The walkie-talkie was brought over by Li Yu during the Dragon Slayer event; there were seven in total, and Tom’s squad was equipped with two for their mission this ti so even if the troops were split into two routes, they could maintain contact at all tis.
And just after Tom had warned the nine people staying behind outside the village, they encountered an attack.
The attack ca silently; in the blink of an eye, several cold arrows whooshed out from the woods!
Fortunately, the Black Hound Guard had received a pre-emptive warning, and coupled with the Dwarf Armor they were wearing, only one unlucky guard was hit in the leg among the nine, while the remaining eight were all unhard and subsequently raised their Dragon Scale Shields.
The lizard people were typically valorous and vehent, prone to getting hot-headed, and upon the sudden assault, many imdiately started yelling and were ready to charge into the woods to clash with the attackers.
Fortunately, the person with the walkie-talkie hadn’t forgotten their duty and reported to Tom before the charge, almost giving Tom a stroke from anger, and he imdiately ordered them to cease the pursuit.
But the Black Hound Guard had only been established recently and lacked the disciplined nature of the elite military corps from the great families of the Western Region, and as Tom was not a lizard person, his commands usually carried weight during training but were less effective in real situations without his presence.
Upon hearing his command, so stopped their chase, but others charged even faster. Seeing those who ran faster, the ones who had slowed down picked up pace again.
Thankfully, Li Yu soon took over the walkie-talkie from Tom.
The lizard people might ignore Tom, but they revered Prophet Li Yu like a God, and they followed his words without question, eventually halting their advance.
At this ti, the second wave of the attack ca, but the targets were no longer the nine warriors of the Black Hound Guard, but instead their war horses tied to the side.
Accompanied by a series of agonized whinnies, those war horses fell to the ground, one after another, pierced by arrows.
The horses ridden by Li Yu and the guard who had co to report earlier, all perished in this wave of attacks.
Li Yu also received this news through the walkie-talkie the mont it happened.
The attackers’ thought process was evidently very clear, killing the war horses to sever their connection with the outside world, preventing them from returning to the Double Rest Sect or seeking aid from the Arias family; in other words, this ambush was preditated.
Li Yu found it hard to believe that ordinary villagers could possess such ticulous strategic thinking, so there was likely outside interference in this event.
Li Yu then issued orders through the walkie-talkie to the nine people outside the village to regroup in the village.
Afterwards, Li Yu approached the captured old man, who, now that the cat was out of the bag, was no longer pretending to be warm and hospitable, and began cursing venomously.
"Monster! You heathens worshiping foreign gods! You are greedier than hyenas and more poisonous than snakes! You are the pests in our fields! I curse you, may you all et a terrible end!"
As soone accustod to surfing online and frequenting various forums, Li Yu was unfazed by such insults; one would find harsher words under hot topics on Weibo or Tieba, or perhaps on Hupu during a live match discussion – those could pack a greater punch.
Li Yu patiently waited for the man to finish his tirade before saying, "What happened here, why did you attack us?"
But the old man did not answer, continuing to spew curses instead. It was evident he harbored deep-seated hatred for the Double Rest Sect and seed indifferent to the prospect of being killed by Li Yu and the others.
Tom was getting annoyed by the insults; in his rcenary days, he would have already disciplined the man, but now without Li Yu’s order, he could only have his n forcefully restrain the old man, while he himself stepped outside the door, waiting to et up with the nine people from outside the village.
"Where is the owner of that dress now?" Li Yu asked, changing the question.
This ti the old man beca even more irate, and it was unclear where he found the strength to almost break free from the hold of the two guards, all the while yelling, "You’re all going to die today, die! Pay for Liss with your lives! Damn heathens!"
"Who is Liss, your granddaughter? How did she die?" Li Yu continued to press.
"Liss isn’t dead, she’s just playing outside and hasn’t co back yet, yes, that’s right, wife, hurry up and make dinner for Liss."
Perhaps the stimulus he had received over the last few days was too much; the old man now seed sowhat mad.
Li Yu guessed that it would be difficult to get any more information from him. A guard suggested asking the mistress of the first house they visited, but Li Yu declined.
Since he had realized that today’s incident was very likely a trap specifically set for the Double Rest Sect, Li Yu did not want to drag others down with him, especially not that woman who had just given birth to a child.
Tom, standing at the door, had by now noticed his colleagues retreating into the village from the entrance.
He strode forward, resting his hand on the sword at his waist, and looked around vigilantly.
However, there was no movent nearby.
But this in itself was unusual, because in addition to people, there should be many animals in a village, and it was impossible for it to be this quiet.
Where had all the people in the village gone?
Tom soon got his answer, as more guards ca inside, nurous villagers erged from every corner of the village.
Only a few held so poor-quality swords and longbows, most were just wielding pitchforks, hoes, and similar farming tools, with no armor whatsoever, but they surrounded the area from all sides.
Tom was amused by these peasants; they had even let in the guards who were on duty outside the village. Could it be that they were planning to capture all of them at once?
Tom said to Li Yu, "Prophet rlin, there are only so peasants opposite us, let lead so n to teach them a lesson. Just by killing a few, the rest will surely scatter."
Li Yu replied, "If you do that, those who incited them to attack us would be delighted."
Tom was taken aback, "What do you an?"
"We are here to carry out missionary work, not to fight. Even if you win, how will the people from other villages perceive those of us who are sent here once word gets out?" said Li Yu.
"Then, shall we slaughter them all?" Tom said in a lower voice.
"......"
"Let’s try to resolve this peacefully as much as possible."
"But by the looks of them on the other side, they don’t seem to have any intention of resolving this peacefully," Tom, who was the first to spot the villagers, and with his keen eyesight, clearly saw the angry expressions on the faces of the villagers.
"Let’s try talking first, at least we need to understand why they are attacking us," said Li Yu.
