When Chairman Kang ntioned that their teacher had retired, Wang Jian’s brows furrowed slightly. Based on his understanding of his teacher, he would never have retired like this unless he had a serious health issue. He would have insisted on staying at his post even with a minor illness. Wang Jian suspected his teacher must be having health problems. Thinking of this, he hurriedly said, "Then after I take Xiao Yu back to her dorm, I’ll go visit our teacher."
"I see..." Chairman Kang gave a slight nod, glancing at Ren Yu beside him. The relationship between my senior and our little junior might be closer than I imagined. After all, I’ve never seen Ren Yu show such an expression to any man. Especially since Wang Jian had clearly brought her to campus. Coming all this way from their hotown... that kind of relationship could only be between a father and daughter or a couple. They aren’t father and daughter, so they must be a couple. If Wang Jian had been a stranger, it would have been fine. But upon discovering he was his senior, Chairman Kang imdiately felt his own hopes were dashed, and his expression turned sowhat glum.
The three of them parted ways. Wang Jian didn’t dwell on Chairman Kang’s emotions; with just a little thought, he could guess what the young man was thinking.
Instead of heading straight to her dormitory, Wang Jian and Ren Yu wandered around the campus. They saw students bustling about, and the overwhelming sense of youth made Wang Jian feel as though he had returned to his own past. He sighed, reminiscing about his old classmates. When he left Capital City, he hadn’t told those classmates. The only ones who knew he had returned to his hotown were his few close friends.
In fact, not everyone who studied at the dical university stayed in Capital City to work as a doctor after graduation. Many couldn’t remain, especially those who had only studied dicine dostically. Wang Jian had been able to work at the hospital mainly because he had spent a few years studying under his master abroad, giving him an overwhelming advantage in practical dical skills. If not for that, he would have struggled to beco an esteed doctor without publishing a few papers or studying abroad.
The path of dicine was not an easy one. Wang Jian knew plenty of students who had only managed to secure a decent position by the ti they were thirty, and that was in second or third-tier cities. Nowadays, the barrier to entry for becoming a doctor is very high. It’s incredibly difficult for those with only an undergraduate degree to secure a permanent, tenured post. There was a docuntary called *Life Gate* that featured a highly regarded doctor with only an undergraduate degree who was ultimately forced to work at a private hospital.
"What are you thinking about?" Ren Yu asked, unable to help herself after seeing Wang Jian’s expression constantly changing. "It feels like you’ve been lost in thought ever since we entered the campus."
"It’s nothing. Seeing the campus just made think of my old classmates," Wang Jian said with a smile, patting Ren Yu’s hand to reassure her. "Have you ever thought about studying abroad?"
"Huh?" Ren Yu was startled. She didn’t know why Wang Jian had suddenly steered the conversation in this direction and asked curiously, "Why bring this up all of a sudden?"
"Since you’ve chosen to study dicine, and Western dicine at that, studying abroad would be a very good option for you in the future." Wang Jian had studied Chinese dicine, so he couldn’t really help Ren Yu much in this regard. He could ask Cai Xing and the others to find a job for her, but he still had to respect her own wishes.
"Hmm..." Ren Yu pondered for a mont before replying, "I haven’t really thought about that. To be honest, the only reason I ca to Capital City was to find you. Who knew you’d go back to our hotown as soon as I arrived."
Hearing this, Wang Jian felt a bit awkward. Their relationship had indeed changed, or else Ren Yu wouldn’t have been so direct. He chuckled. Since Ren Yu wasn’t very interested in practicing dicine, there was no rush to decide her future. "Don’t worry, you have plenty of ti to figure things out. No matter what you want to do, I’ll support you." He gently patted Ren Yu’s head and smiled. "Your big brother will be your rock."
"Heh!" Ren Yu’s face lit up when she heard this. She just nodded, saying nothing more.
Kyoto dical University’s campus wasn’t very large, so it didn’t take them long to walk to the dormitory. However, they ran into a bit of trouble when trying to enter the girls’ dorm. The dorm matron absolutely refused to believe that Wang Jian was Ren Yu’s family mber.
The two were at a standstill downstairs. Ren Yu had already walked into the dormitory building, but Wang Jian was stopped by a stern-looking woman who was fanning herself.
"Young man, this is the girls’ dormitory. Can’t you read the sign?" the matron asked, pointing to a red sign on the wall. In bold letters, it read: ’GIRLS’ DORMITORY, N PROHIBITED.’
"Ma’am..." Wang Jian said with a wry smile. He was always stopped like this back in his college days; so many years later, he was still being stopped just for escorting soone. "It’s the beginning of the sester. I’m a family mber, just dropping off a student."
"Family mber?" The matron looked Wang Jian up and down, the fan in her hand never ceasing its motion against the oppressive heat. After a mont, she chuckled. "I know all about you students. Trying to take advantage of the move-in period to sneak into the girls’ dorms, are you?"
Hearing this, Ren Yu ca back over. She and Wang Jian exchanged a wry smile. The matron wasn’t entirely wrong; people like that really did exist. But Wang Jian wasn’t one of them. Before he could explain, the woman spoke again, "Don’t think I’m old and clueless. Look, you co to university to study hard, and if you fall in love, I won’t stand in your way. But walking into the girls’ dormitory building? That’s absolutely not allowed."
"You say you’re her family," the matron continued with a laugh. "You should look in a mirror before saying that. You’re so young, you’re obviously a student here, yet you’re trying to pass yourself off as a relative."
"Ah, well..." Ever since taking the human pill, Wang Jian’s condition had steadily improved, making him look younger and younger. He just never imagined it would cause this kind of trouble when taking Ren Yu to her dorm.
Ren Yu also gave a wry smile. "Ma’am, we really aren’t lying. He’s my older brother. We just arrived from our hotown."
Following her lead, Wang Jian took out his ID card and pointed to the birth year. "Ma’am, please look. I’m almost thirty. How could I be a student here? I did go to this university, but I’ve already graduated."
"Is that so?" The matron took the ID card and compared the photo to Wang Jian’s face. Seeing their sincere expressions, she finally believed them and let them pass. As for the other parents who ca for the start of the sester, she hadn’t stopped a single one, since they were all middle-aged n and won.
Watching Wang Jian’s departing figure, the matron muttered to herself, "Do n take that good care of themselves these days? He really doesn’t look like he’s about to turn thirty." Still muttering, she compared Wang Jian to the third and fourth-year male students she had stopped earlier and realized he looked much more refined than those coarse young n. Good heavens... and it was obvious Wang Jian wasn’t even wearing makeup.
While the matron was still marveling to herself, Wang Jian had already followed Ren Yu to her dorm room door.
Along the way, the female students they passed either stared openly or pointed and whispered. They all obviously mistook Wang Jian for a fellow student. A male student being allowed into a girls’ dorm was quite the novelty. It was like Tang Xuanzang entering the Spider Spirit Cave, sending the horde of demons inside into a frenzy. If Ren Yu hadn’t been walking beside him, so of them would have definitely co up to ask for his contact information.
