The plan he was referring to was the rotation of groups.
The expedition team at the front would engage and deal with any enemy that appeared, without interference from the others.
Once their battle concluded, the group that had just fought would move to the rear, while the next group in line would take the lead and handle the next encounter.
In this way, every expedition group would have ample ti to rest after each fight.
