The roaring crowd surrounds a large platform on which a gallows has been erected. A man dressed in a torn pale blue tunic is imprisoned, the rope around his neck. Closely watched by two soldiers and the executioner, he balances on a large log. Beside him, a judge finishes reading the charges against the prisoner:
“...convicted of illegal immigration and banditry to be hanged by the neck until dead.”
The crowd, visibly enraged, cheers the sentence and gives free rein to its resentnt:

“To death!”, “The rope for the Nonearby!”, “Filthy thieves: go back and rebel in your own country!”, “Drop dead, all of you, and rid our roads of your plunder!”, “Go on, executioner: do your duty!”
The condemned man glares at the crowd and responds with threats:
“My companions will make you pay dearly!”
Then the executioner strikes the log violently, tearing the criminal's support from him, leaving him with his feet dangling in mid-air. Thus begins his long and cruel ordeal of hanging.
