Chapter 201: Chapter 202 – Sowing Discord_1

Having said that, Muniang didn’t wait for Mrs. Chui to reply, and with a “whoosh” she stood up and went straight out. She had already endured a lot, but it was t with Mrs. Chui’s increasing audacity. Mrs. Lin was soft and easy to manipulate; did she really think they could both be easily bullied? She even had the nerve to target their household, what utter nonsense!

Qinghe felt awkward staying, so she followed Muniang out.

Mrs. Chui stared at Muniang’s retreating figure for a good while before she finally reacted. With a wail, she turned her anger towards Mrs. Lin: “How do you discipline your daughter? Look at her lack of respect for her elders. It’s true what they say, growing up in the countryside with no upbringing!”

Mrs. Lin was also protective of her daughter and grew angry when Mrs. Chui insulted Muniang. She retorted with a dark expression: “Who are you saying has no upbringing? Don’t I know what kind of person Muniang is?”

Seeing Mrs. Lin angry, Mrs. Chui quickly said, “I’m just feeling sorry for Yangzi. He’s never lived in wealth, and now that his sister has made so money, of course, he wants to live better, doesn’t he? But what did Muniang an by what she said? She obviously looks down on us. Yangzi is her elder after all, and for her to talk like this, how can we not be angry?”

Mrs. Chui was truly sly. Although Lin Yang hadn’t said a word when she had been speaking earlier, she now made it seem like Muniang had been targeting Lin Yang all along. She knew her own status in Mrs. Lin’s eyes wasn’t even worth one of Lin Yang’s fingers, so she used him as a shield for everything.

As Mrs. Chui spoke, she began pounding on the table and burst into tears: “We know your family has money now and looks down on us, seeing us poor relatives as an eyesore. Poor Yangzi used to always tell

how great his sister was and how much she doted on him. Now, facing reality, he’s forced to live at the rcy of others, subjected to disdain. So much for the deep bond between siblings—ha! Oh, my poor husband, why does he have to suffer like this? We’re disregarded by his niece, and even his sister doesn’t care about us anymore. There’s no justice in this world!”

Mrs. Chui’s lant made it seem as though she had suffered great injustice. During her tirade, she didn’t forget to signal Lin Yang to chi in, but he found it difficult to speak. She pinched his waist as a warning.

Lin Yang, afraid of Mrs. Chui, reluctantly spoke, “Sister, your family is at least living well. Our family is really short on money lately. Perhaps you could lend us so?”

Mrs. Chui gave him a fierce look and shrieked, “Siblings should not need to borrow from each other! Your family is doing so well now; it wouldn’t be right if you did less for your own brother. Is your sister that stingy? Even if she is, she wouldn’t be cruel to her own brother, would she? And about that room in the back courtyard, if her own brother wants to live there, could a sister really turn him away? That Qinghe, probably not a few months from giving birth, if there’s no room for her now, she could simply be kicked out after giving birth. How simple is that!”

These words were very aggressive. Even though Mrs. Lin had a gentle nature, she too was getting upset at this point. Mrs. Chui was blackmailing her; not providing money or a room ant being an to her? How had Mrs. Chui treated Mrs. Lin in the past?

Lin Yang tried to intercede several tis, but couldn’t win against Mrs. Chui, his face flushing with embarrassnt.

Mrs. Lin pressed her lips together, looking quite upset, and said, “The head of the household is Muniang. If she’s unwilling, there’s nothing I can do. This house, the Silver Coin, they were all earned and provided by Muniang’s efforts. I don’t have the right to interfere. Your family isn’t without a house either; you have a tiled house in town and a shop that makes money. It’s not as if you’re lacking anything, so it’s best not to co over anymore.”

Mrs. Chui cried out, “What?! So Qiao Muniang, even if she manages the household, can she overrule you? Our filial piety is of utmost importance. You should look after your own brother; can she really say no to that? I’ll tell you, it’s because you spoil her too much on a daily basis. Just look at her temper. It’s no surprise, given her father died early, and you, being kind-hearted, must have been reluctant to discipline her. If there were a father in the house to control her, she wouldn’t have turned out like this—so hot-tempered, so wild. No wonder her husband ran off. Who would want a wife like that!”

Mrs. Chui’s words beca increasingly rude, and Mrs. Lin’s face flushed with anger as she shouted, “What are you talking about? When did my daughter get dumped by a man? Muniang is fine. When is it your turn to talk about her? You should take care of yourself!”

Mrs. Chui sneered in her heart, hmm, everyone in the village knows her daughter’s man has run off, yet she still pretends, isn’t it just because she’s embarrassed, if she’s afraid of losing face, then she shouldn’t act like such a shrew. Now that she’s been dumped by a man, it’s what she deserves!

But suddenly, Mrs. Chui thought of sothing. Her eyes darted around, then lit up, obviously having co up with so good idea, and the little abacus in her heart began to click away.

Seeing Mrs. Lin genuinely getting angry, Lin Yang quickly tried to soothe her, “Sister, my wife just spoke without thinking. She’s always like this, don’t take it to heart.”

Mrs. Lin, who couldn’t walk far and seldom left the house, would only wander around nearby when she had a bit of energy. Their ho was out of the way, and most villagers lived on the east side, so she rarely interacted with outsiders.

She had no idea that Muniang was being talked about like this in the village. The thought of it made her heart ache. Everyone else criticized her daughter for being fierce and deserving to be dumped by a man, but only Mrs. Lin knew the hardship Muniang faced in supporting the family all by herself. Who wouldn’t want to live quietly as a lady? But with the family being poor and constantly bullied, could Muniang manage without being fierce?

The daughter had developed such a temperant entirely for the sake of the family, to protect her, and now she had to endure such a reputation, all the while keeping it from her mother to spare her feelings. Thinking of Muniang, Mrs. Lin felt a pang in her heart.

Mrs. Lin’s own mood was now poor as well, so she decided to put an end to the conversation, “Finish your al and leave. It’s unsafe to walk at night if it gets too late. No matter what others say, I know my own daughter the best. I don’t need your gossip. As for the affairs of this house, don’t even think about it. As long as Muniang disagrees, I will definitely not consent.”

With that said, she turned and left.

Lin Yang wanted to follow her but was stopped by Mrs. Chui, “Why chase after her? Didn’t you see she made herself clear? You’ll just embarrass yourself; she already thinks you’re shaless!”

Lin Yang thought to himself: She’s already deed you shaless.

But with Mrs. Chui glaring at him, he didn’t dare to make a sound and stayed put obediently. Although he genuinely cared for Mrs. Lin, just as Muniang suspected, under Mrs. Chui’s influence, that little bit of familial affection was good for nothing.

Mrs. Chui let out a cold snort, “Fine, we won’t stay. Who cares?” While talking, her eyes still roved greedily over the various furnishings in the room, wondering if she could get away with swiping a few items to take back with her.
