1142: Chapter 255: Attack of the Twisted Souls 1142: Chapter 255: Attack of the Twisted Souls True Sight could penetrate all illusions, disguises, and invisibility, but this Divine Spell had a significant flaw: it revealed a world in only black and white, unable to detect overly subtle changes in light and shadows.

Lina was well-aware of this drawback, yet in her adventurous life, it wasn’t much of an issue—after all, this wasn’t about watching goblin fireworks where light effects were crucial.

Pannis relied on his hearing and sll to locate enemies, which had similar limitations when facing adversaries that emitted no sound, no scent, and no energy fluctuations, only faint plays of light and shadow.

Naturally, such enemies shouldn’t exist in nature, being tasteless and silent while also evading detection by True Sight, completely defying natural laws and lacking any basis for existence.

However, this place was not rely the natural world—this was the Forbidden Land of Living Souls, feared by all sentient beings, and it was ho to exactly such enemies, nad the Twisted Souls.

The two who were keeping watch had also thought of this, which was why they intentionally dimd the surrounding lights during their watch.

This was to make the vague glimring of such enemies more visible against the darkness of the night.

Indeed, this strategy proved effective: Pannis noticed a subtle change in the light and shadow behind a row of houses before Lina could recover her normal vision from the effects of True Sight.

He imdiately signaled a warning.

The booming of the Crystal Energy gun, in such a silent environnt, was as loud as a Crystal Energy bomb.

No one could continue to sleep through such noise, and thus, within ten seconds after the gunshots rang out, everyone, ard with weapons, rushed out of their quarters.

Of course, this excluded a certain lion who inherently lacked hands and the capability to wield weapons.

The mbers of the adventure team, still groggy from sleep, instinctively ford a defensive formation, ready at a mont’s notice to counter an enemy onslaught, then planned to inquire what exactly had happened.

However, once prepared, there was no need to ask, as everyone could clearly see the cause of Pannis’s alarm: several faint-glowing Twisted Souls passed unimpeded through the walls of the rooms the girls had just left, following in the footsteps of the girls.

One could imagine that, had Pannis signaled the alert just seconds later, the girls might not have had the chance to leave their rooms and would have been directly possessed by the Twisted Souls crossing through the walls.

However, the appearance of the Twisted Souls did not cause panic among the girls.

Being in the Forbidden Land of Living Souls without having taken a limited supply of Fila Potions, encountering an attack by Twisted Souls was not incomprehensible—having not been attacked the previous few nights was rely good luck.

These pitiful beings, wandering unconsciously, did not all have the sa range of perception, and no one could guarantee that they would not incidentally sense soone.

What truly shocked and sowhat panicked the girls was the nature of the Twisted Souls themselves.

Upon seeing them clearly, the girls were plunged into a disheartening mood.

There were five Twisted Souls involved in the attack, all of the sa type: five humanoid Twisted Souls, four n and one woman, all approximately in their thirties, all humans.

Their clothing, armor, and hairstyles resembled popular styles from about forty to fifty years ago, and they even held weapons ford of light and shadows in their hands, ranging from longswords to magic staffs.

Aside from their vague, wrinkled appearances with twisted edges, they looked no different from normal people, except for the expressions on their faces—crazed, hateful, yet marked by an indescribable bewildernt.

The mont they saw the Twisted Souls, the girls were stunned; they didn’t need to speculate to guess who these souls once were—aside from the mbers of an expedition team from forty years earlier, there were hardly any other possibilities.

Throughout their journey, the girls had often imagined they might find these pioneers, especially after finding the first clue left by the expedition team, and had followed the team’s trail ever since.

The girls were increasingly certain they would finally understand what had happened forty years ago and learn the current status of these pioneers.

However, no one had imagined that they would suddenly encounter each other under these circumstances, with the girls utterly unprepared.

Watching the five Twisted Souls’ crazed, hateful contortions and observing their irrational, silent screams, the girls suddenly felt a wave of sadness.

These twisted souls, like themselves, had once been Legendary Rank adventurers, had received countless honors, and had been revered and admired by innurable people.

They had had their own dreams, families, and lovers.

But now, everything was gone.

Now only their twisted souls remained, perhaps still possessing bits of their forr mories, though these too were jumbled and distorted.

Only their insane hatred for regular souls and their endless desire to attack remained.

They were like this—but what about themselves?

With strength similar to these souls, might they too follow the sa path, ultimately joining the ranks of wandering souls?
