The words hung in the air between them while her smile was frozen solid on her face.

She then blinked slowly, thinking that maybe the champagne was playing so sort of nasty trick on her ears or sothing.

But no, Alex Vance’s eyes were deadly serious in a way that felt totally wrong under these bright party lights.

"I still love you, Lorena," he repeated, his voice even more tender this ti.

Mira could do nothing other than stare blankly at him again. But she soon realized she needed to say sothing, so she let out an awkward and strangled laugh.

"You have to be as drunk as I am."

But even she knew that he definitely wasn’t drunk at all because his face was too clear and focused. He obviously knew exactly what he was saying.

He leaned in a little again. "You can pretend all you want, Lorena, but I know even you can still feel it too."

She took a step back to create space even though it was a wobbly one. "I’m sorry, but that’s all in your head. I feel nothing."

Knowing where this was leading, she tried to run away or escape him, but his grip was firm on her.

It was exactly the hold of a man who was used to getting exactly what he wanted.

He chuckled as if her resistance was rely the cutest thing he had ever seen. "You sure didn’t think that you could erase that easily, did you?"

Mira didn’t know how else to answer at this point, so she looked around her instead.

People nearby were either too drunk or too busy pretending not to watch them. A few were whispering behind their hands, and she could swear she even saw a cara flash at the corner of her eye, but she wasn’t too sure.

After all, she felt so dizzy and not just from the wine but also from the room itself.

She moved away from Alex again, realizing people might be watching them, and this wouldn’t be in her favor. "You’re making a scene."

Alex gave that infuriating handso smile again. "Then let’s not."

He gestured smoothly toward the exit. "Co on," he said in a whisper. "Let’s just get out of here. You and I alone. No caras, no vultures, and definitely no fake smiles."

She blinked hard again. "Where... where’s Callis?" she mumbled, as if finally realizing that she hadn’t seen her in a few minutes now.

She stumbled away from Alex and weaved through the cloud of glittering dresses. "Callis?" she called out, but her voice was now weak, and the music swallowed it easily.

Alex was right behind her though, his hand coming to her elbow to steady her as she nearly crashed into a waiter carrying a tray of empty glasses. "Whoa, slow down, Lorena. I can take you to her."

Mira shook her head, but the motion only made her sway even more. "No... I just... she has my purse... my phone..."

"Then let just drop you ho," he interrupted. "You can find each other later. She might have left knowing you’d be safe with ."

Her mind was getting even foggier by the second, and even at that, she could not help the embarrassnt she was now feeling.

She needed to get out of here before she made a fool of herself and ended up in more hot soup than she was already in.

So when he said, "My car’s right outside," it sounded like a very perfect solution, and so she let him lead her.

"I should really call her though..." she murmured as they moved toward the elevators.

"I know, but you can’t right now. You said your phone’s with her. Just breathe, okay? I’ve got you."

The elevator ride down was quiet and humming. Mira leaned against the cool mirrored wall while staring at her reflection.

But all she could see was ten different Lorenas staring right back at her, all with dazed and glassy eyes. It was almost terrifying if not that she was drunk out of her mind already.

"You okay?" Alex’s voice was soft again.

Mira nodded weakly. "Just dizzy. Or maybe I’m just floating, because I can’t really tell the difference right now."

He smiled as his hand settled on her waist to steady her. "Then I’ll be your gravity tonight."

Even if she was drunk right now, Mira could not help the roll of her eyes.

That is the cheesiest line I have ever heard in my entire life! And I’ve heard a lot.

But instead of saying that out, a half laugh, half hiccup escaped her because this whole situation was so absurdly like a bad movie.

Except it wasn’t a movie, and she was the star who had forgotten all her lines and just couldn’t find the way off the set.

The elevator finally dinged, and the doors slid open.

The parking garage was where they were at now, and it was like another world entirely. It was so cold, and the air slled of concrete and car exhaust. Even the lights flickered ahead of them.

The sound of her unsteady heels on the ground echoed loudly while mixing with his calm footsteps.

She could swear that she felt like fainting with every step that she took.

What on earth do they put in these rich people champagnes?

"Alex, I think I should—" she started to say even though her words were still slurring together, but Alex was quick to interrupt her.

"Shh," he said, with his hand back on her lower back again. "You’ve had too much, so just sit down first and breathe. It’s okay."

He clicked a button on his key fob, and the lights of a sleek and scary-looking black car flashed.

He then opened the passenger door like a perfect gent and tried to guide her into the seat with his hands now on her shoulders.

"But wait, I said I’m fine," Mira managed to insist while pushing against his chest, but her arms felt like noodles. "I can manage."

He caught her wrists to hold her still. "You can’t even stand up straight, Lorena."

"Don’t... don’t touch ," she said.

But he didn’t let go. Instead, he helped her in, and as soon as she was seated, he crouched down beside the open car so that his face was level with hers.

"Why are you fighting so hard, Lorena? Why do that? It’s ."

She could not help but glare at him, but he only chuckled at that. "Look at you, shaking so hard I can even feel it from here."

He cupped her head, and Mira tried to wiggle out of it. "Alex, stop it."

"You say that, but I know you don’t an it," he challenged with a smile.

"I actually do an it," she snapped this ti as she shoved at his shoulder with all her might, even though it didn’t do much because he didn’t even budge.

His hand was still cupping her cheek.

Mira hated how this was going too far. He may be Alex Vance, but she definitely wasn’t interested in doing anything with him while drunk.

"Lorena," he said with a confident voice, "you don’t an that. I can tell because of the way you’re looking at right now. We belong together."

Her heart was now beating so fast and hard that she thought it might break through her ribs. She tried to push him away again, but it was the sa result.

"I’m not looking at you in any way. I’m just dizzy, so please..." she begged. "Please, just drop like you said and let’s go. Stop touching ."

His thumb rely stroked her cheekbone as he ignored her and leaned in again.

This ti, his face was so close that his lips were literally inches from hers.

She was about to push him away again when—

SCREEEEEEEECH!

The sound of tires screaming on concrete ripped through the garage. It was so loud and sudden that it sounded like a gunshot.

Both of them jerked their heads around at the sa ti as blinding white headlights flooded their own car, pinning them in its glare.

Alex shielded his own eyes as his face twisted in annoyance. "What the actual hell—"

The headlights soon went off alongside the roaring engine, leaving a sudden silence.

Then the backseat door of the car swung open as Lucas stepped out.

He didn’t even say a word, neither did he hesitate for even a second. He just moved silently towards them.

Mira’s blurry and alcohol-soaked mind finally tried to catch up. "Lucas?"

But Lucas didn’t even bother looking at her. Yet.

His eyes were locked on Alex, and in one brutal motion, he grabbed Alex by his expensive collar and drove his fist straight into his jaw.
