these matters?"
"Director Li, trust , I have no ill intentions. I am actually helping you let off so steam.
Qiu Xiaohua also struggles with the taste of coffee, just barely sipping it to look the part, then picked up a Zhonghua cigarette once again, speaking with enthusiasm: "There’s a saying that the enemy of my enemy is my friend. I believe we could beco good pals."
He must have watched too many Taiwanese movies, thinking ’the enemy of my enemy is my friend’ or so nonsense...
Li Guangming muttered to himself, then stood up and said, "If you’re not going to clarify things, we’ll leave it at that. Have you ever thought about what I used to do?"
"Director Li, don’t be hasty, let’s talk it over."
"Get to the point, I have other matters to attend to."
"Director Li, since we’re already talking about this, I won’t beat around the bush. That guy Han and his wife who works as the Port Director, they are troublemakers, always looking to make our lives difficult."
Li Guangming took a seat and asked, "What kind of business are you in?"
Qiu Xiaohua, eager to get things done so he could ask his uncle for money, spoke frankly, "We’re in the sand mining business. That bastard Han and his wife detained our boats and want to fine us. We don’t want to argue with them; whatever the amount they demand, we pay.
We paid the fines as demanded and even prepared a little ’appreciation’ for them. But they are ungrateful, taking things out of proportion. They even threaten us, saying they don’t want to see us mining sand on the river anymore, claiming they’ll catch us and fine us every ti they see us!"
So it turns out Salted Fish blocked their money route.
Li Guangming nodded and pressed further, "How did you find ?"
"We inquired around; lots of people know about your conflict with him."
"And how did you figure out I live in Dingxiang District?"
"I was in Sansing for so business and caught a cab there on my way back. The driver told
he once dropped soone off in the district where you live and saw you."
Sansing is known to have many unlicensed cabs. Those drivers nearly all know him. He didn’t expect they could be stumbled upon by those drivers.
It seems he’ll need to move, not just move but relocate away from Binjiang!
After a brief silence, Li Guangming asked, "What were you doing in Sansing?"
Qiu Xiaohua passed him a cigarette with a sheepish smile, saying, "As long as Han and his wife are in Sanhe, we can’t conduct our business in peace. To get them out, we can only resort to reporting them."
"Are you saying you ca to Sanhe to find ?"
"Director Li, you know him best, so we can only ask for your help."
"And you think I would help you with this?"
"Didn’t we just say that? The enemy of my enemy is a friend." Qiu Xiaohua glanced behind him and chuckled, "Director Li, don’t worry, if you’re willing to join us against Han, we won’t let your assistance be in vain."
Li Guangming asked with a smile, "What do you an by that?"
"Once we succeed, we’ll give you ten thousand. Consider it a token of appreciation."
"Han is currently a Director at the Developnt Zone Branch. Boss Qiu, do you think a police branch director is only worth ten thousand yuan?"
"I can’t decide on more; I’ll have to ask my uncle."
Li Guangming called a waiter over, asking for pen and paper, and had Qiu Xiaohua write down his contact information, then took it and stood up, "Boss Qiu, you go back and talk to your uncle first. I need so ti to think it over as well."
