"Boss, that woman nad Lily, she seems to be more than just a check-in officer, she’s a senior governnt employee."
A black man, holding a cell phone, watched Lily’s retreating figure clad in uniform as she walked away in the dimly lit corridor.
At that mont, he suddenly spotted a white little boy running out from the door they were just discussing.
"Wait." He hung up the phone and asked an African boy passing by, "Who’s that boy? What’s his relationship with that woman?"
But the African boy didn’t answer; he just stared at him fixedly.
"FUCK, this damn little nigger!" The black man pulled out a one-dollar bill.
"That’s Gene, Miss Lily’s son."
Huh? Son?
The black man’s eyes shifted, and he patted the African boy on the head, "You didn’t see , you never saw , understand?"
The African boy resud his blank state, looking confusedly at the young man.
"Shit!" The young man cursed under his breath and pulled out a twenty-dollar bill.
"I didn’t leave the house until nine, then I went to play basketball," said the African boy.
The young man looked at his watch, realizing it was just past eight.
He nodded in satisfaction and let the African boy go.
Afterward, he trailed behind Gene as the boy left the apartnt building.
anwhile, Lily was driving, mulling over her work.
Because of the promotion, she couldn’t stay at ho with Gene and had to hire a full-ti nanny.
But... it was all worth it!
A higher position ant higher pay.
It also ant she could move out of this terrible community sooner and provide Gene with a better living environnt.
"Ding," her new welfare, a governnt-issued phone, rang.
"Hello, Miss Lily, Gene isn’t in his room," the nanny’s voice ca through.
"Oh, he just went out to take out the trash," Lily said casually, "He should be back soon."
After ending the call, she had arrived at the Brooklyn Won’s Rights Protection Center.
"Sigh, more welfare issues to deal with."
After so ti at work, she had deduced certain patterns.
African won mostly applied for relief due to the disappearance of their children’s fathers.
For white won, their main issues centered around dostic violence from male partners.
As for Asians, the most baffling was complaints from neighbors and childcare centers about child abuse.
After signing a few docunts, she rubbed her temples and began to recall.
Wang Jian seed to treat Gene well; he didn’t have that tendency, did he?
But then, another call ca in.
"Miss Lily, Gene still hasn’t co ho," the nanny’s anxious voice said, "I’ve looked in the trash room, and he’s not there!"
Huh?
Gene hasn’t co ho?
Lily thought of the community’s dire environnt, and her heart began to sink.
"Gene..." her lips trembled, and her hands shook uncontrollably.
After forcibly calming herself down, she managed to complete what was usually a simple action with great difficulty.
That was, she dialed "911" to report an ergency.
Afterward, she couldn’t wait to notify anyone else; she drove her car, racing back to the apartnt.
Because the missing person was white, the police arrived quickly.
By the ti Lily staggered back to the apartnt, two officers were already taking a statent from the nanny.
"How is it, any news?" Lily looked at the nanny, hope filling her eyes.
The nanny shook her head helplessly and then turned to the two officers.
"Are you the mother of the missing individual, Gene?" the female officer asked.
"Yes," Lily responded quickly.
"Then, from what you rember, around what ti did he go missing?"
Lily lifted her trembling arm to check her watch, "It should have been around eight this morning."
"So, you’re saying it’s been less than three hours since he went missing?" the male officer sneered and prepared to leave.
At that mont, Lily finally rembered her identity and pulled out her senior governnt employee credentials to hand to the other party.
"Please, I’m begging you, help out," Lily said, uneasily taking out so cash and stuffing it into the officer’s hand.
The officer glanced at the work ID, then at the cash, exchanged a look with his partner, and nodded.
"Alright, we’ll conduct a search."
"Stay at ho and answer the phone at all tis," Lily commanded the nanny in an unquestionable tone.
Afterward, she approached the officer, "Officer, I’m coming with you."
The officer shrugged his shoulders, making an indifferent expression.
But soon, the expressions of the two officers were no longer relaxed.
Because a witness claid that a white young boy had been taken away by an African youth.
That African youth, he was wearing the headscarf of the Limp Gang.
The Limp Gang? The gang that openly shot an Asian in Ti Square?
Because of Wang Jian, Lily, who knew a bit about this, beca even more anxious.
"What are they taking Gene for? Is it a kidnapping?" Lily looked at the officers.
"Well, it could also be drug trafficking," the officer pondered for a mont, then decided to be honest, "Whites attract less attention, and kids are easier to control."
Hearing this, Lily’s spirit imdiately shattered.
She opened her phone with trembling hands and dialed the biological father of Gene and her best friend Lynn.
It has to be said, even though Lily’s ex-husband cared little for Gene beyond paying child support.
But being the biological father, he still arrived quickly.
After berating Lily, he turned to the police.
"I demand that the suspect’s sketch be made imdiately and a manhunt be started."
"Mr. Lawyer, please pay attention to the ti," said one officer, looking at Lily’s ex-husband languidly.
This lawyer had once helped criminals get off the hook.
Well, then they just had to play by the rules!
At this ti, Lynn also drove to the scene.
The one accompanying her was the lawyer Matthew, who wished to curry favor with Wang Jian.
"Sorry, officers, please take this call," Matthew handed his phone to them.
The two officers took the phone with confusion, their deanor quickly becoming serious.
"Yes, Chief, we’ll start the investigation right away."
Watching the two officers walk away, Matthew gave Lily a sneer.
As a billionaire’s lover, she was too unskilled at using this advantage.
As a senior governnt employee, was it so hard to get the contact information of the Brooklyn Police Chief?
Or was it so hard to let slip her relationship with Wang Jian?
Even if it were a lie, the desperate Brooklyn police would still give it a try, to get more sponsorship from the newly rich.
Moreover, her relationship with Wang Jian was real!
Just as Lynn was comforting Lily, and Matthew and Lily’s ex-husband exchanged glances, the sound of police sirens rose outside the apartnt.
The support from the Brooklyn Police Departnt had arrived.
...
"So, you didn’t kidnap the woman but this kid?" the man with the dreadlocks looked at his subordinate, his tone filled with confusion.
"Yes," the subordinate said, "This is the child of that Asian author’s lover, and it’s said he’s quite fond of this kid too."
"I’ve heard about this child," El ca over to the man with dreadlocks, "We could give it a try."
He handed a piece of paper over, "This is what I found, Wang Jian’s phone number."
The man with dreadlocks took the phone, hesitation creeping in.
After all, the man on the other end was a billionaire!
"It’s alright, boss, the Wang is Chinese," one of his n reassured him, "Chinese are timid and willing to pay up."
"I even think we could start by asking for $500,000, and after getting it, demand another $1 million!"
Chinese?
The man with dreadlocks thought for a mont; it seed there was a logic to this argunt.
He bit his lip, and dialed the phone number.
"We’re sorry, the number you have dialed is not in service."
