The police arrived much faster than Wang Jian had expected. He and Cai Qiong had just returned to the mountain road when they encountered a fully ard SWAT team, reportedly deployed via helicopter from the city. Wang Jian later learned this was because Cai Qiong had directly called the Chief of Police.
Upon seeing the pair, the officers let out a collective sigh of relief. To be precise, Wang Jian noticed the lead officer visibly relax the mont he saw Cai Qiong.
After receiving an accurate report, a group of police officers and SWAT mbers headed deep into the mountains. Leading them was Sun Hao, the captain of the criminal investigation team, accompanied by his elite officers. This response was unavoidable; given the involvent of firearms and the Cai Family, they couldn’t afford to take it lightly.
"Captain Sun, the Cai Family’s little princess is really lucky. Those two guys are wily old foxes," Zhou Dasheng, a veteran from his own team, whispered beside Sun Hao. "But that young man’s shoulder wound seems to match his description of events."
Sun Hao nodded. "This kid is no simpleton. What he said is likely true. It seems Monkey and his partner really did fall at his hands."
"But we’ll only know for sure after we see for ourselves."
When the group arrived at the location Wang Jian and Cai Qiong had described, they spotted two figures on the ground from a distance. Everyone’s expression changed, not because they saw bodies, but because there were two wolves there.
"HISS, there are actually wolves in these mountains?"
"I thought that was just a story old folks told to scare children."
Zhou Dasheng muttered under his breath, "Captain, what do we do? Those two are probably dead. The wolves must have been attracted by the scent of blood."
Sun Hao didn’t respond. He studied the wolves carefully, signaling for everyone to halt and scan the surroundings. After all, wolves were pack animals. Seeing two might an there were more. Although they were ard, they preferred to save their ammunition if possible to avoid the mountain of paperwork that would follow.
Perhaps their luck held out. Sun Hao hadn’t hesitated for long when the two wolves started to move. The wolves were clearly wary of people and retreated imdiately upon spotting the large group.
When Sun Hao and his team got closer, their eyes widened.
"Damn!"
"What the hell!"
"The kid was telling the truth! Lao Zhou is still alive!"
Because Lao Zhou was covered in blood, one of his legs had been horrifically mauled by the wolves. This ant that just monts ago, more than a dozen of them had been forced to stand dozens of ters away and watch wolves gnaw on a living man.
Even for these world-weary n, the thought was nauseating. For so reason, an image of Wang Jian surfaced in their minds.
"Captain Sun... that kid..." Zhou Dasheng wasn’t one to keep things to himself. He frowned and started to speak, but Sun Hao cut him off. "Dasheng, don’t jump to conclusions. Wang Jian did warn us..."
Zhou Dasheng fell silent as Sun Hao finished. It was true. Before they entered the mountains, Wang Jian had specifically warned them that the misfire would result in one dead and one alive.
Still, to see Lao Zhou getting mauled by wolves and for there to be no reaction... it was inevitable that their minds would run wild. No matter how experienced they were, they hadn’t been able to discern anything wrong with Lao Zhou from a distance. They were completely baffled as to how Wang Jian had managed it.
Later, after the SWAT team had apprehended Lao Zhou and returned to take statents, several officers looked at Wang Jian strangely. Their gazes were a mixture of curiosity, bewildernt, and, above all, suspicion.
"Did you do it on purpose?" Sun Hao asked in a low voice, standing beside Wang Jian after the statents were finished.
"What?"
As an expert in criminal investigation, Sun Hao prided himself on being able to see through people. He was only asking to test Wang Jian. The sight of Lao Zhou’s condition had left a deep impression, and he felt unsettled without getting to the bottom of it. "Lao Zhou’s leg was bloodied, so it got gnawed on by wild animals."
"How can you bla for that? Cai Qiong and I left together. While we were escaping, I just used my dical knowledge to knock him out. That’s all." Wang Jian chuckled. "Besides, you don’t really think I can control wolves, do you? I’m just a practitioner of Chinese dicine who graduated a few years ago. How could I possibly have a skill like that? Lao Zhou was just unlucky. It has nothing to do with ."
Wang Jian was telling the truth. While he had intentionally incapacitated Lao Zhou, encountering wolves was a complete coincidence. He then shook the herbs in his hand. "If I wanted to use the wolves, I wouldn’t have dragged Cai Qiong along to gather herbs on our way down. This dicine is for a patient today. If it weren’t for this patient, neither Cai Qiong nor I would have gone up the mountain." He then pointed to Cai Qiong, who was walking over. "It’s all clearly captured on her cara."
Sun Hao knew Wang Jian had a point. He’d never in his life t a doctor who would still be thinking of his patients while facing mortal danger. For that alone, Sun Hao held a newfound respect for Wang Jian. If it hadn’t been for Lao Zhou’s grueso state, Sun Hao would never have bothered to ask. It was just his old occupational hazard: always suspecting everything first.
With that thought, Sun Hao felt a pang of guilt for doubting him. He patted Wang Jian’s shoulder and prepared to lead his team down the mountain. Before leaving, he gave Wang Jian his business card. He wasn’t the only one. After learning about Wang Jian’s Acupuncture and dical Skills, even Zhou Dasheng, who had also found the young man unsettling, proactively gave Wang Jian his contact information.
Wang Jian and Cai Qiong followed the group down the mountain. Sun Hao, Zhou Dasheng, and the others consciously gave them space. They weren’t fools; Miss Cai’s attitude toward Wang Jian was obviously different.
Cai Qiong herself hadn’t noticed. After everything she’d just been through, her mind was completely focused on Wang Jian. Listening to the exchange between Wang Jian and Sun Hao, she felt sothing was off. As soone well-versed in psychology and human behavior, she was doubting her own judgnt for the first ti. It was as if, after the events on the mountain, two voices appeared whenever she tried to analyze Wang Jian: one rational, the other emotional. This completely compromised her professional judgnt...
However, looking at the herbs in Wang Jian’s hand, her emotional side won out. Wang Jian is right. He’s a kind person. Only he would still be thinking about herbs while coming down the mountain. Otherwise, they would never have noticed the small patch of herbs on the mountainside.
At the ti, Cai Qiong’s only thought was to get down the mountain as fast as possible. She paid no attention to her surroundings, only the path ahead. If Wang Jian hadn’t stopped her, she would have walked right past them. Could a person like that... really have hard Lao Zhou intentionally...?
Cai Qiong stopped dwelling on it. Those two got what they deserved.
Putting those issues aside, another headache began to form. With all the commotion in the mountains, Xu Qian back ho must have found out by now. The thought of Xu Qian’s attitude toward Wang Jian made Cai Qiong anxious. Then, rembering how she had abandoned Wang Jian to run away herself made her feel even more ashad. This wave of emotion was uncontrollable. As the village at the foot of the mountain drew closer, her nervousness intensified.
With this weighing on her mind, she supported Wang Jian all the way down. Distracted, Cai Qiong didn’t realize how closely she was clinging to him. Her main fear was that he might fall. Yet Wang Jian’s injury was to his left shoulder; it didn’t affect his walking at all.
After walking for a while, Wang Jian felt the pain in his shoulder had subsided. He could probably even remove the pain-relieving silver needle now. With perks like these, who could complain?
This was the first ti Wang Jian truly appreciated Cai Qiong up close. The woman had a phenonal figure, and she loved to exercise.
"What a pity," Wang Jian muttered under his breath, just loud enough for Cai Qiong to hear. That she likes won.
"What’s a pity?" Cai Qiong asked, startled. "Are we still missing so herbs?"
She assud he hadn’t found everything he needed, but when she looked up and t his gaze, her experience told her exactly what he was thinking.
"Doesn’t your shoulder hurt?" Cai Qiong was sowhat speechless. "You n... how can you think about that kind of thing at a ti like this?"
Even as a psychologist, she couldn’t figure it out. Male psychology was sohow both simple and incomprehensible.
Wang Jian smiled slightly. "It was hurting, but it’s not anymore." He glanced aningfully at the arm she was holding.
"Then I’ll just keep holding it." Cai Qiong’s reaction was completely different from what Wang Jian had expected. With a slight pout, she showed no intention of pulling away. On the contrary, she squared her shoulders and hugged his arm even tighter.
It was strange. Cai Qiong had always been averse to n, sothing that was obvious from their very first eting. But just now, she realized she felt no aversion at all. Confused, she didn’t dwell on it. It’s the 21st century, after all. This doesn’t an anything. As for the strange feeling in her heart, she chose to ignore it.
Lost in their own thoughts, Wang Jian mulled over the fact that Cai Qiong liked won, while Cai Qiong tried to figure herself out. And yet, compared to Wang Jian, Xu Qian is clearly more attractive to , she thought, falling into a contemplative silence.
By the ti they returned to the village, Li Dayu and Zhao Chunyang had been waiting at the entrance for so ti. Seeing the blood on Wang Jian and the herbs in his hand, Zhao Chunyang nearly burst into tears on the spot. His reddened eyes gave him away completely.
Sun Hao and his team, their business concluded, said their goodbyes and left without lingering.
Wang Jian declined Sun Hao’s offer to take him to the hospital. After watching them drive off, he led Cai Qiong and the others back to the clinic. There, in front of everyone, he ripped off his shirt, revealing the wound on his left shoulder.
Cai Qiong hadn’t been able to see it clearly through his clothes, but now she sucked in a sharp breath. For so reason, her eyes began to burn. Just looking at the wound made her own left shoulder ache in sympathy.
"It’s fine!" Wang Jian glanced at it calmly. "Just as I thought. It didn’t damage any muscle or bone. It’s just a flesh wound. It’ll heal with so rest."
