"Mhm."

Xu Qian’s voice was exceptionally soft, but in the quiet room, Wang Jian still heard it clearly.

Sister-in-law’s voice is so nice.

As Wang Jian thought this, his hand was already moving to touch her. The instant he did, he suddenly realized they had never been this close before.

Xu Qian also felt it was surreal. She had originally thought Wang Xiang’s presence would be the greatest barrier between them, but unexpectedly, his return had beco the very opportunity that brought them together.

Feeling the warmth of Wang Jian’s palm, Xu Qian grew very nervous. Although she had secretly kissed him before, that had been different. Kissing soone who was asleep and drunk was nothing like this, with him wide awake. An embrace shared when both were conscious was soft and warm—two of the most comforting feelings imaginable.

Wang Jian’s hands were gentle and free of calluses, and their touch completely soothed the anxiety Xu Qian had felt throughout the day.

Unlike Xu Qian, Wang Jian’s thoughts were not as nuanced. He simply felt that a woman’s waist was possibly the most alluring place in the world. However, given the ti and place, he certainly wouldn’t leave his hand just there.

As his hand moved, he sensed Xu Qian’s tension increasing. He wasn’t sure if it was his imagination, but the warmth under his palm seed to be rising.

"Don’t be afraid," Wang Jian whispered.

"Mhm..."

This night was destined to be a long one.

「The next morning」

When the rising sun stread through the window, Wang Jian was the first to open his eyes. His view was filled with Xu Qian’s hair; her entire head was pillowed on his arm. After a whole night like that, his arm was completely numb. If he didn’t pull it out soon, it might be permanently damaged.

No doubt about it. An entire night of blocked blood flow could really ruin an arm.

While Xu Qian was still asleep, he stealthily withdrew his hand and slipped out of the room.

Only after he left did Xu Qian open her eyes, her face flushed red.

He’s terrible! she cursed inwardly. The mory of the previous night made her burn with embarrassnt. That was why she had kept her eyes shut when he pulled his arm free. But upon hearing him rubbing his arm, she desperately had to stifle a giggle.

Wang Jian left the City Hospital without lingering, imdiately hailing a cab for Cai’s Hospital. His eting with Cai Xing was scheduled for ten o’clock this morning, and it was getting close. The travel ti was just right, so he skipped breakfast and rushed over directly from the hospital.

The taxi driver was an interesting older man who started chatting the mont Wang Jian got in. Wang Jian had always thought only the cabbies in Beijing were this talkative; he hadn’t realized it was the sa back ho.

"Young man, you’re a doctor, aren’t you?"

"Yes, how could you tell?"

"Hah, I’ve been driving a cab for a long ti. I’ve seen all sorts of people. A young fella like you? I can spot you a mile away."

"..."

It seed cab drivers these days had a strange kind of misplaced confidence; they couldn’t handle praise but loved to talk. Wang Jian tried to stay quiet, but the man wasn’t about to let him off the hook. "Heading to Cai’s Hospital so early... must be a freelance gig, right? I tell you, you youngsters are too impulsive. You’re so young to be taking side jobs. Aren’t you afraid you’ll get into trouble?"

"Actually, it’s not a side job."

"Don’t be shy, I’m not going to report you. I’ve driven doctors like you a few tis before. Most of them were going to plastic surgery clinics, though. You’re different, going straight to Cai’s Hospital."

"..."

This driver was terrible at conversation, leaving Wang Jian completely at a loss for what to say.

In that mont, he began to regret turning down Cai Xing’s offer to send a driver. Why did he have to be so difficult? Now he was stuck enduring this ordeal. It suddenly occurred to him that owning a car would be a very good thing.

Fortunately, the driver wasn’t a complete idiot and finally clamd up when he saw Wang Jian had no intention of talking. Still, Wang Jian clearly heard him mutter a few nasty words under his breath, souring his mood first thing in the morning.

Before long, Wang Jian realized they were going the wrong way. The driver was taking a detour, perhaps to vent his earlier frustration.

"Sir, this isn’t the right way, is it? Cai’s Hospital is in the south, but you’re heading east."

The driver glanced at him in the rearview mirror, catching the flash of anger in Wang Jian’s eyes. Unhurried and without a hint of sha, he replied, "And how old are you? I’ve been driving in this city for over twenty years. You think you know the roads better than ?"

"I..."

"I know what I’m doing. This way is shorter."

The driver wasn’t using a GPS; he was just driving wherever he pleased. It took all of Wang Jian’s self-control not to curse him out. Seeing on his phone’s map that they were only getting farther away, he finally said, "Stop the car."

"What?"

"I’ll get off here."

"It’s still pretty far. You want to get off here?" The driver hadn’t expected to run into such a tough custor. He probably assud that, being in a hurry, Wang Jian would be forced to put up with it, never imagining his passenger would just ask to leave. "We’ll be there soon. Are you sure you want to get out?"

"Yes."

Arguing with a driver like this would be pointless; he’d probably just try to extort . A trip that should have taken thirty minutes is already over, and he’s just been driving in circles. The best solution is to get out now and grab another cab before I’m stuck with him.

After getting out, Wang Jian hailed another taxi. Ten minutes later, he saw the main building of Cai’s Hospital.

Two n stood at the entrance, flanked by a line of doctors. They were clearly waiting for soone. The hospital was unusually bustling today because of this spectacle.

Chen Yan, a nurse on the morning shift, was startled by the scene as she arrived for work.

"Is so high-ranking official visiting?"

Chen Yan had voiced the question on every staff mber’s mind. A nurse from the night shift, who had deliberately stayed late just to see who was arriving, leaned in with a mysterious smile. "I was on duty last night when the police brought in a patient. I heard it was under orders from Chairman Cai himself."

"Really? To protect so VIP?"

"Nope. I heard it was a suspect in an attempted murder case."

Startled, Chen Yan looked confused. "An attempted murderer? Why bring them here instead of locking them up?"

"Good question. Do you know which departnt they were sent to?"

"The psychiatric ward?"

"Exactly. He’s got a screw loose," the nurse said, tapping her temple. "And since he didn’t actually succeed in killing anyone, he could be transferred here. If he’s officially declared ntally incompetent, he might even be acquitted."

"And that doctor waiting with Chairman Cai? He’s a psychology expert, brought in specially from the provincial branch."

"This must be soone incredibly important. The mayor didn’t get a reception like this when he visited."

"Tell about it..."

"Looks like... they’re here."

No sooner had she spoken than a taxi pulled up to the entrance.

"In that taxi?"

"No way. Don’t be ridiculous."

It wasn’t just the nurses; so idle patients and off-duty dical staff lingering in the lobby also turned to look at the entrance.

The biggest difference between a private and a public hospital was patient volu. Resources in private hospitals were not as strained, largely due to fewer patients. With a greater focus on one-on-one VIP service, patients enjoyed a much more comfortable experience. The gap in the standard of care compared to a public hospital was obvious.

The patients here, by and large, had so degree of wealth or connections, but almost none of them warranted a reception of this scale. Therefore, even they were intensely curious about the new arrival.
