Chapter 440: Chapter 435 Jumped off the Building
The next morning, Gao Jie was awakened from her sleep by her mother.
“Jie Jie, wake up, Du Fei jumped off a building…”
What?
Gao Jie’s eyes shot open as she was jolted awake, and she abruptly sat up, asking her mother, “What did you just say?”
“My colleague called and said they summoned an ambulance at one in the morning. She jumped from the sixth floor, and they’re still trying to save her in the hospital. She’s not out of danger yet.”
Gao Jie stared blankly at her mother, “Why would she jump off a building?”
“How would I know? I was just about to ask you. Didn’t she have any romantic problems? After all, Du Fei is pretty…”
“I’ve stopped associating with her a long ti ago, and even if she had any romantic problems, I wouldn’t know about it.”
Gao Jie’s mother sighed, “No matter what, one shouldn’t take their life so lightly. Your Aunt Peng and her husband only have this one child… Get up quickly, and co to the hospital with .”
Gao Jie’s mother had originally been a midwifery nurse, but later, through self-study, she beca a midwifery doctor, accumulating many years of experience in the hospital.
“I’d rather not go. You can just fill
in when you co back.”
Gao Jie’s mother was taken aback, “What’s going on with you and Du Fei? Weren’t you two on good terms before?”
“That was in the past. Ever since I discovered her true face, I’ve cut off contact with her.”
“True face? What true face?”
Gao Jie hesitated, then decided to tell the truth, “Do you know Aunt Peng always compared her with ?”
“I knew it when you two were in elentary school, and I even advised her against it, saying that every child is different and it’s best not to compare them. But I wasn’t very clear about it afterward because Aunt Peng only ever talked about your grades and nothing else.”
The main issue was that everyone had their own business to attend to, and no one had the ti to keep up with her little sches.
Gao Jie curled her lips, “Both mother and daughter are sick.”
“How can you speak like that? Aunt Peng is your mother’s classmate and an elder.”
“Fine, fine, elder, got it. Anyway, Aunt Peng looked down on Du Fei for not being as good as
in studies, which bred jealousy in Du Fei’s heart. Eventually, she even took my… and in front of other classmates incited problems. In short, she was annoyed with . How she appeared to be friendly and like , that was all fake, all an act. So, after being exposed, we just severed ties completely.”
“Acting?” Gao Jie’s mother looked utterly baffled.
Gao Jie nodded, “Yes, so now, even though she’s in trouble, I don’t need to visit her. After all, her troubles have nothing to do with
anymore.”
Gao Jie’s mother thought it made sense and stood up to tell her daughter, “Then you continue sleeping, I’ll go check the hospital. Oh, and don’t set the air conditioning so low. Aren’t you cold?”
Her mother left hurriedly, and Gao Jie couldn’t go back to sleep.
About Du Fei jumping off a building, it was impossible to say she felt nothing.
The two grew up together from childhood and used to be such good friends that they would hold hands when going out shopping, and although there were so insincerities, her feelings were real.
She was a bit puzzled. Hadn’t they just been playing with Ren Li and the others last night? How could she suddenly decide to jump off a building?
She rembered that around nine o’clock the previous evening, her mother received a call from Aunt Peng, asking if she was at ho.
Her mother said she was, that she had gone out to watch a movie with classmates in the afternoon and had co back a little after eight.
At that ti, Gao Jie was quite nervous, afraid that Aunt Peng would bring up Dai Lei with her mother. She had even prepared how to respond, but as it turned out, the conversation turned to another classmate who had divorced and they talked for half an hour before hanging up.
They didn’t ntion a word about her and Dai Lei.
Beyond that, Gao Jie recalled those sarcastic clowns in the class group chat from last night online…
Because she and Dai Lei had left without saying goodbye to that bunch, after arriving ho, she saw two of them saying that just because soone has good grades doesn’t an they are great, that they are too proud, looking down on ordinary classmates.
This group included all the classes of their year, created by Ren Li, and for a good reason. After the classes were divided, many had been classmates with each other. Even if they weren’t in the sa class, everyone belonged to the sa cohort and knew each other, which made the group feel more intimate.
The closeness wasn’t evident, but there certainly was no shortage of issues.
However, Gao Jie acted like an invisible person within this group, barely speaking up. So when the others were buzzing with activity, she stayed silent.
But now…
After so thought, Gao Jie pushed the quilt aside, got up, went to her desk, turned on her computer, logged into her QQ account, and entered the class chat group.
She didn’t type a word for a long while; when it ca to matters of life and death, such things shouldn’t be said carelessly.
It wasn’t long before her mom called, “Du Fei has been rescued. Thankfully, there are several large pine trees below her apartnt. She fell onto the pine trees first before landing on the grass below. If it were concrete, she probably wouldn’t have made it to the hospital alive.”
The worry that Gao Jie had been carrying lifted.
After so more thought, she picked up her phone and called Dai Lei. As she waited for the call to connect, she rembered the text ssage he sent last night, and her face flushed red.
This guy, he really wasn’t as honest as he seed.
Using her roommate’s words, he was the ‘silently randy’ type.
No sooner had this thought appeared in her mind than the call connected on the other side.
“Hello?”
Gao Jie cleared her throat, “Um, I heard sothing, Du Fei attempted to jump from her building last night.”
“…Why?”
“I don’t know.”
“What about now?”
“She’s been rescued. My mom said, she’s not in great danger.”
Then she heard a slightly familiar teasing voice, “Tsk, calling
so early in the morning, still dare to say you weren’t intimate last night?”
Gao Jie got so scared she promptly hung up the phone.
On the other end, Dai Lei put his phone back on the table with resignation, got up to put on his boxers, and turned to Ji Bin, who was still in bed, “Gao Jie said Du Fei attempted suicide last night.”
“What?”
Ji Bin startled, “Just beca official with Ren Li and then she attempts suicide? Could it be… that Ren Li did sothing to her?”
Dai Lei paused. It had been two years since graduation, and even though he was still on campus, having spent so much ti with Jiang Yan and the second brother in the repair shop, it wasn’t just the jaw-dropping gossip in the neighborhood—he had co to realize even the relationship between Old Li and his son was an imnse test of human nature.
What his brother suggested wasn’t impossible.
But this was no small matter and shouldn’t be speculated about carelessly.
He cautioned Ji Bin, “Just keep this conversation between us. Don’t tell anyone else; we have to be careful not to cause trouble.”
Ji Bin knew what was appropriate. Besides, it had nothing to do with them.
After breakfast, the brothers set off for their grandma’s house in the suburbs. Along the way, bored, Ji Bin logged into his QQ account on his phone.
As soon as he logged in, his phone wouldn’t stop pinging with ssages from the group and private ssages.
“Eh? What’s going on today that so many people are looking for ?”
Ji Bin muttered to himself and casually opened a ssage from a classmate he was on good terms with: “Bro Ji, sothing big happened. I heard our classmate Du Fei jumped from a building. Zhao Jingjing said that Du Fei was down last night when they were singing together, and hinted that she encountered your brother and Gao Jie before that. What? Did Dai Lei have a thing with Du Fei?”
Ji Bin: “???”
