Chapter 84: What We Lose (II)
I read the letter three tis. Each reading extracted a different layer.
First reading: political information. The engagent suspended. Embercrown under investigation. Valdrake neutral. Standard Ducal communication — strategic positioning communicated through formal correspondence.
Second reading: personal. "Your mother would have understood." A dead woman invoked — Cedric’s mother, who’d died when he was young, who was barely ntioned in the ga and completely absent from the estate. The Duke ntioning her ant sothing. Sothing that the compression couldn’t fully contain. The particular leakage of emotion that occurred when a man who’d spent forty years sealing himself addressed the one subject that the sealing couldn’t reach.
Third reading: the space between the lines. "I will not pretend that does not produce complex feelings." The closest thing to emotional honesty that Duke Cassius Valdrake had ever committed to paper. A man who couldn’t say "I’m proud" or "I’m jealous" or "I’m afraid" using the only vocabulary his training permitted: "complex feelings." Two words that contained forty years of a father’s compressed interior — the failure with Nihil, the desperation that produced the Bloodline Refinent, the sacrifice of Sera, the discovery that the son he’d underestimated had earned what the father couldn’t claim.
Complex feelings. The Ducal understatent of the century.

It was the least a father could do.
It was also the most this father had ever done.
I folded the letter. Placed it in my coat pocket, beside Sera’s drawing and Veylan’s seminar invitation and Elara’s pressed flower. The collection of things I carried — evidence of damage and evidence of healing, stored in the sa pocket, pressed against the sa heart.

"Here." I held out the new one.
He took it. Looked at it. Looked at . The green eyes processing sothing larger than a crystal exchange.
"You dropped the mask," he said.
"You noticed."
"Everyone noticed. The Valdrake heir sitting at breakfast with twelve people, including the Seraphel saintess, the Drakeveil heir, and a girl who appeared to materialize from thin air to eat invisible food."
"Nyx has particular dining habits."
"The villain of the academy is openly allied with every major political figure in the student body. The social implications alone—"
"Are intentional."
"Why?"
The question was honest. Aiden’s questions were always honest — the particular directness of soone who’d never learned to hide behind implication because hiding required believing that directness was a weakness.
"Because sothing is targeting the people I care about," I said. "And the only defense is making the connections visible enough that targeting them becos a public act rather than a private one."
"Sothing targeting them. Not soone."
"Not soone. Sothing structural. Environntal. The sa kind of thing that’s been making you stronger without your consent."
He flinched. Not visibly — Aiden’s physical control had improved along with his power. But through Void Sense, I caught the micro-reaction. The particular discomfort of soone who’d been given a gift they hadn’t asked for and was beginning to suspect the gift had a price.
"The power surge," he said. "You told
it was the world. That it was making

to be strong."
"Yes."
"And the sa story is targeting your friends because the story needs you to fail."
"Yes."
"That’s..." He struggled. Aiden Crest — honest, direct, morally uncomplicated — trying to process a concept that was fundantally incompatible with his worldview. A world that had a preference. A reality that played favorites. A story that treated people as functions rather than persons.
"That’s not fair," he said.
Two words. Three syllables. The simplest possible moral assessnt of the situation.
And the most accurate.
"No," I said. "It’s not."
"Then we change it."
No hesitation. No strategic calculation. No political analysis. A hero hearing that the world was unfair and responding with the only thing a hero’s heart could produce: the conviction that unfairness was a problem to be solved.

I don’t understand the ga knowledge or the Script chanics or why a sentient sword lives under your bed. But I understand unfairness. And I understand that the people around you are being targeted because they chose to stand with you."
He extended his hand. Not for a handshake — palm up. The formal vow. The sa gesture Lucien had made in the library. The gesture that said: I choose this. Freely. Without conditions.
"If the world wants to punish them for standing with you, then the world needs to know that I’m standing with you too. And the world can try to punish the protagonist for that."
The protagonist. Offering alliance to the villain. In open defiance of the narrative that had designed them as enemies.
"You understand what this ans," I said. "For the Script. For the story. The protagonist and the villain, allied. The narrative engine will—"
"The narrative engine can go to hell," Aiden said. With the particular finality of soone who’d been given power by a system he didn’t ask for and had decided that the system’s intentions didn’t override his own. "I was made stronger to fight you. I’m choosing to fight beside you instead. If the story doesn’t like it, the story can find another hero."
He turned. Walked toward the terraces’ edge. The Starfire signature burned — bright, hot, carrying the particular intensity of a protagonist who’d just committed treason against his own narrative.
"Crest."
He stopped.
"Welco to the team."
The smile was brief. Real. The expression of a hero who’d found sothing worth fighting for that wasn’t in the script.

"I’ll try."
"Try harder."
He left. The Starfire faded into the afternoon light.
I stood on the terraces. The crystal in my hand — the spent one, glowing purple with the hero’s excess energy. The physical proof that the universe had been arming Aiden Crest to destroy .

"But not like Aiden. The protagonist was unique — the narrative’s chosen agent. There’s no replacent. The Script will have to use blunter instrunts."

"Which ans visibility becos more important, not less."
"Which ans tomorrow, Aiden sits at the table."

The pen scratched. The tea cooled on the desk. The academy breathed its nightly rhythm.

"And the Duke ntions her. Repeatedly. As the one person who would have understood what you’re building."
"What are you saying?"
"I’m saying that a woman who doesn’t exist in the ga’s rendering of this world is being referenced by a Monarch-rank Void cultivator as soone who would have understood the particular kind of world-changing cooperation that your team is demonstrating. A woman who died when Cedric was young. A woman whose absence shaped the Duke’s trajectory."

The notebook opened to a fresh page. Ren’s pen wrote three words:
CEDRIC’S MOTHER — UNKNOWN.
Category D. Missing continent. The ga’s blindest spot.

The pen resud. The tea went cold. And in Room Seven, a scholar who’d been classified as invisible was pulling threads from a dead woman’s absence with the sa precision he’d used to design a sealing ritual from four-hundred-year-old texts.
Because the ga was wrong about a lot of things.
And the things it was wrongest about were always the ones that mattered most.
