Capítulo 1929: Chapter 1929: The Nightti Visitors
Xu Huo seed to finally react to the situation, “I forgot to bring it down when I went downstairs last night, and this morning I forgot about it. Can I go over and get it now?”
“No worries, I’ve kept it for you. You can just tell the Captain tomorrow. But I won’t be around tomorrow since I’m off, so I’m letting you know in advance.” Lin Guang told him about the two newcors today, “One is called Han Cong, the other Wang Kai. You and Han Cong will likely team up with ; it’s better to get familiar with each other in advance.”
Xu Huo ntioned the lost luggage incident, “Where should I go to find sothing like that?”
“Oh dear, why didn’t you say anything yesterday? Now, I’m afraid even the suitcase won’t be left.” Lin Guang quickly said, “Is there anything particularly valuable in your suitcase, like precious tals or items that could be channeled elsewhere? Clothes and shoes are generally not recoverable.”
“What does your suitcase look like? I’ll talk to the Captain to see if we can keep an eye out for you.”
Xu Huo roughly described it, with so regret, “Actually, there’s nothing too valuable inside, it’s just a pity to lose it.”
His wallet was “not lost,” so his identification and money were preserved, and the suitcase contained mostly clothes, which was expected.
Lin Guang assured him he would report this to the Captain but told him not to get his hopes up too much. Losing so clothes wasn’t a big deal; there were uniforms, and he could buy new ones after getting paid next month.
Xu Huo thanked him, and after hanging up, he saw a biscuit shop on the adjacent street. He went over to buy so cheap snacks to stave off hunger and asked the shop owner to change a large bill into smaller ones when he paid.
Ignoring the tail following him, he returned to his rental room, locked the door, and slept through the entire afternoon. He got up at dinner ti and, again, didn’t cook. With his keys in hand, he headed out.
After nightfall, the Western District began to buzz with activity. The unrelenting rain couldn’t quell their enthusiasm; most people didn’t use umbrellas, even though the rain was heavily polluted here.
Those unseen during the day now poured out — besides the night-ti business operators and night owls, so youths gathered in groups on the streets. Many rode modified vehicles, which couldn’t be considered flying devices but were much faster than regular bikes in Zone 014, with so recklessly riding through the streets.
The red and yellow lights intertwined on the wet streets. Xu Huo, holding his umbrella, planned to have his dinner at the small restaurant he visited during the day. But he barely took a few steps when a young woman he t earlier dashed out and nudged his umbrella away. She was the neighbor he saw during the day, pulling him towards the shop where she worked, offering him “discounts” and leaning on him.
Xu Huo awkwardly dodged and had no choice but to fold up his umbrella and hurry to the restaurant.
The restaurant owner served him the dishes and said quietly, “It’s best not to use an umbrella at night; it’s not convenient for seeing the road… Besides, you’re holding the Supervision Departnt’s umbrella.”
Xu Huo thanked him, but by then, a few youths with buzz cuts had already entered the shop. After ordering, they focused their eyes on Xu Huo at the next table.
The youths arrogantly chewed gum, exchanging glances. Soone was about to get up and walk towards Xu Huo.
At this mont, Xu Huo lifted his head and glanced at them.
The young man who had just stood up froze involuntarily, then sat back down with an unnatural expression.
His companions were baffled and prodded him with their eyes, but the young man glared at them fiercely and muttered, “Eat!”
Seemingly unaware of the potential trouble he narrowly avoided, Xu Huo finished his al and paid, then picked up his umbrella and headed ho.
In such a crowded and complex place, news travels fast. Having just moved in that morning and then flaunting the Supervision Departnt’s umbrella at night, many people already knew there was a new recruit from the Supervision Departnt living here.
The attention he garnered was far more complicated than it had been in the morning. Most people felt both resentful and fearful of the Supervision Departnt staff. As a result, most people on the road stepped aside for him, while so provocateurs pretended to be drunk and bumped into him or deliberately ca close to pickpocket him.
Xu Huo didn’t want to cause any trouble and quickened his pace back ho.
Chances were slim for a good night’s sleep, so late at night, he turned off the lights in his room, climbed out the back window, and entered a third-floor rental room. The tenant hadn’t returned, and the room was empty.
Soon, the first group of visitors ca to his room. They were angry at not finding anyone, smashed so furnishings, and left.
The second group ca next, bringing knives. They carefully checked the bathroom after seeing the ransacked room.
The third group that ca was the one Xu Huo was waiting for. One was a small-ti thief he t during the day. During his conversation with Lin Guang, this shifty-eyed man was boasting in a tavern across the street, bragging about having stolen several suitcases the previous night.
The description of the suitcase Xu Huo gave Lin Guang ca from this man.
After buying so dry food, the man followed him for a distance, confird his residence, and then left.
Sure enough, they paid a visit that night.
Xu Huo created a slight illusion so that the man ran into the wall, then used the hypnosis techniques he’d recently learned while the man was dazed. He implanted a vague impression, then asked about the general contents and handling of the suitcase before letting him go.
By morning, Xu Huo climbed back into his room through the back window, tidied up his items, and went off to work.
So early risers saw him co out and were quite surprised, but when Xu Huo greeted them, they dared not respond and quickly bowed their heads and hurried away.
Xu Huo took a ride to the Supervision Departnt. Captain Jiang saw him enter unhard and smiled, “Well done, let
introduce you to two new colleagues.”
Han Cong and Wang Kai – outwardly, they appeared no different from ordinary people and didn’t wear any props. After mutual introductions, Captain Jiang inford them that Han Cong and Xu Huo would join Lin Guang to form a patrol team under him, while Wang Kai would follow Bald Head and the others. Brother Bald Head Hao, Brother Da Hanliao, and Tall Li Song weren’t working today; other inspectors had co.
There were still quite a few people at the Supervision Departnt during the day. Xu Huo and the other two were newcors, and wouldn’t be patrolling today. Their main task was to familiarize themselves with the various processes of handling cases. Of course, the official process was provided; in practice, things weren’t that cumberso. As long as it wasn’t a major event, there wouldn’t be any after-action accountability.
However, what concerned the newcors most were the attacks on inspectors. After all, being new, they were also targets.
“I’ve read the files,” Han Cong said, “The ones attacked were always solitary inspectors. It seems the perpetrators have noticed this point. As long as we stick together, there shouldn’t be a problem.”
“I looked through the case resolution records for the past month,” Wang Kai spoke in a low voice, “Out of hundreds or even thousands of cases, not a single one was solved, and so many of our own died. I’m really worried we might end up dead without anyone ever knowing why!”
