Although Michael had asked for every single article about the party to be taken down from the internet, most people in Lake City had already heard about what happened. There were many discussions going on about the relationship between her, Michael, and Yvonne on various social dia platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and TikTok.
Most people believed that Wendy was not qualified to be Michael’s wife. Otherwise, it did not make sense for Michael to have abandoned her that night.
Wendy had long grown numb to this. She continued scrolling through TikTok. She could hear Michael pacing outside her door from ti to ti. She did not know what exactly he was doing either.
The following morning, she opened her door to see a huge bouquet of roses. The roses looked fresh, and there were water droplets clinging to the petals. She frowned and was soon greeted by the sight of Michael’s face.
"Good morning, Wendy," said Michael as he thrust the bouquet in her face, signaling for her to take it. However, Wendy reached out to push Michael out of her way before stepping out of the bedroom.
Wendy’s cold and distant attitude left Michael dumbfounded. He continued standing where he was. After she rejected his invitation for dinner last night, he had read through the entire docunt that Mr. York had prepared for him again. From there, he devised a new plan. He never expected it to be another failure.
However, Michael was prepared. There was still another part to this.
"Are you surprised?" said Michael when he saw Wendy erge from the bathroom for breakfast.
He placed the bouquet on the table and said, "I instructed soone to buy breakfast from the most famous bakery in Lake City."
The expression on Wendy’s face did not change.
Feeling slightly embarrassed, he added, "I wanted to cook breakfast for you, but you know how I am in the kitchen."
Wendy snorted before rolling her eyes at him.
She would not dare to eat anything that he cooked.
Seeing so response from Wendy, Michael breathed a sigh of relief. Even if she did not want to talk to him, at least she was reacting to him now. He could hardly bear how she had been treating him like he did not exist.
"This bakery is aweso, it’s truly the best in Lake City. In the past, Yvonne..." Before he finished speaking, he quickly and absentmindedly raised his hand and slapped himself.
Just as he had expected, Wendy’s face darkened instantly, and she turned around to enter the kitchen.
"I’m sorry, Wendy, I didn’t an to," said Michael.
All he had wanted to say was that Yvonne used to bug him to buy her breakfast from that bakery because of its reputation, but he never did.
Michael had always been generous with Yvonne when it ca to money. However, he rarely invested his ti and effort in her. Since he was always busy with work, he did not usually spend ti with her. Otherwise, she would not have tried so hard to co to MC Enterprise and work as his assistant.
Because of the way that Yvonne used to go around talking about their relationship, Wendy thought that Michael must have spent all his ti with her. On top of that, she knew that Michael despised Wendy greatly and wanted to spite her. Hence, most people, Wendy included, got the impression that Michael was a very loving boyfriend to Yvonne.
Michael decided not to try and explain himself, because he knew that it would only complicate things. He followed after Wendy and said, "Wendy, at least try it. There are croissants, bagels, muffins, and more. See if you like them. If you do, I’ll buy more frequently in the future."
Wendy continued ignoring him. She minded her own business and cooked breakfast for herself. After a simple al, she went straight to the study.
Confronted with yet another failure, Michael sighed and sat down at the dining table to eat breakfast by himself.
After finishing his breakfast and clearing the table, Michael went to work.
What Wendy did not expect was for Mrs. Lucas to show up at her door in the afternoon. In all these years, this was her first ti visiting Wendy’s apartnt. Before this, they always went back to the mansion.
When Wendy first opened the door to see Mrs. Lucas standing there, her feelings were imnsely complicated.
"Wendy, aren’t you going to invite your grandmother in?" asked Mrs. Lucas with a sweet smile on her face as she leaned on her walking-stick.
"Grandmother, please co in," Wendy imdiately invited the elderly woman in. She had already figured out why Mrs. Lucas was here.
After entering the house, Mrs. Lucas looked around her surroundings. When she spoke, she sounded both surprised and apologetic. "Have you been staying here all these years?"
This apartnt would be considered decent to most middle-class people. However, the Lucas family was the wealthiest in all of Lake City. Yet, their daughter-in-law was staying in an apartnt spanning only slightly more than 100 square ters. If this got out, people would certainly mock them. Of course, this was also an injustice to Wendy.
Wendy understood the aning behind Mrs. Lucas’s words. Smiling, she replied, "This apartnt is actually pretty spacious, especially since I used to stay here alone. I think this is for the best, I’d probably feel scared staying in a bigger apartnt."
Mrs. Lucas sighed, not knowing what to say to that.
After helping the elderly woman to the couch, Wendy scratched her head and said awkwardly, "I’m sorry, Grandmother, I don’t have any tea at ho because I don’t usually drink it. Why don’t you wait here for ? I’ll go out to buy so right away." With that, she grabbed her phone and planned on going out.
Mrs. Lucas imdiately waved her hand at Wendy. She said, "There’s no need for that. I’m not here to drink tea."
Wendy remained standing where she was, not knowing what to do.
"Let get so water for you, then," she said as she turned around and poured so into a glass before placing it in front of Mrs. Lucas.
"Co, sit down beside ," said Mrs. Lucas as she patted the empty space beside her.
Wendy nodded and did as she was told.
Holding Wendy’s hand, Mrs. Lucas looked her up and down. Noticing how good Wendy’s complexion looked, she said, "Are you feeling better?"
The elderly woman was referring to what Wendy told her about not wanting to go back to the mansion because she was not feeling well the most recent ti they spoke on the phone. of course, they both knew that this was just an excuse. But since Mrs. Lucas did not know what else she could use to start a conversation, she decided to ask about Wendy’s health.
Wendy nodded and said, "I’m a lot better, Grandmother, please don’t worry about . You should also take good care of yourself."
"I am surrounded by household staff to help back at the mansion. They get the family doctor to co down and examine if I so much as cough once. I couldn’t die even if I wanted to."
"Grandmother, please don’t say that."
"Alright, I won’t," said Mrs. Lucas as she patted Wendy’s back. She sighed, knowing that they had to talk about the main reason why she was here eventually. Looking into Wendy’s eyes, she said, "Wendy, you’re very clever, you should know why I’m here today."
Wendy nodded rather helplessly.
"I have already acknowledged you as my granddaughter-in-law. As long as I’m alive, no other woman can take your place" said Mrs. Lucas in a much sterner voice than usual, as if she was making a promise to Wendy. "Do you understand ?"
This ti, Wendy did not acknowledge those Words as Mrs. Lucas had hoped for. She no longer wished to sustain her marriage with Michael. Mrs. Lucas showing up here today was sothing that she had not expected. But since her relationship with Michael had already reached this stage, Wendy knew that even if she tried to compromise for Mrs. Lucas right now, other problems would arise in the future.
Hence, Wendy decided not to blindly comply with Mrs. Lucas this ti.
Wendy bowed her head slightly. She took a deep breath and mustered all her courage before saying, "Grandmother, I know how fond you are of as your granddaughter-in-law, and how you’ve protected and taken care of all these years. I know that you’ve always hoped that I could get along well with Michael and be with him until the end. However..."
She looked up, and when she saw the expectant gaze in Mrs. Lucas’s eyes, found herself unable to continue. At last, after a long pause, she still decided to get it off her chest. "But Michael and I are just not fated to be together. It’s best for us to go our separate ways."
"Wendy..." Mrs. Lucas sighed deeply. Just when she was about to say sothing, a man’s voice rang out from outside the door.
"I don’t agree!" It was Michael.
He took long strides into the apartnt and stood before the two of them sitting on the couch. Looking down at Wendy, he said, "You refused to get divorced back when I wanted one. You trapped in this marriage for three years. Now, you want to leave. I will never agree to it."
Mrs. Lucas reached out and gave Michael’s leg a pat. Lowering her voice, she said, "Can you adopt a more pleasant attitude?"
Michael thought that his attitude toward Wendy had been fantastic over the last few days. He remained humble and apologetic no matter how she treated him. Besides Wendy, he had never treated anyone so well before. But no matter what he did, she was still hell-bent on getting divorced.
Wendy did not expect Michael to co back ho at this point. But that did not matter-she have already made up her mind to get divorced, and whether Michael agreed was an entirely different matter. She had no say over it. The only concern she had was that it would beco impossible to keep her pregnancy a secret if they continued delaying this.
Her baby bump had already started to show, but she was still able to conceal it with baggier clothes. The atmosphere instantly grew tense. Nobody spoke for a long mont.
Finally, Mrs. Lucas said with a smile, "Whether you two want to get divorced or not, it’s ti for dinner." She glanced at the ti and saw that it was already past 5 P.M. She continued, "At least have dinner together amicably. Getting divorced is not sothing that you can settle imdiately, you can discuss it going forward. As for , I think I’ll go ho now instead of interfering in your affairs." With that, she grabbed her walking stick and stood up.
Wendy imdiately helped to support her. She said, "Grandmother, didn’t you say that you’ve been craving so of my pastries? Don’t go yet, I’ll make so for you right away."
"It’s fine," said Mrs. Lucas in a solemn manner as she gazed at Wendy. "The only thing that I want is for you and Michael to stay together and get along. Wendy, please promise that you will reconsider this matter seriously."
Since Mrs. Lucas had already expressed her intent to leave, Wendy decided not to be too harsh with her words. She did not want this visit to end on a bad note. Nodding, she said, "Grandmother, let send you back."
"It’s okay, I ca here with the housekeeper. The car is still waiting for downstairs."
Wendy already knew that Mrs. Lucas had been escorted here. After all, it was not likely that the Lucas family mbers would allow her to step out of the mansion alone considering her old age. The only reason Wendy offered to send her ho was that she did not wish to spend ti alone with Michael in the apartnt.
She knew that the only reason why Mrs. Lucas had shown up here personally was because Michael had told her everything that had happened between them over the last few days. Mrs. Lucas had no choice but to take things into her own hands for the sake of her incompetent grandson. She had assud that Wendy would at least listen to her advice.
Patting Wendy’s hand, Madam Lucas said, "At least have dinner with Michael, okay?"
Since Mrs. Lucas was so insistent, Wendy could only agree with a nod.
