Chapter 30: She stayed

Morning light filtered through the curtains.

Lucian woke slowly, every muscle protesting. His ribs—wrapped carefully in bandages—still ached with each breath.

Worth it.

He shifted slightly, then froze.

Seraphina was asleep in the chair by his desk. Sword was resting across her lap. Head tilted back against the wall. Mouth slightly open. Possibly drooling.

Breathing soft and even.

She stayed.

She actually fucking stayed.

He hadn’t expected that. She could have left the mont he closed his eyes. Instead she’d locked the door, set her sword within reach, and just... stayed.

He didn’t quite know what to do with that.

Watching over . All night. Like I’m soone worth protecting. She gives a shit whether I wake up or not. She actually gives a shit.

Don’t read into it. Don’t—

Fuck it. I’m reading into it. She stayed. That ans she’s totally ready to get in bed with .

...Okay, maybe not ready-ready. But the denial is cracking. She’s feeling sothing.

Even if she’d stab

for saying it out loud.

He tried to sit up quietly.

His ribs had other opinions. The pain ca sharp and imdiate and he hissed through his teeth before he could stop himself.

Seraphina’s eyes snapped open.

She was alert before she was fully awake — hand already moving toward her sword, body already shifting into sothing defensive. Then her eyes found him, and the recognition settled in slowly. The hard chair. His dimly lit room. The bandages.

Right.

For a mont, neither of them said anything. They just stared at each other.

Then, Lucian offered her a faint, entirely too innocent smile.

Seraphina blinked, her sleep-addled brain finally processing his smirk. Her eyes widened slightly before she instinctively brought the back of her hand to her mouth, quickly wiping away a tiny, incriminating trace of drool.

Lucian’s smile only grew.

Her crimson hair was ssy. Face slightly flushed from sleep. Eyes still half-lidded and unfocused.

She looked soft.

Like sothing he wasn’t supposed to see.

God, she’s beautiful like this. Even with the drooling.

Then awareness hit and her spine straightened.

"Y-You’re awake." Her voice was rough from sleep.

There’s the stutter. She’s flustered. Oh, this is good.

So of his usual cockiness returned.

"You stayed."

"I—" She looked away sharply. "I was just making sure you didn’t die. That’s all."

"All night?"

"You have broken ribs. And soone is actively trying to kill you. It was... strategic."

"Strategic, Yes."

Lucian just looked at her.

Her ears went pink.

There it is. That blush. She knows I don’t believe her bullshit excuses and she’s embarrassed about it.

Adorable. Absolutely fucking adorable.

"WHAT?" she snapped, finally unable to take the stare.

"Nothing."

"Don’t— Stop looking at

like that."

"Like what?"

"Like—like you’re laughing at ."

"I’m not laughing."

"You’re smiling."

He was.

Can’t help it. She’s trying so hard to pretend she doesn’t care and failing spectacularly.

She stood abruptly, grabbing her sword. "Are you going to be insufferable about this or can I leave with my dignity?"

"You can leave."

"Good."

She made it to the door. Hand on the knob.

Stopped.

Don’t say it. Let her go. Don’t push—

Fuck it.

"What," she said flatly, not turning around. She could feel him staring.

"Thank you."

"I told you not to—"

"I know."

Silence.

She didn’t leave.

She’s not leaving. Why isn’t she leaving? Fuck it, let

just tease you then.

"Seraphina."

"What."

"You can stay again tonight if you want."

Her ears, and the exposed back of her neck, flushed a deep, furious red. He could see the blush spreading even from behind.

His smile turned absolutely devilish.

"I— Y-you— that’s NOT—"

She yanked the door open and walked out.

The door closed with slightly more force than necessary.

[AFFECTION INCREASED] Seraphina Ashenblade: 82 → 85Trigger: She stayed. He knows she stayed. And she knows he knows. The denial is getting weaker.

Lucian sat there, still smiling.

Fuck yes. She stayed the whole night. Watching over . Fell asleep in my chair. Protected

even when I was unconscious and couldn’t see it.

His smile widened as he lay back on the bed.

85 affection. Just one more push and she’ll totally be in my bed.

One heroine down. Except... she’s not just a heroine anymore, is she? Fuck.

—----

An hour later, Lucian sat on the edge of his bed and stared at his reflection in the small mirror across the room.

He looked terrible.

Good to know the outside matches the inside.

He’d taken a bath. Changed into clean clothes. Done everything a reasonable person did after surviving an assassination attempt and spending the night being nursed by a girl who would absolutely deny nursing him.

His ribs had not improved.

He pressed two fingers carefully against his left side.

Pain shot through him imdiately, sharp and unforgiving.

Yeah. Still pretty much broken.

The bandages Seraphina had wrapped were doing their job — containing the damage, keeping everything in place. But containing wasn’t healing. Every breath was a reminder of that.

I need actual healing. Real healing. Not bandages and... fuck the pain is too much. I can’t keep limping around campus looking like I got hit by a fucking carriage.

The infirmary was three minutes away.

He thought about it for exactly four seconds before dismissing it entirely.

Going to the infirmary ant questions.

How did this happen?

Who attacked you?

Why were you out after curfew?

Why do you sll like expensive perfu with poor decisions?

Questions he couldn’t answer. Doing so ant pulling Seraphina into the spotlight. It ant exposing the investigation, the shadow assassin, and the blackmail. Worse, it would hand the mastermind behind this the perfect ammunition to finish what they started.

So. Not the infirmary.

Wait... Aria.
