288: Chapter 288: Elder Wu cos knocking, Ruanruan is provoked 288: Chapter 288: Elder Wu cos knocking, Ruanruan is provoked Having spent so many years in the power and privilege filled Capital City, where he was treated as a nouveau riche, ridiculed and made fun of, Rong Jing had experienced many hardships.

Fortunately, he learnt how to adapt by speaking wisely and behaving appropriately to different people.

This gradually improved his situation in these circles.

Now that his father has revealed a connection between their family and the esteed Rong Family, his emotions are a rollercoaster of thrill and excitent.

Rong Changting rubbed his forehead.

With a voice tinged with exhaustion, he said, “It’s not that simple.”

“Are there hidden circumstances?”

Curiosity surfaced in Qin Ruan’s mind.

Rong Changting started to explain, “Our branch of the family moved to the south during my grandfather’s ti, marking us as a separated unit.

Despite being a part of the Rong family lineage, we haven’t made it to the family records in all these years.

The gap between the main family and the branch families is significant.

However, as we bear the Rong bloodline, if the Rong Family ever calls for us, we must return.

This is our inherited duty.

About a decade ago, the main branch extended an olive branch to us.

I brought my family to Capital City and we’ve managed to survive rather well over these years; this was all due to the support of the main family.”

The words of Rong Changting amused Qin Ruan: “A call you must heed?

What could the Rong Family possibly be planning?”

“No, it’s not that.”

Rong Changting, with a sowhat embarrassed expression, explained, “A little over ten years ago, although the main branch of our family appeared to be prosperous, they were essentially just an empty shell.

Most of the active mbers of the main branch were in low-ranking governnt positions, making our family the worst off among the great aristocratic families.

None of the main branch mbers had ventured into the profitable world of business.

They barely made a difference in the Cabinet, holding almost no sway.

To put it bluntly, back then the Rong Family was in an embarrassing financial position.

They had no authority, no money.

At that ti, I was doing a little business in the south.

When I caught wind of the olive branch the main branch was extending to lower families, I took the opportunity to get to Capital City ahead of others, I provided them with money, they provided with opportunities.

Over a decade has passed, and we’ve been living in peace.”

Qin Ruan was shocked by what he had revealed.

It turns out even among the six great aristocratic families, there are families that are struggling to get by…

and struggling quite badly.

They were in such a dire situation that they relied on the support of the branch families.

However, on further thought, the relationship was more mutual than she initially considered.

“So, you had to take on quite a burden,” comnted Qin Ruan dryly.

She had never interacted with any aristocratic family before, and of the four big families, she was only acquainted with the main residence of the Huo Family.

As for the core inner workings of the Huo Family, she had no chance of getting close– she knew her place, not interfering with what didn’t concern her.

But for the Rong Family to be doing so poorly, this was an eye-opener for Qin Ruan.

Seeing the sympathy and complexity in Qin Ruan’s eyes, a touch of humor flashed across Rong Changting’s pale face.

“Everything I ntioned took place more than a decade ago.

At that ti, the entire world was experiencing a financial crisis and the Rong Family was one of the most affected.

After these many years, the main branch has already recovered.”

“Is that so?”

Qin Ruan couldn’t bring back mories from a decade ago.

At that ti, when she was eight or nine years old, a financial crisis wouldn’t an much to her.

Back then in West City, her daily worries revolved around filling her stomach while avoiding the wandering rogues and the perverse gazes that pursued her.

In fact, every passing day was brimming with fear.

She had no ti to think about a financial crisis.

Suddenly, a strange wind blew within the room, bringing with it a horrendous sll.

Qin Ruan covered her nose and mouth, her eyebrows knit in disgust.

In her mind, it’s clear that the perpetrator is making their move.

However, it was happening sooner than she expected.

“Where is this wind coming from?”

Rong Jing, being the less alard one, thought that it was just an open window.

He turned to look at the balcony.

“Don’t go over there!” Shouted Qin Ruan in an attempt to stop him.

Seemingly too late, he was already near the balcony– just a few steps away.

Inch by inch, Qin Ruan saw him standing at the window, frozen with terror.

Rong Jing stared blankly at the creature plastered against the window with its bloody eyes and its face distorted into a grueso expression, managing to stay petrified still.

The blood-red eyes staring at him were clearly not human- they were eerie, suffused with an intense and evil Qi.

He could clearly see the minutest of movents in the creature’s blood-red eyes.

The monster’s pulsating facial flesh was terrifying and the cold fear that flooded his body was enough to send shivers down to his core.

If Rong Jing were to need the bathroom at this mont, he would undoubtedly have wet his pants in fright.

His whole body was trembling, his eyes filled with horror as he stared back at the creature on the other side of the window.

His heart felt like it was on the verge of eruption but his body was completely unresponsive– he couldn’t move.

Qin Ruan also caught sight of the creature outside the window, a hideous, supernaturally evil entity, frail like a child, with no covering for its distorted features.

It was truly a sight to behold.

All its facial features seed to have been stitched together— a pointy mouth, upturned nose, eyes as sharp as an eagle, and deford ears, a sight enough to make soone nauseous.

Most unprecedented, it was skinless.

Its body, bare and bloody, and its decaying flesh in the open air was indeed sickening.

Without a layer of skin to cover it, one could clearly see the flesh on its body pulsating.

This sight was enough to make one look away after a single glance.

“ROARRR!!”

The supernatural entity stuck onto the window suddenly opened its mouth, revealing several rows of sharp teeth.

Compared to the tiny teeth of a person-eating snake, this by far surpassed it in terms of horror.

Rong Jing was so frightened that he fell on his buttocks, with a soft mutter, “Help……”

Experiencing the sensation of being on the brink of death once again, feelings of despair and danger wrapped around him.

He didn’t want to die.

He wanted to stay alive.

“Help!

Help !!!”

Rong Jing finally found his voice and scread for help.

The supernatural entity at the window moved away from Rong Jing, refocusing instead on Qin Ruan.

It was surrounded by an evil Qi that almost concealed its physical form.

Qin Ruan swiftly walked up to Rong Jing.

She pulled him up with force and thrust him in Huo Chuan’s direction.

“Keep an eye on him, don’t let him run around!”

Though Huo Chuan was also scared by the grueso creature outside the window, his courage was stronger than Rong Jing’s.

The shock and fear on his face quickly faded away.

He pulled Rong Jing behind him in response to Qin Ruan.

“THUMP!

THUMP!

THUMP!”

The entity outside the window started to hit against the glass.

Although its movents indicated vigor, it was arguably just a display of threat.

Every hit it took left a bloody print on the glass.

The dark red stains increased in number, rendering the clear glass increasingly murky and almost blocking the upper half of the entity.

Qin Ruan furrowed her eyebrows sensing sothing was not right.

She knew that the supernatural entity couldn’t possibly find its way to her on its own.

There must be soone controlling it from behind the scenes.

What was the motive behind this provocative approach?

In Qin Ruan’s eyes, she felt everything the supernatural entity outside the window was doing, ca off as more of a provocation.

Squinting her calm yet stern face, her eyes turned blood-curdlingly cold and ruthless.

No matter who it was, since they had co to find her, they shall not return unscathed.

“Bang!

Crash!”

Perhaps realizing Qin Ruan’s calm deanor, the entity outside violently shattered the glass.

Shards of glass scattered all over the room, so of it even near Qin Ruan’s feet.

“Holy crap!

That’s bulletproof glass!”

Standing beside Huo Chuan, Rong Jing cried out in shock.
