Chapter 128: Chapter 124 Unknown Task 8
Since the bomb had been removed and it was determined to be a rather high-end prank, from the outside it looked like nothing had happened on campus. However, the number of onlookers kept increasing. Among these people, at least three-quarters had no idea what had actually transpired. They had just seen the multitude of police cars and people gathered at the campus entrance, and they approached out of curiosity, all the while eagerly awaiting so earth-shattering event to spice up their after-dinner conversations.
Chen Xiao and Bai Xiong climbed over a fence next to the main gate; they definitely didn’t want to leave through the main entrance. At this ti, anyone erging from the campus would inevitably beco the center of attention, not to ntion the tabloid reporters hiding in the crowd, who were like leeches you couldn’t shake off.
By midday, just as Chen Xiao had suggested, it was ti to grab so food to replenish their energy, draft their next plan of action, and, incidentally, alleviate the awkwardness of having discovered nothing.
Neither Chen Xiao nor Bai Xiong were particularly fussy about food… well, except for cake.
So, the two headed back to the fast food restaurant on the corner and ordered so food at random.
…
“Making such a big fuss and still coming up empty isn’t good,” Bai Xiong said in a subdued tone as he took a seat by the window.
Chen Xiao wasn’t wearing his mask just then, as he felt quite suffocated inside, and besides, he needed his mouth to eat, so he had taken it off. After listening to Bai Xiong, he helplessly shrugged his shoulders but said nothing. However, he understood that the tactic of “planting bombs” was definitely no longer viable, as the consequences would involve more than just a deduction from their bonus.
The first suspicious location had utterly failed to yield any clues, their battle plans were now restricted, and it seed that apart from “screening one place at a ti,” there was no better way to continue their search for C-207.
A mission with over 700 in starting funds was indeed proving to be difficult.
…
Just as this feeling of having gained nothing began to pervade,
“Your burger is ready!”
The voice of the server rang from the counter.
This being a fast-food restaurant, there was no “grandeur” service of bringing the prepared food to each diner’s table; instead, the staff just called out, and the custors had to fetch their own food. At that mont, there were only Chen Xiao and Bai Xiong in the shop, so the call was undoubtedly for them.
At the sound, Chen Xiao stood up and walked to the counter.
As for why he was the one going to fetch the food…because he was closer.
…
…
When he reached the counter, a tray with eight double-layered burgers was already prepared, one of which was ordered by Chen Xiao, and the rest… well… all for Bai Xiong… Although given his size, him eating that much wasn’t too hard to understand.
Chen Xiao glanced at the young server, winked, casually picked up the tray,
and turned, walking back to his seat by the window…
Suddenly, he abruptly twisted his face back towards the server, staring intently at him while simultaneously stretching his rather frightening lips.
“What do you think of my face….” he asked the server out of the blue.
“…” The server hesitated for a mont and did not answer the question.
Seeing the server’s reaction, Chen Xiao twisted back around. “Were you just scared?” he stood still, maintaining the uncomfortable expression as he asked.
The server seed confused by the question, hesitated again, but still did not speak, rely lowering his head slightly.
“Usually, at tis like this, a server, whether scared or not, would quickly respond with ‘No!’ wouldn’t they?” Chen Xiao said with a smile, still staring directly at him, as if he wasn’t planning to end this seemingly one-sided conversation.
The server lowered his head even further, scratching his head, giving off an impression of being laconic.
“As a server… hmm…” Chen Xiao started, then suddenly paused for a second…
Then he turned and walked back to his table.
…
Bai Xiong looked puzzled as Chen Xiao brought the food over… He had naturally heard and also seen Chen Xiao’s inexplicable behavior just now.
“What happened?” he asked.
Chen Xiao furrowed his brow and drew out a long “Hmm—” as if he was thinking about sothing, but then he shook his head.
“Nothing!” he said and started eating on his own.
…
“Munch munch”
“Clatter clatter”
The eating manner of the two was summarized with two sets of onomatopoeic words. During this ti, neither of them spoke a word, but Chen Xiao constantly looked as if he was lost in thought.
…
…
An hour earlier…
With a shout of “There’s a bomb!” panic spread as quickly as wildfire, with everyone screaming and rushing towards the building exits.
Among these people was Lin Fan, who while disguising himself as a panicked student, also watched wide-eyed as the normally gentle and soft-spoken young won, one after another, scread like they were slaughtering pigs, running faster than the gym teacher.
It turned out, everyone was pretending.
Soon, the police arrived, and the entire campus was locked down. Lin Fan, blending in with the crowd, noticed more and more onlookers gathering, and the atmosphere turned into a hazy state between chaos and confusion. He checked his watch, then turned and walked out of the crowd.
He knew that as the crowd of spectators grew, reporters would also start to arrive. In such a situation, staying there could likely invite unnecessary trouble. A reporter might see him, think he looked like a student, and co over to interview him, or start filming him indiscriminately.
So, he silently left and headed towards the quiet fast-food restaurant at the street corner.
To make ends et, Lin Fan worked two jobs, one of which was as a waiter at this fast-food restaurant. He worked two hours each at noon and evening, which was close to the school, the boss was nice, and it conveniently fitted his class schedule. Compared to the evening job as a “hotel doorman,” which involved dealing with people’s moods, he clearly preferred this one.
Just as he had ntioned before, it was deserted here, so right now, the store was definitely empty, not a single custor in sight. The boss was also stretching his neck, watching the increasing crowd outside.
When he saw Lin Fan push the door and enter, he was slightly startled, not expecting him to co to work under such circumstances. But then, rembering Lin Fan’s sowhat pitiful living situation, he understood.
“Is there really a bomb?” Uncle Boss’s eyes widened as he asked, his expression nearly as curious as that of the onlookers outside.
Lin Fan put on a scared face, “I don’t know, but the police have co, so maybe there is.”
“Oh…” the boss nodded, then began to ask Lin Fan question after question out of curiosity, and finally, realizing that Lin Fan was just as clueless, the boss turned his gaze back out the window—after all, such scenes straight out of a TV drama were not witnessed every day.
After satisfying the boss’s curiosity, Lin Fan changed into his uniform and stood behind the counter.
Outside, the crowd was bustling.
The fast-food restaurant was cold and deserted.
Just as he was thinking, “Probably no custors will co today either…”
…
…
Two odd-looking people, one tall and one short, pushed open the shop door.
