"Who else!" Pei Jiang roared, and all the Royal soldiers stepped back in terror.
After he led his soldiers in, he brandished the giant warhamr, sweeping left and right. None of the Royal soldiers could get close. Plus, he had his own soldiers assisting him; he wasn’t alone. That was how he forcibly created this temporary opening.
"You are all aiding a tyrant!"
Seeing the Royal soldiers shocked into silence, Pei Jiang proceeded to his next step. The enemy was frightened and their morale had plumted, but it wasn’t enough to secure victory yet.
"You’re protecting a demon that has devoured a million of our brethren? Is this what you call defending our hos and our country?"
"No, you’re protecting a demon! If that demon can devour a million today, it can devour ten million tomorrow!"
"When one million people were taken, your families weren’t among them. What if it’s ten million next? Can you still guarantee their safety? What exactly are you protecting?"
"Are you protecting the demon that will devour your own families?!!!"
Pei Jiang used an amplifying Charm, ensuring every soldier of the Court present heard his words. Many of them paused.
This alard the allied Temple Masters, while so individuals within the Court grew furious and ashad.
"Do you believe such rebellious words? Aren’t you afraid they’ll enter the city and slaughter your families?" a general shouted.
"Hmph. We are here to save people. If we fail, your families will beco human sacrifices tomorrow, and even you yourselves might beco human sacrifices," Pei Jiang retorted disdainfully.
He had precisely grasped everyone’s ntality. They served in the army, risking their lives, for no other reason than to gain an exemption from becoming human sacrifices.
But if what Pei Jiang said was true, and another ten million were required, the Central Plains certainly had enough people. However, who knew if soone might be bribed or deliberately cause trouble, resulting in them and their entire families becoming sacrificial offerings?
Fine, even if their families were safe this ti, and the next, what about the ti after that? With so many Demon Gods in the world, a vast number of human sacrifices were demanded annually. If two or three more such grand sacrificial rites occurred, it was questionable whether there would even be enough people left.
When the Demon Gods returned this ti, would they show restraint? No, they would only beco more rapacious.
"Silence! How dare you disrespect the revered deities!" a Temple Master berated.
Ordinarily, this would be a normal reaction. However, failing to consider the current circumstances, his words shattered the precarious balance.
A soldier at the front imdiately threw his weapon to the ground, yelling, "To hell with this god! I’m done serving it!"
With soone taking the lead, the clang of discarded weapons echoed all around.
Everyone harbored grievances against the Demon Gods, but the Demon Gods were too powerful for anyone to resist. Now that soone had broken through their defenses with unstoppable montum, and they themselves were no match for this newcor, they readily surrendered, choosing to follow him and fight against the Demon Gods.
"Audacious! This is rebellion! Aren’t you afraid of the revered deities— Ah!" So sided with the Human Clan, while others sided with the Demon Gods. Witnessing this, the latter were naturally incensed. The speaker didn’t even finish his sentence before a blade wielded by his own personal guard pierced his heart from behind.
Such an incident wasn’t particularly surprising; if one dared to shout loyalty to the old regi, soone else dared to act against them.
The subsequent process of incorporating the troops beca much simpler. Sweat drenched Pei Jiang’s forehead beneath his face mask. Luckily, the mask concealed it; otherwise, his nervousness would have been exposed.
He had taken a huge gamble; the slightest misstep could have ant total failure.
Fortunately, he succeeded. He had not only dismantled the Capital’s Defense but also brought all its military forces under his command. What lay ahead was now much simpler.
He could charge straight into battle. But first, he needed to reorganize the troops and deliver a speech. However, he keenly sensed that sothing was amiss. One million people, yet there was no trace of them? The entire Capital couldn’t possibly hold that many, yet the area they were in was deserted. Logically, it should be teeming with people.
"This is bad! All units, forced march! To the sacrificial site to rescue the people!"
"Everyone, including the Imperial Guard, Imperial Forest Army, and all other Capital Camp forces!" Pei Jiang commanded imdiately. He knew sothing must have gone terribly wrong for the situation to be like this.
The soldiers, though not understanding the reason, offered no protest. They obeyed Pei Jiang’s command, imdiately forming up and heading towards the sacrificial site.
Pei Jiang suspected the one million people might already be dead. Perhaps they were killed en route to the Capital and then processed into so kind of ritual offering—one that concentrated the essence of a million souls. Otherwise, slaughtering a million people outright would be an impossible feat. Even pulling up a million blades of grass wouldn’t be easy, let alone the sheer number of executioners such a massacre would require. Yet, what puzzled Pei Jiang most was how no word of such an atrocity had leaked out. But he quickly dismissed this doubt, attributing it to the Demon Gods. The Heavenly Luo Million Paths Dog Deity was the most powerful Demon God; accomplishing such a feat would hardly be beyond its capabilities.
"The army has entered the city! A bunch of incompetents!" The Great Strength Monkey Deity’s expression changed drastically. He wasn’t afraid of the army itself, but if his source of faith was cut off, that was another matter entirely. He knew perfectly well what an army occupying the Capital signified: a change of dynasty.
Seizing this mont of distraction, Li Qinglian’s longsword shot out, piercing straight through the Great Strength Monkey Deity’s head. The Demon God had no ti to react.
However, given the Great Strength Monkey Deity’s nature, it did not die. It quickly recovered, muscles clamping down to lock the longsword within its skull as it prepared a fatal counterattack with its massive hand.
Li Qinglian, having dared to strike, naturally had a follow-up. As the Demon God attacked, he twisted the longsword. A cyan lotus blood at the sword’s tip, making intimate contact with the Great Strength Monkey Deity’s brain.
The Great Strength Monkey Deity’s Divine Power instantly stagnated.
The God-eating Spirit Body, by its very nature, could target a deity’s Divine Power. Li Qinglian had deliberately held back this ability, saving it as an unexpected, decisive trump card. Had he revealed it earlier, the Great Strength Monkey Deity would have been on guard, and this move would never have succeeded so easily.
"You... still had a hidden card?" The light in the Great Strength Monkey Deity’s eyes began to fade. He hadn’t imagined Li Qinglian would go so far as to burn his own lifespan to conceal this trump card.
"Safe travels. No need to see out." Li Qinglian withdrew his longsword. Activating his God-eating Spirit Body, he devoured all of the Great Strength Monkey Deity’s Divine Power.
The body shriveled into a desiccated human corpse and collapsed. As a re vessel, the believer had died the mont the Demon God descended; he was always a disposable pawn.
Li Qinglian had no ti to inspect the changes in his God-eating Spirit Body. Sheathing his longsword, he rushed towards the sacrificial site. His primary target had always been the Heavenly Luo Million Paths Dog Deity, not the Great Strength Monkey Deity. Fortunately, the evolution of his God-eating Spirit Body had also replenished the lifespan he had burned.
CRUNCH!
A large piece of atball’s sharp fang chipped off. To Xuan Ao Emperor Chang Guang, the sight was almost comical. "Hahaha, just leave! Otherwise, once the ritual is complete, I’ll... Wait. The army has entered the city? What’s going on? Weren’t there assurances that nothing would go wrong?"
Xuan Ao Emperor Chang Guang had thought everything was secure. Although atball had shown intent to devour him, his turtle shell had guaranteed his safety.
"You seem quite confident, don’t you?"
atball abruptly ceased its assault. This did not bring Xuan Ao Emperor Chang Guang any sense of security; instead, a dreadful premonition blood within him.
Looking closer, Xuan Ao Emperor Chang Guang saw that countless tentacles had inexplicably sprouted all over atball’s body. These tentacles enveloped atball completely, making it resemble a potato that had sprouted shoots all over.
The sight struck terror into Xuan Ao Emperor Chang Guang.
"Wait! What are you trying to do?" Xuan Ao Emperor Chang Guang decided to flee. With the army in the city, their advantage was lost. Retreat was the best option.
"Why, using the most primitive thod of feeding, of course," atball’s voice dripped with even greater malice, its dark aura intensifying.
Before Xuan Ao Emperor Chang Guang could speak, a multitude of tentacles slamd onto his turtle shell. Normally, they shouldn’t have been able to penetrate it. However, empowered by sheer malice, the shell beca as soft as tofu. The tentacles pierced through, lting a large hole and granting atball direct access to the flesh beneath.
Even his Regeneration Ability failed to activate.
His flesh and blood were siphoned away. In less than a minute, Xuan Ao Emperor Chang Guang was entirely devoured by atball amidst agonized screams. Even the desiccated corpse that had served as the Demon God’s vessel—his own body—was not spared from atball’s Devouring.
After finishing its al, atball gazed into the distance, its expression dark and brooding.
"So many others are after the scraps. I need to hurry, or I’ll get nothing," atball thought, then urgently departed.
