Alex

"The point is to look innocent and clueless..." I hissed as I narrowed my eyes at her. She was seriously getting on my nerves now. "Not look like an experienced slut." I fought the urge to stare down at her again.

Goddamn it. If I had just checked the outfits then none of this would’ve happened.

That was clearly a mistake on my part and I would make sure it never happens again.

"I know." Theadora’s quick answer pulled back to reality.

"What?"

"I know that I was supposed to dress like a clueless teenager so this investigator I’m going to et won’t suspect ." She said with a small shrug.

My brow quirked up and I could hear Adrian’s quiet laughter behind .

I’m convinced that one day I’m going to eventually lose it and end that man’s life myself.

"The only reason I dressed like this..." She continued bringing my attention back to her as she reached for my shirt. "...was to get on your nerves." She picked what looked like a piece of lint off my shirt and flicked it away.

"And look, it worked." Her smile widened and it was in that very mont that Adrian decided that he couldn’t hold back his laughter anymore.

My fingers reached for my brows as I muttered a few curses, trying to process what she had just said. I wanted to yell at her for acting so stupidly and wasting my ti on purpose but I didn’t have it in anymore.

I just wanted to get the goddamn file from the investigator and carry on with my plan. And I wouldn’t be able to do that if this girl kept ssing around.

"Just...just get back in there and change." I gestured towards the room she ca from as I tried my best to keep it together.

"No."

"No?" My brows furrowed. "What do you an no?"

I could feel the veins in my temples staring to throb.

"I an no" She sidestepped , moving towards the other side of the stairs so she could lean on the railings. "I am not going back to change...not until you take back what you said."

"Excuse ?"

"You said red was not my colour and..."

"What?" Adrian interrupted drawing our attention towards him. "He said that?" His gaze flickered between us as he slowly climbed up the stairs.

"Alex..." he feigned a gasp. "How could you?"

"I know right?" Theodora held a hand to her chest as she slowly nodded, playing along with Adrian. "The betrayal."

"Maybe he was just bluffing. You know how our dear Alex can be at tis."

"Yeah maybe. But now I need him to take it back. Certainly that’s not too much to ask right? A little apology doesn’t hurt anybody."

My gaze ping-ponged between Adrian and Theodora as they both went back and forth like I wasn’t even there and it was a miracle that I hadn’t snapped yet.

"Fine." I muttered, raising a hand to silence whatever the hell was going on here.

I knew how stubborn this girl could be. If I didn’t give in to her stupid requests we were never going to leave this place and I would definitely not want to force her to assist .

Who knows what she could try to pull off just to get back at ?

"What was that?" Theodora leaned in cupping her hand over her ear. "Hold on Adrian I think he said sothing."

I regretted my decision instantly. Why did fate always have to bring people with the most ridiculous personalities my way? What happened to serious and business-minded people?

Instead fate chose to bring people like Adrian...and her.

I looked away from both their gazes and even though I knew that they were going to rub this in my face for the rest of the ti they’d know —because clearly that wasn’t forever...I still went ahead to say it. "I take it back. Red..fits you just fine." I hesitated clearing my throat.

I didn’t lie though. The colour seed to fit her just fine. More than fine even. But she definitely didn’t need to know that.

"Good." Her green eyes crinkled with a smile as I finally brought my gaze to et hers again. I pretended I didn’t see Adrian snickering beside her as she continued, "I would have made you say a lot more but I guess I’ll let you off the hook just for today." She said with a small shrug before moving towards .

I was about telling her that the only ti and place she’d hear what she wanted from again was in her fucking dreams but the sudden tug on my collar took be by surprise, yanking forward and chasing the retort clean out of my head.

Before I could even blink, she was right there—in my space, her face re inches from mine, those big green eyes locked onto mine like they could see right through every wall I’d spent years building.

"Oh, and..." Her voice was low, smooth, but carried the kind of sharpness that could slice skin clean open. "I would really appreciate it if you didn’t call a slut again. Hmm?"

Her fingers released my collar slowly, deliberately, as if daring to say sothing else. But I couldn’t. My jaw stayed locked. My thoughts scattered. And all I could do was stare.

She took a graceful step back, smoothing her dress like she hadn’t just rocked my entire brain, and turned around without another word. Her heels clicked against the stairs as she ascended, hips swaying slightly—mocking with every step she took.

And she didn’t look back.

I stood there, frozen, blinking at the spot she’d just been like I was trying to reboot.

What the hell just happened?

"Daaamn," Adrian whistled behind , reminding that he was still here and that he watched everything. "You good, man?"

I pressed my lips together, eyes fluttering shut as I contemplated which thod I’d use to kill him.

He then clapped a hand on my shoulder, grinning like he’d just watched the best episode of his favorite show. "Wow. I never knew I was going to have this much fun today. She really called you out like the queen she is and walked off. Honestly? I’m impressed. She’s the only woman I’ve ever t who is able to put you in your place." He sneered. "I an you look like you just got bitch-slapped without even being touched."

"Girl Adrian." My temples throbbed as I corrected him again, ignoring his stupid comnts. "She’s not a woman or a lady...she’s a girl."

And that’s what pissed off the most. How could an 18 year old be so...so...

"I don’t think you know the difference between a girl and a woman, man." He whispered from behind interrupting my thoughts.

"Shut up," I muttered, still trying to get the image of those eyes and lips out of my head.

Adrian chuckled. "Whatever you say, Roo. Whatever you say."

I swatted his hand off my shoulder.

"Shut. Up."

"Okay now I think about it I can’t. That was gold. Does she always call you out like that?"

I then shot him a sharp look, my brows furrowed as I scowled at him. "Okay. Okay. I’ll shut up now."

With Adrian quiet now, my mind wandered back to that crazy girl and I loathed myself for being so quiet and not saying anything to her when I could.

I really should’ve said sothing. Anything. Put her in her damn place. Remind her who the hell was in charge here. But instead, I just stood there like a damn statue, staring at her like so stupid...

Argh Fuck. I don’t even know what to call myself now.

I gritted my teeth and ran a hand down my face, letting out a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding.

What the hell was wrong with ?
