Chapter 127: Chapter 14: Realization

As we entered the Caucasus Territory, the climate gradually ward considerably, prompting Kor to reminisce more about life in the Caucasus. Although his ti spent in the Caucasus wasn’t long, Kor found that deep in his heart, he had unconsciously started to regard the remote and desolate town of Ugru as his ho, a place that housed his very roots. Whether in Jazair or Versailles, on the road or upon waking from sleep, Kor often found himself imagining what the Caucasus might look like now, what Puber, Ilot, Hesse, and Baoling were doing, and if there had been any new changes in the Caucasus after his lengthy departure. This change in mindset surprised Kor himself.

A teor streaked across the dark sky, and Kor lay beside the campfire, gazing blankly at the horizon, the flickering flas casting rose-red hues on his pale face. Although there were now around a dozen households in Darman Pass, Kor didn’t want to stay with a farming family; he preferred to be out in the wilderness, enjoying the essence of his own territory. It allowed him to feel more at peace and reminded him of many things.

Following military tradition, Ilot assigned a squad of soldiers in groups of three to stand guard. The vague silhouettes of the Half-Beast soldiers could be seen lurking in the bushes, laid out in a triangular defense system that Ilot and Baoling had designed, perfectly suited for the march and rest of a small contingent. In reality, Half-Beasts weren’t suited for guard duty. Although their night vision was even better than that of Mortals, their thick nerves made them prone to overlooking various signs of an enemy’s approach. However, the newly recruited soldiers were almost exclusively Half-Beasts, and training them into scouts and archers was an exceptionally difficult task.

To compensate for the lack of archers, Baoling and Ilot ca up with an alternative: selecting a group of Half-Beast Warriors with good arm strength to serve as throwers, replacing the role of archers. This was an idea sparked by Baoling when he noticed the exceptional physical quality of the Half-Beasts, in conjunction with mories of the spontaneous strength displayed by the Beastman Army he had once faced in direct combat. Ard with ten short spears, each only one and a half ters long, and five small throwing axes, the newly-minted Half-Beast throwers brought lavish innovation. Before the enemy infantry could launch an attack on one’s own swordsn and spearn, these throwers could strike first. Although their effective range wasn’t as long as that of archers, their formidable attack power even surpassed that of archers. Both heavily armored infantry and cavalry would struggle to escape casualties under assault from these two types of throwing weapons. Of course, this required sufficient training for the throwers to achieve such proficiency.

Kor was fully inford of the various changes within his territory by Ilot, without any omission. The work enthusiasm of Puber and Neptune, as well as the training achievents of Hesse’s Old Chen, left Kor deeply moved. It seed that if one chose the right people and understood their thoughts and temperants, many seemingly inconspicuous individuals could exhibit unexpectedly remarkable abilities.

The large-scale establishnt of the guard also relieved Kor. This had been a constant worry for him; the influx of more than a hundred thousand people was bound to provoke many unforeseen conflicts, and when certain disputes escalated beyond resolution by other ans, it would be ti to display martial force. Especially in such remote and wild lands, where one couldn’t rely on others, it was imperative to establish an ard force utterly loyal to oneself.

It seed Puber also understood this point. However, a hundred n were far from sufficient. According to Kor’s plans, he intended to expand the guard to around five hundred n before the arrival of this group of immigrants. Although the current batch of Half-Beast Warriors might not be formidable enough in actual combat, their robust physiques and fierce countenances were enough to instill fear in the incoming immigrants—and often, fear served as one of the best foundations for establishing authority. Kor was resolute about recruiting another batch of Half-Beast soldiers once he returned. He wanted the immigrants to witness the formidable martial power of the Caucasus upon their arrival, to give them a sense of deterrence and awe. This would considerably benefit the implentation of his policies later on.

After that one nightmarish experience, Kor found that his Dark Magic Power had significantly increased. Especially the enigmatic Kennifer III, who had guided him in his nightmare on how to digest and absorb the Magic power stored in the Dark Magic Crystal left to him. Since then, Kor found it easier to absorb the Magic power from the crystal. He could clearly detect that each ti he carried the Magic Crystal close to him and ditated, the color of the crystal would change slightly. The originally dark surface of the crystal had beco gradually lighter, significantly clearer than when he first received it.

Kor could also distinctly sense the surge of Dark Magic force within his body, a feeling that sotis even scared him. He feared that upon having this power, which he hadn’t cultivated on his own and coupled with inheriting a substantial amount of magical mories from the emperor of the Dark Empire—including the spells of many high-level magic techniques—he would involuntarily cast these high-level spells when faced with danger and adversity. If the spells he cast exceeded his control over his own Magic Power, the powerful rebound could imdiately overwhelm his sanity.

To truly assimilate this magic power that wasn’t his own, there was no shortcut or trick; it could only be achieved through continuous ditation to improve his own ntal control, enabling him to truly harness and master this divine gift. This was akin to a poor man who had never seen the world suddenly possessing endless wealth but not knowing how to use it, while the chaotic temptations of the outside world were constantly luring him, potentially leading to his downfall. Only through continuous learning and adaptation could he gradually get accustod to this world and eventually fully integrate into it. Likewise, Kor could only genuinely make this magic power his own and truly incorporate it into his being by learning and cultivating until his ntal control reached a level that matched the Dark Magic power he possessed.

However, the excessively dense aura of Dark Magic also caused Kor great distress, as concealing such a powerful aura was quite challenging in his current state. Although he had exhausted all efforts to convert a portion of this Dark Magic into Elental Magic and even Divine Magic, hoping to strengthen these powers to conceal the overly distinct Dark aura, he had achieved so success. With the holy attributes of so magical instrunts, Kor even managed to deceive Mage Mundell during Duke Zellin’s banquet, but it seed the fellow called Rebry had so suspicions. Since Rebry didn’t point them out at the ti, it indicated that there was still room for negotiation. Other than implying that everything could be discussed after coming to the Caucasus Territory, Kor had made no promises to him.

The abundant surge of magic power within him let Kor truly experience the formidable strength of being a mage. An ultimate Fire Magic spell, “Fla Dragon Burning City,” Kor could cast it in just a few monts by silently reciting the spell, turning the ground within a thirty-foot radius into a sea of fire instantaneously. Fire Magic was the Elental Magic that Kor mastered most proficiently, likely due to his main association with Kennifer III’s expertise in Fire Elental Magic. Kor’s interest in Dark Magic also grew increasingly intense. Although Kennifer III seed to disdain Undead Magic, Kor, who learned by analogy, held even more interest in this seemingly gloomy and dirty offbeat magic than Dark Magic itself. In Kor’s eyes, only magic that could be fully utilized for one’s own benefit was truly useful. Any spell, no matter how dazzling or grand, was inferior to a useful small-scale Fireball technique if it couldn’t bring tangible benefits.

Seeing Kor lying on the grass in a trance, looking up at the sky, Ilot, who had been poking at the campfire, finally found a topic to discuss, “Boss, it seems like the aura of magic power on you has beco even stronger. I get the feeling that you’ve undergone so kind of change this past month. Could it be that you really are a magic genius, constantly improving your abilities every mont?”

“Ilot, there are no such things as geniuses in this world. Perhaps so people have better talents in certain areas, and if they can capitalize on their strengths and work harder to achieve sothing, then they beco what people consider geniuses,” Kor said with a faint smile, pulled back from his deep thoughts into reality. He could tell that his companion was sowhat vexed, probably unsatisfied with his own progress in improving martial techniques, which was why he made such a statent.

“But no matter how hard I try, this Fighting Qi always remains at the lowest level and can’t advance further. I’ve been training day and night for several months without any progress. Why don’t I get any rewards for my efforts? When I see those Thunderhorse Knights and those mysterious Fallen Knights, each one is several levels stronger than . Facing them, I’m afraid I would not stand a chance. They don’t seem much older than , so why can they reach such a realm?” Ilot gently pulled out the heavy sword from its sheath, tenderly stroking the blade with the fingertips of his left hand, his face filled with dejection.

“Ilot, although I’m not particularly interested in martial arts, I do know that besides diligent training, what’s important for improving martial skills is to comprehend the true essence of the Martial Dao. Only when you advance to a higher level of understanding of the Martial Dao can you break through the plateau in your usual practice and ascend to a higher level. And to grasp the true essence of each level of the Martial Dao, you need to search for that inspiration amidst continuous training and combat experience. That’s the true secret to pursuing the ultimate Martial Dao.” The words flowed unconsciously from Kor’s mouth along with his own thoughts. Kor himself had no idea how he could utter such words; it felt as if they had long been hidden in his brain. Kor knew it was the soul-branding technique from the fragnted mories of Kennifer III that had made an impact, and he could tell from Ilot’s shocked yet enlightened expression that his words had left a profound impact on his companion.
