Chapter 42: Su Yue Takes the Initiative! A Deal Struck!

????“I just got back,” Bai Xuan said, glancing at Bai Yu. “Yu-jie, are you alright?”

??“It’s nothing serious, just feeling a little off,” Bai Yu replied, shaking her head gently. “But after a nap, I’m much better.”

??“Really? That’s a relief.” Bai Xuan exhaled, only then realizing he’d been holding his breath.

??“But—” Suddenly, Bai Yu reached out and pinched his nose.

??“Ow, ow, ow!”

??“What kind of at did you buy yesterday? Next ti, don’t just grab anything. Food poisoning is no joke.”

??“Alright, alright! Let go, that really hurts!”

??“Mm.”

??Bai Yu released him, her tone softening. “And you? Besides your stomach acting up last night, any other symptoms?”

??“There’s also…” Bai Xuan hesitated, lowering his voice, “Um… can I really say this?”

??“?”

??“Never mind, better not.” Bai Xuan grinned and stood up. “I’ll go make dinner. You just rest.”

??“Mm…”

??Bai Yu nodded, her gaze drifting absently to her own hands.

??After the pain she’d just endured, she realized sothing in her body had changed again.

??Her strength—and her senses—both felt vastly enhanced.

??“Could it have been that at?” Bai Yu muttered, still struggling to believe it.

??But her thoughts were a tangled ss; too much had happened lately.

??Besides, her body had inexplicably grown stronger once before, even awakening an Anomalous Ability.

??It was impossible to say what exactly had caused all this.

??Not long after, Bai Xuan called out, “Yu-jie, dinner’s ready.”

??“Coming.”

??Bai Yu responded, stepping out of her room.

??She had barely sat down and picked up her chopsticks before speaking: “By the way, an Investigator from the Investigation Bureau invited

to join. Even as an assistant, the monthly pay is better than a Security Bureau officer’s. Do you think I should go for it?”

??“Investigation Bureau?” Bai Xuan imdiately recalled the Investigators he’d t before. After a mont’s thought, he replied, “There are only about a hundred Investigators in all of Ninghang City, right? If you join them… you probably won’t have much ti to co ho.”

??Compared to Security Bureau officers, Investigators were rare and highly valued.

??It ant they spent most of their ti on call at the Bureau, with almost no chance to co ho.

??Of course, their benefits and status were worlds apart from ordinary officers.

??Pros and cons, really.

??“Yeah… you’re right.” Bai Yu nodded, her interest in joining the Investigation Bureau fading a little.

??She continued, “I have to head out after dinner.”

??“Work again?” Bai Xuan frowned.

??“Mm.” Bai Yu nodded, saying nothing more.

??After dinner, Bai Yu changed into her Security Bureau uniform and hurried out the door.

??Bai Xuan washed the dishes, then returned to his room.

??“Human, is the Queen of this planet feeling better?” Mare Alera trotted up to greet him.

??“Yeah, she’s much better now.”

??Bai Xuan reached out to ruffle Mare Alera’s head. “Did you all help her?”

??“It was the little knight’s magic!” Mare Alera announced proudly.

??“Thanks, Serene.” Bai Xuan turned to Serene.

??Serene simply nodded, her expression calm and collected.

??“Human! What are we doing today?” Mare Alera pressed, nearly bouncing with impatience. “I’m bored out of my mind at ho! Let’s go destroy the world already!”

??“Alright, alright—let

check first.”

??Bai Xuan laughed and unfolded the Book of Worlds…

??……

??Elsewhere, Su Yue sat alone in her room, a hint of irritation flickering across her face.

??“Miss.”

??The Old Butler entered, bowing respectfully. “Master has heard about the threat from the Extremist Organization. He’s already contacted the Investigation Bureau and the Security Bureau—they’ll be sending people to protect you soon.”

??“Father, honestly! I told him I don’t need his help, and I certainly don’t need the Investigation Bureau ddling in my affairs!”

??Su Yue folded her arms, her patent-leather shoes tapping impatiently against the floor.

??“Miss, Master only ans well,” the Old Butler counseled softly. “The Extremist Organization is no trivial matter. Even you could be caught off guard if you’re not careful.”

??“Ugh…” Su Yue let out a helpless sigh. “Fine, let’s do it his way.”

??“Thank you for understanding.” The Old Butler nodded and quietly withdrew.

??Once he was gone, Su Yue fished a white collar out of her pocket. Five distinct symbols adorned it: triangle, circle, square, heart, and star.

??Muttering to herself, “The Investigation Bureau can’t be trusted. I’ll have to rely on myself.”

??She fastened the collar around her pale neck and pressed her fingertip to the triangle.

??In the next instant, a faint light shimred in her sapphire eyes, as if she’d entered so extraordinary state.

??……

??“Achoo!”

??Bai Xuan sneezed suddenly, rubbing his nose in confusion. “What’s going on? Is it getting colder?”

??“Human, are you alright?” Mare Alera cocked her head at him.

??“It’s nothing.” Bai Xuan shook his head, glancing over at Serene, who was busy dealing with a flood of skeleton soldiers erupting from the earth.

??He called out, “Serene, is there a faster way? At this rate, we’ll be at it till dawn.”

??“There is,” Serene replied with a small nod, “but it’ll cost a lot of life mana.”

??“That’s fine, just go for it.”

??Bai Xuan urged her on. “I’ll replenish you when we get back.”

??Serene’s eyes brightened at that. She gripped her Sword of No Light in both hands and began chanting softly:

??“Sacred light…”

??As her incantation ended, a massive golden magic circle flared to life beneath their feet.

??Blinding rays of light erupted.

??The skeletons hadn’t even crawled out before they were obliterated by the Holy Light.

??“All done.”

??Serene sheathed the Sword of No Light and quickly returned to Bai Xuan’s side.

??“Holy magic really is the bane of skeletons…” Bai Xuan muttered, turning to activate the Teleportation Array and head ho.

??Suddenly, a foreign consciousness invaded his mind, stirring sothing deep within his soul.

??What the hell?

??Bai Xuan frowned, a prickling unease spreading through his chest.

??Could this be a ntal-type Anomalous Ability?

??Just as his thoughts spun, a familiar voice echoed in his mind: “Hello, mysterious Sli Mask.”

??Su Yue?

??Bai Xuan blinked in surprise. He was certain Su Yue’s voice had just sounded in his mind.

??And the way it was transmitted felt almost identical to the telepathic bond he shared with his Legendaries.

??“What’s up?” Bai Xuan asked.

??“Did you open the present I gave you?” Su Yue’s voice was soft, almost playful.

??“Ah… I forgot.” Bai Xuan scratched his nose, realizing he’d completely forgotten about it.

??“Forgot??” Su Yue paused, then let out a light laugh. “Doesn’t matter. What matters is—I want to make a deal with you…”
