They were not well-inford about many of the actual details and were just putting on a show, so now they were indeed worried their lies would be exposed.

"Besides, if the old woman has passed away, shouldn’t you be calling the police right now? Coming here solves nothing and proves nothing at all."
"Don’t think I’m unaware that you were hired to put on this act. The motive is quite clear by now. Quit this vile deception here, or I will call the police."

He just laid out all the facts as they were.
Honestly, he thought these people were rather laughable.
The actors, although quite talented, had little understanding of the actual situation.
